Prediction Will we make finals in 2023? AFL responds with "...not on my watch"

The club should always aim for finals as a minimum.

From there anything could happen.

The next five weeks will give us a better idea of where we sit.

Yep this. It seems like we've improved but when you look at the teams we've played, only 1 of them is likely to play finals (Richmond) and we lost to them.

Think we might be getting ahead of ourselves.

I think in reality we have been steadily improving over the last two years, but not yet to the point of joining the 8.

I dont think so. i think we can reach 10 wins but look at our run coming up. i think going into the 2nd half of the year we will be 5-7. will be tough to find 13 wins this year.

I'd love to see it, however with the kids we have, we are likely to hit a wall after the halfway mark and just miss. I guess a lot of it depends on the magic that Burgess has weaved into the fabric of the lads.

Too early to say we have improved significantly versus last year given we have started prior years reasonably well and so far we haven't beaten any good teams.

So I'll stick with us not making finals with an estimated date of 2025

Biggest difference is that previously we were hoping the likes of Jones, McHenry and even Jimmy Rowe (lol), could step up and make us a good side.

Now there’s some actual class coming through, playing well and influencing results. Rankine, Rachelle, RT, Pedlar, Max.

There’s still a bit to not like though, and it’s a long season. So I say we won’t make finals for now.

We'll know a lot more after tonight. I'm pretty sceptical about the quality of the four teams we've faced, and we're only 2-2. There's a possibility of some recency bias in terms of thinking we're a finals show.

Yes, injuries could derail things, particualry to a player like Dawson. I agree that we now have the firepower, or as some would say 'the cattle'. I think Burgess has the nous to manage the young kids so that they do not burn out and that we get the best from them. It is not only on the field that we are kicking goals!

All winnable games, however I think we'll drop 2 or 3 of those games along the way.

I think we'll end up with 10-11 wins.

I think what we are seeing now is a really positive trend that is being built off the back of younger players. Will we play finals this year? I'd say we're a chance. But if we win say 12 games and finish 9th, but continue to see the signs we're seeing, it's onwards an upwards. The issues we've had in previous eras is that it was the old guard dragging us to the 8, rather than young guys pushing us there.

We have also only played one away game out of five.

I'm more than surprised with the trajectory and have some egg on my face.

On the balance of probabilities, I'll still have to say no, because of our side being so young. I fear they'll run out of gas. If we play like that (Gather Round) every week, we'll make it in a canter and win a final. But that's not a realistic expectation. The signs are there, very obvious signs now, that we are building a finals-quality team. I think a premiership is on the cards within five years.

Can't see 10 teams being worse than us.

Really. I don’t reckon there are that many good teams. Melbourne and Collingwood obviously. Probably Sydney Brisbane - then I reckon us, Port, Saints Dogs Blues Bombers and Geelong

We could be right in the mix with them.

However our win loss is similar to the last couple of years. We need to win next week and set up a huge clash with Collingwood - win those two and we are well on the way

So if Port Carlton Freo aren’t any good and West Coast, North, Hawks, Gold Coast aren’t any good we are only competing with GWS, Saints, Richmond, Essendon, Dogs and Cats for one of the bottom 2-3 spots

We did lose to two of those so we have some work to do. Need to win the next two games and will be in a good position to play finals
