Yes depends on how the defence settles with the additions and whether our forwards can improve. A poor run with injuries is obviously a season killer too and we’ve gone pretty well in that regard so hopefully that continues. Can we just fast forward to February partly as I can’t wait and partly because winter is coming…

We can with two conditions.

Injuries.
Watson and Dear suffer second year blues. (only their second year and already our most important forwards!)

First and foremost the talent is there to win the whole thing but like a couple have already mentioned we’ll need things like a good start and a good run with injuries. I’m confident mainly because I believe those close wins + losses we had this season with the addition of Barrass + Battle will end up becoming thumpings which allow us to rotate rest players throughout the season.

Top 4 should be the goal and take it from there.

The list structure we have in place ……. we are stacked down back, up forward (I reckon we have the best small forward group in the comp and it’s so unpredictable/dynamic), midfield, wings so all bases are covered and our 27/28th best player is very capable at AFL level so our depth is great. We have the right formula to get through a gruelling long H&A season then through to September.

So looking forward to the next few years ahead Hawkers!

I expect the natural progression from the team as a whole.
How much that is, hard to tell. A few things to consider, our draw is much more difficult, and teams will start to put time and effort into us and our game plan. I expect guys will Day to get tagged and player like Dear and Watson who may have gotten away a bit easier last season wont find it as easy. Also I think a lot depends on other teams and how they progress or fall off the cliff .. looking at you Carlton

- Natural improvement from watson, dear , weddle , mckenzie, d'ambrosio, McDonald.

- A fit sicily and day who are our 2 best players.

- Big inclusions in battle and barrass.

- Very solid depth in ward, morrison, maginness, serong, Mitchell, McCabe, Ryan , ramsden

We should be pretty optimistic. Also, While our injury list wasn't long last season , we had injuries to key players for most of the season and managed. So I dont buy that as a reason why we could potentially fall down the ladder .

I've changed all the 'can's to 'will's.

So there!

The auxiliary verb “will” is used primarily in the future tense.

On the other hand “can" is used in the sense of 'ability' to achieve an outcome, but doesn't indicate specific expectations of the future tense as “will” does.

Grammar. The difference between knowing your shit, and knowing you're shit

Floor: Finals.
Pass Mark: Prelim.
Ceiling: Flag - with no ceiling on future flags!

Also the difference between "Helping your Uncle Jack off a horse" and "Helping your uncle jack off a horse"!

Development isn't linear but if most of our players 23 and under improve by 5-10% I think we can take the next step.

Our backline is a fearsome unit after the trade period - our oldest and most experienced group. The biggest strength.

Improvement out of Newc, Day, Mackenzie, Mass etc. could see our midfield take the next step. It's already very good but was a bit thin on depth this year.

Forwardline is the big question mark. We have so many quality young players which can be prone to form fluctuations. If the likes of Watto, Dear, CMac, Ginni etc. improve it becomes formidable.

Very optimistic about what we can achieve.

The one unknown for me is how our new backline structures up and then settled in. Many were buoyant last year on our forward line due to some of the offseason recruitment. I had thought it would take them a good amount of time to settle. It took longer than some thought, but less than I thought.

For 2025, I’m hoping our back 6 settle quickly, as the first 5-6 rounds are super tough and we’ll need to hit the start of the season with all guns blazing. If we get though the first 6 at 4-2 or even 3-3 the sky is the limit.

Thinking the first 4 games super important, Sydney will be tough to beat first game but the other 3 should be ours, Scum, Blues and Gold Coast in Tassie. 3 from 4 and a bye to reset then charge into the season proper and I see us finishing top 4.
Then a whole new season starts again. The opportunity is ours for the taking, a 100 years celebrational flag is within our hands and is very doable.
