Why is Hodge rated so highly?

This thread is hilarious...

Hodge is an attacking defender. He goes where he wants to go. Its up to the opposition to man him up not the other way round.

If you're stupid enough to put Stokes and Rooke on him then you pay the price.

Which quality Cats forward do you think Hodge would go on if he was any good???

You are a fool... honestly your logic and argument have no base or substance and its giving me a headache trying to get my head around it. Your biased, blinded and stupid. Hodge is/on par the best player in the competion. Where do i start with you, Hodge kicks goals Harley does not, goals hurt the opposition and harley does not kick them reflected by the fact he has kicked 11 in his career while hodge has kicked 20 this year. Hodge averages 24 touches Harley averages 15 touches, Hodge averages the same amount of marks so being that he is a backman im guessing a fair percent are from the opposition he also chooses to punch the ball rather than mark it. He averages 4 tackles a game Harley averages less than one which outlines his lack of pressure abplied in the forward line. Hodge averages a goal a game and harley has only kicked one this year. Hodge has had 14/20 games over 20 plus possesions alot of them being 30+ while Harley has had 4/26 with 20+ and not one more than 30. You also mentioned that ABlett is second behind Corey in disposals- WRONG AGAIN, he is actually 8th on that list. So before you say something stupid like that again just register that thing upstairs see if its still working
Read it again buddy. I said he averaged the second most disposals per game.

So voting is now....

Hodge is better = 5 pages worth of posts except for 2 people.

Harley is better = 2 people

Oh, and click here for the Geelong Downfall!!!
Yeah I saw that...:thumbsu::D

firstly, big nasty, you are a sad sad sad individual. you clearly have very little understanding about the game of football. it seems to me that you judge a players performance by the stats sheet you read in the paper the day after. sorry, the stats sheet that you get someone to read for you.

secondly, hodge doesn't just play CHB on one player. he starts there and then defends the whole 50m line with a 15m radius forward and back. basically, he reads the play and then goes where the kick is going. how else can he be spoiling marking contests at CHB, left pocket and right pocket? also, I have never seen one person take so many chests marks running back with the flight of the ball as hodge has. he anticipates the play, moves early and commits his whole body to the contest. that is what makes him so valuable in the position. (btw, it was a 40m handball, not 60m;))

finally, I think it is worth noting part of the reason why so many people doubt hodge's worth/achievements. if you look at the stats sheet he doesn't appear to stand out in any particular area. the reason for this is that he has never just played in one particular role for very long. this is because the coach tends to put him wherever the teams weakness happens to be at the time (or the oppositions strength). he has spent time in the midfield and done very well there. he has spent time in the forward line and kicked goals quite well. now he has spent a few games playing back and he has dominated there, too. however, if you look at his figures you won't see the large numbers of posession that a regular midfielder would have. nor would you see many goals per game next to his name, and you also won't see a huge number of rebounds.

it's pretty simple, though. if you look at what he does he does it extremely well, whatever it is he may have been asked to do for the team...
Yeah, as i said...he plays on the crap defenders.

Pure and simple if you havent worked it out you cats fan, hodge oozes with class ,no class about harley, just a good honest defender that is all he is and all he will ever be.Hodge and harley miles apart and why he is rated so highly watch hawthorns final series and you will realise great players perform when it counts.

Ahh finally someone sees my logic. :thumbsu:

The same umpires who denied Gary Ablett the Brownlow. Not so long ago they needed a white cane and a labrador. Flimsy.

Grand Final

Tom Harley 11 possessions , 3 contested.

Luke Hodge, 26 possessions, 11 contested.

Harley takes a "lesser" forward and peels off them because he has Scarlett, Taylor and Milburn doing the heavy lifting, Hodge starts loose and forwards try to make him man up.

There is a difference between getting your own ball in the middle and loose man in defence.

11 contested possies in a GF. Are you serious?

pffft you got lucky

I'll lend you my DVD of the game. You kept us in it until half time. Then we took it away from you.

Luke Hodge is a tremendous player - and deserves to be rated highly.

I don't think he is at the pointy end like Buddy and Ablett - but he'd be on the next tier.

I think he's the third best hawk behind mitchell and buddy.

I saw Sheahan's list and saw where Hodge is - and thought that overrated him a little. i would have pavlich and riewoldt ahead of him for starters.

Hodge proved a lot of people wrong, including myself, in the finals - and ultimately finals is where you need to prove yourself - but there are still a few players who have him covered

It amazes me how so many people criticise Tom Harley for playing on some of the crappest forwards each week so he can help out the other defenders, when Luke Hodge does the exact same thing, yet Luke Hodge is apparently one of the best players in the comp because of this.

There is alot of debate between Hawks & Blue supporters as who is better out of Hodge & Judd. Which is rediculous considering Judd has to win the hardball out of the middle and set up the play, while Hodge just needs to run off his opponent and spoil the ball.

So if Hodge is in the top 5 players in the competition, then I guess Harley is aswell - considering he plays that role just as effectively as Hodge.

Good Luck with that...

If you can't find the answer sifting through all the previous pages, why don't you ask all the AFL coaches? I'm sure they will inform you as to why Hodge is rated as an elite of the competition. Forward, middle or defence. Hodge can dominate anywhere.

hodge doesnt play on players he plays on teams he take care of a whole forward line lol

harley gets concused in a GF and comes back on costs geelong a goal then yells out come on were still in this, and geelong players reject him cause hes bald like g abblett and they greese eath others heads with g abbletts tears before games

then mark thompson comes in the rooms and says hey g abllett and i have some of those tears to wash down this sandwich i was eating during the last quater cause i was so confident we had lost

so which first year player is mooney gonna suka puch in 2009

mark thompson was so angry with stokes after the game he was going to cut his legs off but then realised he was already a midget and they couldnt have half a dumbshit running around full forward trying to test the toughest player in the league ribs he might just get to his shins this time

mike sheanan quote "mmm that milk is tasty geelong cow and ill suck at your teat more maybey in 2009 i will stop writing about all of the afl and just write about how good geelong is oh wait i did that all 2008 hahahah my bad"

Let's put it this way so its easy to understand..
They have differing roles, Harley is a backman and Hodge is a forward.
Hodge is a defensive forward that plays in the backline. We're hoping for the opposition to man up on him like any other forward by putting a defender on him, up their forward line.
Its a ploy to reduce the pressure on the other forwards that play in our forward line but hasn't work because the other teams don't understand our structure yet (Get with the program guys). Sending Campbell Brown up forward was suppose to be a hint but it still didn't get through. It ended up being touted as a great move by Clarko when all we wanted to do was remind teams to man up a forward.

so geelong has that incompetant a coaching staff and match committee that a bigfooty troll would have won them the grand final....

The hope was almost unanimous amongst Geelong supporters that Rooke would go straight to Hodge and stay there. 50,000 Geelong supporters facepalmed when Stokes stood next to him at the start of the game.

hilarious stuff this.

Look we all know Hodgey is just an average footballer nothing more.

No need to compare him to the greats of the game, he just does his job with little fuss, there's nothing special about him at all...

Move along now - nothing to see.
