YVMDFL Football Wrap May 9
YVMDFL action from last weekend was highlighted by big winning margins in 1st division with the closest game being decided by 45 points and the largest by a massive 174 points.
Mt. Evelyn got back on the winners list with an impressive performance away from home over Gembrook Cockatoo 20.13.133 to 13.10.88. A 7 goal to 3 opening quarter from Mt. Evelyn set up the win as they slowly increased their lead as the game went on. The Brookers did fight hard in the last quarter but it was all too late as Mt. Evelyn ran away with a comfortable win. For the winners Benjamin Farrugia (5 goals) was clearly his sides best closely followed by Joshua Grimwood & Chris Haworth. Christopher Murphy was fantastic kicking 7 goals. For Gembrook Steven Gough (3 goals) was his sides best with good support from Ricky Clark (3 goals) & Shannon Richardson.
Alexandra came down the mountain to take on Healesville and at quarter time probably wished they had stayed at home. Healesville were brilliant in the first term booting 8 goals to 2 behinds. The rest of the game was reasonably even with Healesville kicking 8 goals to Alexandra's 5 but it was always going to be The Bloods 4th win from 4 starts 16.8.104 to 5.13.43. Healesville's Jye Conrau was brilliant kicking half of his side goals with 8, Peter Monk, Michael Anson & Clint Barclay were exceptional. For Alexandra Daniel Steel, Jack Corey & Adam Oakley were good all day.
Monbulk at home easily accounted for the winless Wandin with a huge 124 point win. 30.16.196 to 11.6.72. Wandin did show a little bit early and went to the half time break only 6 goals down. Monbulk came out in the 2nd half and tore the game apart booting 18 goals to 5 which included a 10 goal 3rd quarter. Monbulk's Michael Hughson was best afield as he helped himself to 5 goals, Timothy Wragg was also great booting 8 and Adam Gee played a superb game. For Wandin Paul Grayling, Adam Bonsak and Matt Bourchier fought out the game to the end.
Upwey Tecoma showed no mercy as they hosted Warburton Millgrove and handed them a 174 point drubbing 34.29.233 to 9.5.59. Upwey were amazing with an 11 goal 2nd quarter being the highlight of the game, if not for some inaccurate kicking from Upwey this game could have been even more embarrassing than it was for the Burras. Upwey had plenty of good players to pick from but Simon Mitchell's game stood out booting 7 goals, Daniel Sheers, Tom Hedge and Joshua Kamoen (5 goals) were all exceptional. For Warby Lachlan Collard, David Swankie & Terry Walker battled hard in what was a fruitless day for The Burras.
Have Silvan gone from The Hunters to The Hunted? The Cats travelled to Woori Yallock and lost their 2nd game in a row to an impressive Woori unit. 18.18.126 to 10.11.71 Silvan started well going to the first change with a 17 point lead and looking the goods. After that it was all Woori, they kicked 8 goals to 3 in the 2nd, 6 goals to 3 in the 3rd and then held Silvan to a solitary point in the last. Woori should have won by another 5 goals but an inaccurate 2 goals 9 in the last quarter cost them a bigger margin. A great win by The Tigers with Patrick Sharp outstanding, Michael Riseley (5 goals) and Matthew Stolarczyk dominant all day. Silvan's best: Daniel Norman, Trent Matthews & Rhett Newell with Gary Moorcroft once again a lone hand down forward kicking 5.
In 2nd Division there was meant to be five games to report on. The Yarra Glen v Yea game will have to be re- scheduled because of vandalism to Yarra Glen's ground making it unplayable. Let's hope the authorities catch the people responsible and deal with them appropriately.
As for the games that were played, Powelltown travelled to Belgrave with confidence after their breakthrough win last week over Yarra Glen. Belgrave were thumped by Olinda the week before and had to bounce back and bounce back they did. Belgrave winning 24.18.162 to 16.8.104. Belgrave were the better team all day as they ran harder and used the ball a lot better than their opponents. Belgrave booted 14 goals in the 1st half to Powelltown 7 setting up a comfortable win for the Magpies. Belgrave's Jacob Meyer was outstanding kicking 8 goals, Corey Bowman, Darren Sidebottom & Tim Riley were brilliant for the winners. Powelltown was served well by Jayden Mullan, Sam Camilleri, Luke Darwell (4 goals) & Chris Ozols (4 goals).
Emerald hosted Yarra Junction and got back on the winners list with a 20 point victory. 10.14.74 to 7.12.54. Even though it was only a 20 point margin Emerald were never in danger of dropping this game. Junction could only manage 3 behinds in the 1st quarter as Emerald booted 4.6 to take a 27 point lead into the 1st change. Junction showed some resistance in the final quarter but by then it was all too late. Emerald would be happy with their no fuss win over an improving Junction side. Emeralds best: Matthew Livermore (3 goals), Michael Scoon and Alexander Hellriegel. For Yarra Junction: Brad Charman, Ben Lever and Travis Barton all played well.
Olinda took on Kinglake at Kinglake and came away with a 56 point win 24.15.159 to 15.13.103. Olinda has been nothing short of brilliant so far this season and at quarter time they held a 39 point lead with another 100 point plus win looming. Kinglake had other ideas and held their own in the next 2 quarters matching Olinda in every facet of the game. Apart from the 1st quarter Kinglake will be happy with their efforts but they will know if you don't put 4 quarters together against the best it will never be good enough. Olinda's best: Dylan Troutman, Nick Broomhall, and James Reid with Blake Walter continuing his good form in front of goal booting 5. For Kinglake Cameron Scott, Jacob Sibenaler & James Walker (3 goals) were amongst their best.
Thornton Eildon hosted Seville in what was one of the more entertaining games of the round. With Seville taking a 2 point lead into half time this was anyone's game. Seville came out hard in the 3rd and kicked 7 goals to 3 to take a 4 goal lead. Thornton tried hard but just couldn't bridge the gap in the last quarter as Seville went on to record a hard fought 28 point win: 20.7.127 to 15.9.99. Seville's Shaun Wilson was best a field and was supported well by Dean Troyann and Rowan Collins. For Thornton Rhys Chapman, Brandon Kapakoulakis and Steve Coonan were their sides best.
