Does Ricciutto give away the free for "too high" or does Johncock get pinged for holding the ball as he ducked his head?

In answer to your question though i'd say holding the ball as long as Roo can adjust his tackle from too high to just around the shoulders. If not then high should be paid because Roo has mad no effort to adjust his tackle

Umpires discretion.

The 'high' vs 'holding the ball' are always difficult ones, because both teams really deserve the free depending on which angle the umpire is looking at it from.

Interesting that in rugby league the rules state:

1. A player is guilty of misconduct if he:
(a) ...
(b) when effecting or attempting to effect a tackle makes contact with the head or neck of an opponent intentionally, recklessly or carelessly.

However, as people who watched the SoO would have seen, almost every tackle has contact to the neck. But, no penalty is given unless it is violent or dangerous.

Contrast to footy when the merest brush on the shoulder is given as a free. Why not let a bit more go?

Otherwise then you would have the debacle of umpires paying some free kicks and not the others and the different interpretation of each umpire on the degree of contact.

This is an easy one. The high tackle happens before the holding the ball even comes into play so it would be a high tackle.

Yes, but you also have to be satisfied that when Stiffy ducks his head he doen't lower his shoulders in the same action. If his shoulders stay at the same level its a high tackle; if he ducks his head and shoulders as Roo makes the tackle its holding the ball.

45,000 screaming home town fans have already given you grief over your last ''wrong'' decision , the one you followed by the manual, ie asking if the tackle was a clear one or if the opponent that was tackled contributed to the infringement, you have 2 seconds to make a call otherwise you will compound your mistake by not making a call...and you know the Geesh will haul you over the coals for not making a call rather than making an incorrect call... and the extra pocket money you make as an AFL umpire will help pay for the new babys nursery and you dont want to jeapordise that... so you see Roos arm drape over the shoulder and you blow your whistle, but as you do Stiffy ducks, youve blown your whistle, whats your call

Too high

To me, clearly Stiffys free.

The Roo has blatantly got his arm over Johncocks shoulder. Before he had the chance to hold the ball.

Too easy....ask any Umpy !! :D

Good post !!
