YVMDFNL Netball Wrap - 14 August

Division One

In a top-of-the-table clash, the reigning premiers in Mount Evelyn continued their undefeated 2010 season, defeating Warburton Millgrove 55 – 22. With their finals hopes diminishing, the Warby girls will need to prepare themselves for their next clash again Monbulk – whilst the Mount Evelyn girls should continue on their merry way, with their final clash of the season against Olinda Ferny Creek.

Although it was a low scoring match, it was no doubt the most exciting for this past weekend: Healesville and Monbulk drew in what would possibly be their most important match of the season, with both teams’ finals scores being 20 all. From the very beginning of the match, the two teams couldn’t be separated, with the final scores reflecting how close these two teams are to one another in skill.

The Woori Yallock girls were missing many players and unfortunately suffered a heavy loss at the hands of Upwey Tecoma, who defeated the home side 100 -6 in a very dominant and one-sided performance. From the get-go everything was going right for the visiting team, and this win will only boost their confidence as they face Wandin next week.

Continuing to play great netball, Wandin travelled to Olinda Ferny Creek at the weekend, and the visiting team put in yet another good performance to cement their spot in the top 5. Winning the match 76 – 14, the Wandin girls were simply too strong for their opponents, who in turn couldn’t seek any opportunity to try and get the better of them.

Division Two

Playing Yarra Junction at home at the weekend, the Seville girls finished the 2010 season on a high: defeating the home side 49 – 24. Playing Yea in the first round of finals, Seville will be entering with a confidence boost; the Yarra Junction girls will need to play much better than they did against Seville if they wish to defeat Emerald.

Thornton Eildon played Powelltown at home on the weekend in what was to be a one-sided affair. Powelltown showed just why they are holding top spot with a dominating display of netball for all 4 quarters. The final score read 72-17. The Powelly girls will now have the week off and go into the semi finals with confidence.

Improving after each week and issuing a challenge to all the top 5 sides, Emerald registered another win for the season, this time over the much-improved Belgrave. Defeating the home side 77 – 18, nothing could go wrong for the girls who have shown to be this season’s most-improved and imposing side.

Yea finished the season with a great win over Kinglake to cement 3rd spot coming into finals. The girls from Yea moved the ball down the court quickly and freely not giving the girls from Kinglake much of a chance, the final score being 64-25. Yea will go on to play Seville In this weekend’s qualifying final in what should be an exciting match.

Winning the previous week against Kinglake, the Alexandra girls enjoyed another win, this time defeating Yarra Glen 33 – 23 in a close game. With both teams not making a finals appearance this year, the Alexandra girls did well to finish the season with the 4 points and bragging rights.

YVMDFNL Football Wrap - 14 August

Division One

Gembrook 19.20.134 defeated Silvan 7.8.50. Gembrook has secured 2nd spot on the ladder after their 84 point win over Silvan. Silvan was competitive early but they were no match for Gembrook as they jumped to a 5 goal lead at the half. After half time, it was Gembrook that started to put their foot to the floor with a 12 goal to 4 2nd half to blow the margin right out. Gembrook’s Andrew Shipp was outstanding booting 8 goals to take his season’s tally to 62 while Silvan’s Justin Cuzzupi did his best booting 4 of his teams 7 goals. Gembrook Cockatoo’s best: Ricky Clark, Andrew Shipp (8 goals) and Craig Clarke. Silvan’s best: David Bissels, Justin Cuzzupi (4 goals) and Daniel Scott.

Healesville 15.8.98 defeated Monbulk 8.16.64. Despite Monbulk having 1 more scoring shot, Healesville ended up winning quite comfortably thanks to a great final quarter where they produced 8 goals to 3. This was a scrappy game for the first 3 quarters with Monbulk being dreadfully inaccurate and at 3 quarter time they had a scoreline of 5.14 as opposed to Healesville’s more accurate 7.4 which had them leading by 2 points at the last change. Healesville’s last quarter was brilliant and if they could have produced that form on a more regular basis then their season just may have seen them in the finals. Healesville’s best: Luke Barclay, Mark Gibb and Daniel Plozza. Monbulk’s best: Luke McCormick, Billie Hicken and Shannon Koole.

Mount Evelyn 19.22.136 defeated Warburton Millgrove 17.12.114. Warby just can’t find a way to win. They led the more fancied Mount Evelyn at half time 69 to 54 but couldn’t sustain that form in the 3rd quarter as Mount Evelyn produced a finals style quarter booting 8 goals to 3 to turn a 15 point deficit into a 21 point lead. The last term was even with both teams scoring 4 goals which see Mount Evelyn 4th on the ladder still with a possibility to snare a double chance. Warby’s Scott Muir needs 10 goals in the last game of the season against Monbulk to bring up his 100th after he added a further 5 goals to his tally. Mount Evelyn’s best: Benjamin Farrugia, Paul Tempest and Michael Smith. Warburton Millgrove’s best: Terry Walker, Liam Barnard and Grant Newing.

Olinda Ferny Creek 21.17.143 defeated Wandin 11.9.75. With 37 goals kicked for the game and only 5 of them kicked at the one end the windy conditions certainly made it difficult to score against the breeze. Olinda had the aid of the breeze in the 1st quarter and used it to great effect opening the game with a brilliant 10 goal quarter while Wandin only managed the 1 to pretty much ice the game there and then. Wandin was quite good with the breeze in the 2nd term booting 5 goals to 1 to bridge the gap to 6 goals at the half. Olinda kicked right away in the 3rd with a 7 goal to 1 point quarter to push the margin beyond 13 goals. Wandin did battle it out in the last outscoring Olinda 5 goals to 1 but it was always going to be Olinda’s day. Olinda Ferny Creek’s best: Andrew Greenhall, Scott Tregoning and Tom Millwood. Wandin’s best: Daniel King, Tom Goodwin and Mathew Peterson.

Woori Yallock 16.16.112 defeated Upwey Tecoma 16.13.109. Possibly The Grand Final Preview, and if so then we will be in for a ripper. Woori looked to be in control for the majority of the day after a 7 goal to 2 opening term and they maintained the lead without being able to shake Upwey off. Upwey clawed their way to within 21 points at 3 quarter time but it did look as though Woori always had the upper hand. The last quarter was a beauty with Upwey giving it everything, they played a great last quarter booting 6 goals to 2 and almost pinched what would have been a great win, however Woori was good enough to just hold on. Woori Yallock’s best: Jesse Ridd, Matthew Stolarczyk and Mitchell Bonuda. Upwey Tecoma’s best: Christopher Hayes (5 goals), Kyle Grenda and Wade Porter.

Division Two

Yarra Glen 12.18.90 defeated Alexandra 7.10.52. Yarra Glen finish the season 4 games clear on top after a hard fought but convincing 38 point win over Alexandra. Yarra Glen might not have played at their best but they always looked good enough to stave off any challenge that Alexandra threw their way. Yarra Glen held a 20 point lead at the half which did keep Alexandra in the game but it was a 4 goal to 1 behind 3rd quarter by Yarra Glen that saw them lead by an unassailable 49 points at the last change. Alex did hold Yarra Glen goalless in the last quarter but they didn’t hit the scoreboard enough to create any real challenge. Yarra Glen’s Ryan Kueffer continued his great form in front of goal booting 6 of his teams 12 goals to take his tally to 86 and a chance to bring up his 100th in the finals. Yarra Glen now get a weeks rest and will play the winner of this weeks Seville / Yarra Junction game for a berth in the Grand Final. Yarra Glen’s best: Peter Moate, Ryan Kueffer (6 goals) and Leigh Hoffman. Alexandra’s best: Damien Toomey, Stephen Steiner and Corey Jack.

Kinglake 16.10.106 defeated Yea 10.9.69. Yea needed to win or just lose narrowly to hold on to 5th spot and for most of the day it looked as though Yea was bound for finals until Kinglake found some great form in the last quarter that has been eluding them of late. Yea led at every change except the one that mattered. Only 4 goals were kicked at one end of the ground with the wind having a big effect on the game. Yea didn’t score a major against the wind in the 2nd or last quarters while Kinglake did mange 4 which ended up being crucial in the end. Yea held a 13 point lead at 3 quarter time but their defence was overpowered in the last as Kinglake booted 8 goals to 1 behind which unfortunately for Yea sees them miss the finals by just .49 %. Kinglake’s best: Luke Nott, Mathew Thomas and Brent Gallichio. Yea’s best: James Clavarino, Thomas Bear and Michael Cook.

Belgrave 17.18.120 defeated Emerald 10.13.73. This game was the battle for the wooden spoon and it was Emerald that unfortunately ends the season with the dreaded prize. Incredibly Belgrave finish the season with 5 wins and only 2 games out of the five and with a superior percentage than the 5th placed Thornton/Eildon, with a little more polish Belgrave will be right up there in 2011. Belgrave started the day in great style booting 8 goals to 1 to set up their win. Emerald did try to get back into the game but Belgrave had all the answers to end the season with a pretty good 47 point win and something to build on for next season. Belgrave’s best: Tom McNamara, Kyle Chandler and Joel O’Donohue.

Thornton Eildon 19.13.127 defeated Powelltown 11.14.80. Either one of these teams had to win handsomely or hope that Yea lost to cement 5th spot and, fortunately for Thornton, that’s exactly what happened. Thornton live to fight another day after an awesome and season defining last quarter. For 3 quarters, this was a seesawing affair with no side able to grab a substantial lead. At 3 quarter time it was Thornton that held a slender 8 point lead. Thornton produced a fantastic 7 goal last quarter to Powelltown’s 1 and will go into next week’s final with confidence against a Kinglake side whose form has appeared to have recovered. Thornton Eildon’s best: Shannon Galea, Rhys Chapman and Luke Sharp. Powelltown’s best: Rocky Collins, Barry McDonald and Dean Roy.

Yarra Junction 13.14.92 defeated Seville 7.9.51. Yarra Junction may just be a real threat come finals as they made 2nd placed Seville look somewhat second rate. Junction’s defence was superb in the first half holding Seville to just 1 goal while they booted 7 to take a 39 point lead into half time. Seville did hit the scoreboard in the 3rd booting 4 goals but Yarra Junction matched them and in fact still outscored Seville by 2 behinds. The last quarter saw Junction outscore Seville 3 goals to 2 to win quite comfortably at the final siren. These 2 teams will meet again next week in the first week of finals and it will be interesting to see if Seville can turn their form around in one week or will Junction continue to surprise. Yarra Junction’s best: Brad Charman, Daniel Edwards and Travis Selby. Seville’s best: Kyle Mountjoy, Travis Murphy and Thomas Eddy

Call it a draw and get the cards out.:thumbsu:

Who do we think are the biggest challengers to Yarra Glen in Div 2, or do they have it in the bag?

Thornton are making up the numbers.

Kinglake have been a bit up and down latley i dont think they will get past the second week.

Wouldnt have thought junction would be a chance a few weeks ago but they have a few good wins lately. Shut down wheeler and gates and they will struggle. Easier said than done though.

Seville lost last week but they have 5 to come back in this week who would all rank in their top 10 players, including dean troyan who is probably their most valuable. They have managed to finish second despite being plagued with injuries all year. With a full side they are right up there with yarra glen.

The second division fixture was partly based on geographic factors this year - it seemed to work pretty well. Here is a comparison of the average distance travelled to away matches in 2010 and 2009:

Alexandra: 80.2 km in 2010; 94.3 km in 2009
Belgrave: 49.8 km in 2010; 48.2 km in 2009
Emerald: 47.3 km in 2010; 47.9 km in 2009
Kinglake: 61.4 km in 2010; 57.7 km in 2009
Powelltown: 65.1 km in 2010; 58.3 km in 2009
Seville: 47.3 km in 2010; 38.0 km in 2009
Thornton-Eildon: 68.6 km in 2010; 89.6 km in 2009
Yarra Glen: 47.7 km in 2010; 41.3 km in 2009
Yarra Junction: 50.0 km in 2010; 43.1 km in 2009
Yea: 65.5 km in 2010; 75.7 km in 2009

Gembrook-Cockatoo: 29.7 km in 2010; 39.1 km in 2009
Healesville: 31.9 km in 2010; 35.1 km in 2009
Monbulk: 18.8 km in 2010; 29.9 km in 2009
Mount Evelyn: 17.7 km in 2010; 26.7 km in 2009
Olinda-Ferny Creek: 20.8 km in 2010; 44.5 km in 2009
Silvan: 17.4 km in 2010; 27.5 km in 2009
Upwey-Tecoma: 26.3 km in 2010; 37.9 km in 2009
Wandin: 17.7 km in 2010; 26.0 km in 2009
Warburton-Millgrove: 33.9 km in 2010; 38.1 km in 2009
Woori Yallock: 19.4 km in 2010; 26.1 km in 2009

Of course, it is affected by Alexandra being in second division again this year. As a matter of interest, South Belgrave (who recently transferred to the EFL) travelled an average of 25.0 km in 2010. Silvan, who will be departing soon, will average an estimated 25.7 km per away game in 2011.

The longest distances to away fixtures were recorded by Alexandra in 1981. As the lone northern club in first division at the time, they were obliged to travel an average of 95.5 km. In contrast, Silvan in 2006 averaged only 15.2 km to their away matches.

Thanks for that, how is big Vinnie going at Junction & could he be the X-factor come finals.

Looks like 2nd divvy clubs travelled on average 58.29km in 2010, and South Belgrave only travelled 25km in efl this year, and Silvan will only have to travel 25.7km next year instead of the 58.29km in 2nd divvy, makes it pretty clear as to why these clubs have made (or trying to make)the move to the EFL, i guess players and supporters don't want to travel huge distance's anymore, hard to blame them i spose, love ya work Derby, very insightful:thumbsu:

Re the Silvan situation, I'm guessing Derby's figures are taken as distance from ground to ground. The case put forward by Silvan was that the majority of their players were in EFL territory anyway and distance travelled would probably be even lower for them (i.e. home to ground vs ground to ground).

P.S. Derby - can I book you for a trivia night???

If Silvan had remained in 1st Division then there travel would have been less than playing EFL. Its weird Silvan applied to go to the EFL before this seasons results and relegation was a monty if travel was one of the factors in moving.

All i will say forever more is.... Bye bye Yarra Valley goodbye!!

After this weekend I will check the Final Five competition entries to work out the two winners.
This will involve the use of a spreadsheet, advanced calculus, possible dabbling in the occult and a very large pin.
Winners will be notified with details of how to claim the prizes.
E&OE applies! No correspondence will be entered into. If it is, I'll ignore it anyway.
Good luck to your team on the weekend - except for you, Humpers!

I don't think travel would have anything to do with it.
Surely any club would jump at the chance to swap YVMDFL for EFL?

I take it youve never watched any 3rd or 4th Division EFL?

You are correct.
Always been Yarra Valley.

But, what would be the greater acheivment, building your club up to be competive in YVMDFL 1st or 2nd divy or working your way through EFL and being competative in 1st or 2nd divy?

Not saying that all clubs should jump on the EFL band wagon but can understand why a club would be looking at the option.

Does anyone know if the Match of the Day games are preset or are they chosen? I see this Sat is Monbulk & Warby which I am sure will be a really close game, however we have a top of the table clash between Woori & Gembrook. Surely that game will be Match of the Day

Your kidding mate, top 5 sides in 1st div YVMDFL would fit easily in 2nd div EFL, and the top 2 YVMDFL would be competative with the bottom sides in 1st div EFL, so there is no reason to move, then you have to sustain the costs to compete at that level has any club got a couple of $100k to do this, or lets say Upwey, Gembrook, Woori go and play 3rd or 4th div EFL and play in a lesser comp why

Foos love for the canteen food at Monbulk gave that game the nod.

If the standard is as good as you claim why do Wandin keep losing all their juniors to EFL clubs??
