You've got Packer and Murdoch on the same team now... game over

no that's wrong.

Murdoch will roll off the bed and cozy up to whoever wins.

Cable TV lives and dies on the it's sports platforms, and he is not going to ignore AFL for the sake of it.

why do you think he would?

Yeah thats the key.
Channel 10 and 7 can't match that kind of money against Packer and Muroch, who are two big money men.

How rich is kerry stokes ?

If nine wins it, watch the rugby codes and soccer continue to make headway againts Aussie rules slowly but surley.

The people who like to control the masses do not want the masses to own anything.

so they take them off them by paying a large anount of money for them, then sell the product back to the masses at a profit.

I for one am out it 9 win it. I refuse to pay for something my forfathers invented and which I helped to maintain and develope.

Anybody who wants 9 to win the rights is either a rugby league supporter or a complete idiot.

Stokes spends more time in court than he does doing business. The executives are all over the place on holidays and however long it takes for a company to get its act together it always takes 5x as long when it involves a third party.

Unless they have already made preparations for an $780+ million bid prior to christmas break then it will be difficult for them to get everything done in 14 days.

Disagree,s Tas.Granted Stokes etc may have been somewhat "Blindsided" by the amount however i very much doubt Stokes wouldnt think at the very least Packer would make sure Stokes pays absolute top $ for the rights.
If 9 gets the rights i have a bad feeling packers next target is the federal govt and its policy on sport on FTA.
Ch9 will/maybe have the 3 biggest sporting codes in its corner.Pay per view here we come.

You are spot on here.

Murdoch and Packer have already been lobbying the federal gov to this end.

The feds will do it if they think they can get away with it without losing popularity. The AFL will not object because it will mean more money.

No one is looking out for the Australian people they are merely there to be exploited, along with their culture and football.

This is actually a war but no body realises. They are taking away our very own culture and refining the roughage out of it taking the soul out of it so that it is an over processed product just like white sugar or white bread, and then they are selling it back to us at an inflated rate.

But nobody cares becuase Australians are dumb stupid short sighted, sado masochistic people who love to be abused by parental figures in the media and government.

Wake up footy supporters you are beeing fleeced.

Get off your high-horse. Its entertainment FFS!! You shouldn't get it for free, not considering what everyone expects of it in any case. You'll be asking for movies to be free for everyone too.

Nobody is getting 'fleeced'. There is a cost of providing this entertainment, and its natural that someone should try to make money off it. This whole process is just a normal battle for business, and whoever does the best job wins.

If you dont like the outcome, tell the networks... with your words and with your dollars. Otherwise, stop trying to make it sound like someone is murdering the children

First off your point 2 is wrong (according to Andy D)
9's intended coverage was better than 7/10 opening bid (on coverage).
Point 2 should be read alongside the first sentence.... ie its nonsense to think 7/10s first bid remotely resembles what they intended to bid for their final offer.

...
Either way, it is a win to Packer.
Yeah.

Wrong.

Match the 9 offer and they get it.

You need to start reading more than the Headline.
You're talking about matching the financial portion of the bid. For months I've been trying to point out that there are no doubt a number of intangible aspects of the bid. Surely they count?

Fox needs afl, if every game went free to air, the subscriptions for fox from WA, SA, NSW, and Qld would drop so drastically you may as well let Murdoch take a surface to air missile to the good old optus c1 satellite because to keep it going would be a joke
I think you'll find Fox Sports NRL Super Saturday and NRL Sunday coverage will mean QLD NSW subscriptions won't drop at all.

Why have most of you written off 7/10?

As has been pointed out by almost every business journalist and financial analyst it would be 'financiallty irresponsible' for 7 & 10 to match the bid in terms of their business bottom line and value to shareholders

Channel 10 needs to PAY MORE to GET LESS. Not smart business sense is it? Paying more money for less games, less finals and 2 out of 5 Grand Finals. Channel 10 is the most profitablte TV network in Australia because they run on a shoestring paying less as possible not because they throw money around.

Seven's share price rocketed up after the annoucement of the PBL bid, with happy Seven shareholders profiting at the prospect of them not getting AFL

The AFL rights are way over the odds $$$ wise and if 7 & 10 match it their share price will plummet. If you own 7 & 10 shares and think they will match it, sell this week!

7 & 10 are listed on the ASX as TV networks only and their entire operations and share price is derived by their TV business. PBL on other other hand is a mass conglomrate of various business units of which 9 is just a part of and their share value is fireproofed against paying more than expected for the rights

Seven reported a profit for 2004/05 of $93 million (and now have to find $500 million plus over 5 years for AFL)

PBL reported a profit of $490 million for 04/05 and has $850 million in cash in the bank alone waiting to be spent

It's all about the bottom line

Seven with AFL expenses could drive them back into the situation of the mid-90's where they were virtually bankrupt - they got lucky in 05 with US crap like Lost, Desperate Housewives boosting their revenue but that was just programming luck, no guarantee that future US programs will be as successful

I really don't care which station wins, as long as I am able to watch the games on FTA. I am more interested in watching the games then seeing who wins or loses the rights to it.

If Seven is going to bring back the Grand Final marathon I hope they win, if not, I really don't care which network has it. We haven't got Seven or Ten just the combined network called Southern Cross so it will not change here.

Us with a set top box have Network Ten as TDT (Tasmanian Digital Television)

Seven was lucky this year with US Imports. Although some cutting across the board (already started with TT being merged into a Sydney based program, and rumours of Australian drama being cut) would be one of many ways to recoup the costs of the 2007-2011 AFL rights

The good news for the AFL is that because the Networks have paid so much for the rights they now have to promote the game even more to help recoup the large amount of money they will have to outlay to pay the AFL its fee and bring the matches to air with the latest technology.
Its a win win situation for the AFL thanks to the goannas vindicitvness.
