its not in IMDBS top 250 shows, its pretty middling in ratings overall

it was just popular enough to go for a long time

generic safe entertainment that didn't challenge people

I'd take it any day over the vast majority of "reality tv" which I ******* hate
I think the cast were the highest paid in TV at one point werent they?

It must have done great ratings numbers which is a measure of popularity.

Bit like Avatar, no one is listing it as their greatest ever movie but it made $2b or whatever.

critical acclaim and popularity are two different things, and often mutually exclusive

The Big Bang Theory is the worst, most irritating television series that's ever been produced, and nothing will ever top that.

I give that honour to cold feet. I show I never ever would have watched except that it aired every tuesday before Buffy and would go over its supposed end time, so I would usually end up watching the last 10 mins of this show about ugly british ****s trying to shag each other.

I feel like many many successful and "popular" things its overblown.

Its really no worse than most standard mass appeal sitcoms.

I do think Jim Parsons is ******* terrible in everything ive ever seen him in, including this.

Yeh, i never implied it was acclaimed, just popular and wildly so.

Have agreed with virtually all the takes so far. Here's some scorchers (hopefully).

Marvel has set society back both artistically and intellectually.

On the bright side, all the Jackass films are in the pantheon of art.

It's depressing but American film and TV content is overall better than the rest of the world's content. It's a primary reason why they remain the global superpower.

Trying to think of a TV show but can't.

Suppose it's not like you are going to sit thru multiple episodes of TV you can't stand, compared to a one off movie.
You could say one's you tried but quit.

For instance I loathe Aaron Sorkin's The West Wing and The Newsroom and quit both halfway through season 1.

The movie "Her" is a stinking load of bullshit and an insult to any intelligent person.

I'd add The Descendants to this for critically acclaimed films of that era.

Book is way better.
I'd believe this.

They made us watch it in school 20 years ago. Hated it.

The more modern sci-fi I consume, the more you see Blade Runner as an inspiration. So I figured, give it another go, open mind this time. Go in expecting to like it.

The premise is very intriguing. And the start of the movie is great, brilliant set up. But then it just bloody ambles along in 1st gear until the finale. So I have no doubt the source material covers everything in better detail.

I liked the film fine, don't get me wrong, as a world building venture that creates a good atmosphere. The novels instead explores humanity in the face of technology and a decaying society.

As such the book is rather different. The book argues humanity has the ability to care/empathise and androids don't. This struck a chord with me and maintains its relevancy with the threat of AI. In the film from memory the Replicants have the ability to care.

These are some popular classics of certain vintage (say 30+ years old) which aren’t to my taste at all.

The Wizard of Oz
The Goonies
Sleepless in Seattle
It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World
The Russians are Coming! the Russians are Coming!
Basic Instinct
Eraserhead

Last year was a bizarre twilight zone one for me because the Razzie worst Picture was easily my #1 of the year (Blonde) and the Oscar Best Picture (EEAAO) among the worst seen that year, and my least fave Best Pic ever. I probably won’t beat that for an answer, was such a topsy-turvy Razzies/Oscar weekend to me which felt inevitable months out :drunk:

The Lord of the Rings is not just bad, it commits the cardinal sin of being boring.
Finally something I vehemently disagree with (although the 3rd one drags tbh). Good job :thumbsu:

Of those I've seen I've enjoyed the Wizard of Oz, It's a Mad... World and EEAAO. Haven't seen the rest.

Yeah, some of those family-friendly reruny ones I might not have minded so much as a kid (given their novel concept and the like), but I just can’t be one of those ongoing gushing adult fans, y’know. There is some strictly kid stuff that doesn’t stand up to adult viewing yet is rather harmless, but these are more actively grating to me. Just my situated vantage though, if people love them then I’m happy for them.
