I'll be bitterly disappointed if at least one or two young players cannot force their way into the senior side. We need to continue to improve & evolve to stay ahead of the chasing pack. I'd like to see a player such as Turner excel and force out a player on the fringe. Possibly one of our new draftees.

Martyn. Reckon he will be the best of the new batch.

Good thoughts and ideas, however I think our issue in 2018 was refusing to USE depth players and repeatedly running our best 22 into the ground so they were out of puff come the tail end of the year.

Blokes like Miles & Lloyd should have been played more to allow guys like Dusty to rest when carrying minor soft tissue injuries.
Yep to go a bit further you could say so many injuries early 2019 was a godsend forcing them to play and get games into others depending on your outlook.

its now february time for this months team.

Atm my ideal team would go

B/ Grimes - Astbury - Vlastuin.
HB/ Houli - Balta - Broad..

5 regulars there with only the needed kpd Balta coming in for Where Rance would have played.Imo its very important to get games into Balta and have a genuine big sized KPD to help Astbury.

C/ Lambert - Ross - Pickett.
R/ Nankervis - Martin - Prestia.

Im starting Ross here reckon another preseason he will be right to go as a permanent fixture. And imo we need a few more big bodied mids. Could have named Cotch in the middle and Ross on the bench but what the heck eh who starts is neither here nor there.

HF/ Edwards - Riewoldt - Bolton.
F/ Castagna - Lynch - RC-D.

Riley to be a big part of midfield rotations swapping with Dusty. He also gives us a genuine third tall option at 193cm?

Int/ Cotchin - Stack - Graham - Caddy.

Someone could miss here if we go with a second ruckman.

INS Balta for Short. Ross for Baker. RC-D for Rioli. Stack for Ellis. Graham for Soldo.
Still 5 changes from the g/f and imo only RC-D is a real stretch atm.

Finally in the past when all have been fit and available the club has religiously gone with the four tall defenders in Broad, Grimes, Astbury Rance. Im assuming with another preseason behind him Balta will now be in a position to join the three remaining tall defenders.

Good mix of youth and experience with a plethora of multi-positional players for flexibility.
5 players in who have barely played a game at senior level and I still reckon that team beats anyone.

Backs:
Grimes Astbury Vlastuin
Houli Balta Stack

Mids:
Castagna Ross Pickett
Soldo Cotchin Prestia

Forwards:
Edwards Riewoldt Caddy
Martin Lynch Bolton

Int:
Lambert Graham RCD Naish

Don't have a problem with that team whatsoever. I Would like to see a bit more from RCD and Nash before they get a spot. Love them, just not sure they are best 22 just yet. Hoping this year they both shine.

This is pretty much the side I picked while walking the dog in the dark this morning.
Rioli, whilst average last year, I think has a higher ceiling than we've seen., so I think he will be there. Maybe for Graham, with RCD and Ross in the side, might not be needed in the guts as much. But he is next in and there is always an injury, so effectively he will play. Can't see RCD lining up forward though.

After a 37 year drought we all know how hard it can be to win a flag. I'll be spewing if we blow any more chances. The coaching group are great. The playing group are great. It looks like they believe winning flags is their raison d'etre. Lead by Cotch. In 2020, what I'm relaxed about is depth. On G/Final day, I think we could win with any of: Stack, Graham Ross Kmac, Balta, , CJ, , RCD, Higgins, Chol. Not sure about Naish, Turner, Garth Markov yet.
Played bloody well when he was called up, only dropped due to Ellis coming back in. We'll see plenty of Naish this year.

rioli is best22

good to see him looking fitter too

One thing a lot of you are forgetting when naming your sides is that Dimma and the committee love players who are flexible in what positions they can play. It’s vital to have these sorts of players in case things aren’t working for us on game day. Players like RCD, Ross, Graham can only play one position so I doubt we will ever see them all in the one team.

I have no doubt they will play Rioli but in being honest i dont think he is best 22 and the side can be better balanced without him atm. For me its time for Rioli to live up to all the hype he gets.
I can see Rcd spending time fwd in much the same way Dusty does. but primarily he plays as a mid.
Imo at 193 or 195cm depending on the source, explosive and aggressive we would be crazy not to rotate and develop him as a mid/fwd.Imo he would be ideal rotating fwd with the champ dusty.

Also if its structure we are looking at he gives us a genuine tall to go with TL and JR and its balanced out with smalls like Bolton, Castagna Lambert Edwards Rioli, Stack, Pickett and Graham.Opposition will have to play a decent sized player on him possibly freeing up JR and TL even more.

I can see why you want RCD forward but given he hasn't played there at all in the VFL... But he may train over summer there for all we know so you may be right. A utility is better than a single position player. Rioli adds something because every touch something happens. But I agree, last season when he should have had a breakout year, he didn't. So one more crack before he learns a bit more in the VFL. Just can't see that he has reached his peak. Preseason form will tell more.

Your proabley right but they are very young who knows

RCD size might help his versatility if he can improve his footy iq outside of the hussle and bussel of the guts

Worth watching his Draft Highlights again just to see what he is going to be like when he has a few years in the system. Showed him steaming out of full forward on a lead and marking at one stage. So he has probably played forward at times. His pace is what makes him so exciting.

The way I see it.
Stack and Ross come in to the best 22
1st drop-Balta,Garth,Higgins, Naish, CCJ & RCD
2nd drop-Egg, Turner, Dow, English, Chol

basically the 1st drop are the next in line and ready to go and should be prioritised. The 2nd drop are the development kids that may get a gig if they play well in the 2s
All the other young blokes will struggle to get a game in 2020

tbh good luck picking a side.
It’s above my pay bracket that’s for sure

Hearing that Rance will be back inside 6 months.

Only quit for jehovah witness reasons, as they’re not allowed income for 12 months after marriage breakdown.

WTF, oh of course, the Lord will provide I suppose :drunk:
