On principle, I always go through the proper checkout, unless there are super queues, as I figure the cost of employee wages are costed in to the item price. Why should I pay that price, and do their job for them.

I suppose I should get out more..🤨
I’ll wait and make them open up a checkout - here on the Sunny Coast, after 6pm they only have 2 staff at front of store…one manning the self checkouts like a guard at the royal palace and the the other faffing about…like you, i do it on principle and sometimes if I’m feeling saucy, ill pay cash with a $50 or $100…gee they hate that, especially if you make them work instead of rounding up the amount…hehe

I had to use the one at Kmart the other week - had my daughters in tow and we were in a hurry to get to netball. The queue was a mile long, so i went through the self checkout…3 goes to complete the transaction because two items had security tags and i had to call the attendant back twice to remove them….would have been so much easier if they just paid their staff to man the checkouts properly

If I don’t go supermarket shopping once a week I probably wouldn’t be going anywhere (😉 not quite true) so we make a morning of it. We take a LIST - essential. We’ve been known to return home to retrieve said list 🙄

We park undercover and hook a Woolies trolley on the way in as we’ll be going to Aldi first and don’t want to pay for one of their trolleys.

As luck would have it Coles, Aldi and Woolworths are side by side. Trundling our Woolies trolley we go into Aldi and quickly find our preferred items. Also explore the Special Buys tables in the middle of the store for interesting items. We bought a robot vacuum cleaner there a few months ago and it’s changed our lives 😃.

We get some cash out in Aldi. Then into Woolies for the rest of the items on the list. We like to browse the meat department for a couple of nice-looking steaks or a lamb leg. We’re also on the lookout for the yellow price reduction tags on the shelves.

We always use the staffed checkout, even if it means a wait.

Sometimes one of us will duck into Coles on the way back to the car, we like some of their products.

Unpacking and putting stuff away isn’t fun, then it’s time to brew the coffee ☕

We should have a team full of Scotsmen. I was watching the wrestling recently and Drew McIntyre [a Scot] came out with a great quote:
"We're the most passionate people in the world. In WWE they've called me the Terminator, the Warrior, the Psychopath. In Scotland, they just call me Drew, because we're all like that."

There used to be a guy somewhere in Bay around Bay 35-38 ( I can’t remember what Bay i used to be in since i gave up my seat after Covid and moved interstate despite sitting in it for over 10 years…old aga is a bastard) with a thick Scottish accent….used to love hearing him yell out….

I do the same. They are trying to reduce their employee count. Margins are greater on self-checkout even with a bit of extra pilfering. So they want you to use the self checkout. I'd rather the money went to an employee than a shareholder. Then they have the nerve to make you stand in a queue waiting to check your own goods out!

:fist::cloud::cloud:

For a number of reasons (including this one) I try to avoid the two majors and go to IGA or Aldi instead.
Funny enough, I spoke to staff at our local Coles about the increase in automated check outs, and my concerns on job losses. Her response was that the online shopping had increased the demand for packers, and they were actually recruiting more staff.

I live two hours from Melbourne so I catch the train down to the footy to save on fuel. I’m also forty minutes from the nearest train station to have services running after the footy - so going to a night game means I get home at 2am. On top of all of that, Friday nights “extra footy service” is a bus and last Friday it smelt like a public toilet and the driver drove it like he stole it, which means I’ll probably never go to a night game again because the trip home gave me motion sickness and now I’m put off

I can sympathise, I live regionally too, and we tend to catch the train. Except one Friday night when we played the Cats and lost and the return trains were cancelled, meaning we had a bus full of Cats supporters and a manic bus driver, who would only brake at the last moment. We were all air braking frantically for him. Never again!

Sadly I read every post in this train wreck of a thread. As a result, I now have a lengthy secret list of posters that will get a perma ban first opportunity you give me.

I've experimented with the train a couple of times this year, but getting home after 1am (additional half hour drive from the station) is a killer. I'd rather drive the 2+ hours home myself, as Miss GJ and I did last Friday night. Although she turned her headset up after I kept blurting out "blasted umpires", "why didn't we tag Neale?!", "I HATE driving home after a loss like THAT!!!", every few minutes.. ☹

I shan't complain to Coles Online because they sent me a four pack of red velvet cookies with only three in the pack. Reason? They also mistakenly sent me a four pack of red velvet cupcakes that I didn't order. That's a win.

Counting to 4 is a Certificate 4 qualification in numeracy. Sadly, a Cert 3 was on duty for the packing of your red velvet cookies.

For god’s sake. There was so much great stuff at the Olympics; the Fox sisters, Jess Hull, Nina Kennedy, the swimming team - we have the most gold medals we have ever won yet people keep crapping on about Raygun. FMD
It’s having the desired effect….distraction.

She was absolutely woeful though
