Having said that i think the flag will come from 4th or 5th place this year IMO. If Woori scrape in and get back their VFL boys (which they will) then look out. Same with Brookers - no one has got hold of them this year with all but two losses being under 12 points. 4 straight wins from 4th or 5th to take it out...Has it been done before Derby?
And quite possible this year, the most even in memory. Any side making the five is a genuine chance. And seven sides have a realistic chance of getting in. Even Wandin is still not without hope.
It may eventually come down to who can keep a full list.
However, the top sides of Monbulk and Warby - but particularly Olinda - will be hard to get past and must have at least a slight start by finishing top 3.
Also, if you check the other sides losses, most of them have had very narrow misses, too.

Would be big if Olinda won the flag, what year did they win Divi 2? '09? Huge for the club to win two division flags in three years.

Finger, not all of us have the privilege of working 9 to 5.

Not for 30 years. Mount Evelyn have a very difficult run home. Gembrook will probably need to win at either Olinda or Monbulk to make it. Upwey have four winnable games and are in the box seat for the double chance now. Olinda v Monbulk on the 20th of August could be interesting.

Upwey will need to bring some spare players (to lend) this week - a long list of injuries at YG will see a possible forfeit in the reserves - either that or play a dozen or so kids which is not fair as they are headed for finals. A bye at this time of year would be handy!

If we work on the assumption that Emerald and Seville are odds on to play in the GF and that either could pull it off depending how they are on the day, are there any thoughts on which one would cope better after being promoted to Division 1?

No doubt there will be people at both clubs that think they'll have no problems in Div 1. You speak to a lot of them and they believe there's only a small gap between the two divisions. Truth is they've both been in Div 2 for to long and those habits can't be broke in a year. Yarra Glen went up with a far better side than both and recruited yet have struggled. Both would want to recruit big time.

Your bias surely blinds you RHT. Gembrook it would be fair to say have the oldest list in Div 1.

Bias may be true Finger but Sat team had 4 players over 30 (Clarky/Richo/Shippy & Creeper) 4 players between 23 and 30 and the rest 22 and under. Most of the young guns that played or were selected for Interleague (AJ, Rick Causer, Nata Muratore, Shane Williams, Nath Laversha, Steve Gough etc) are all under 22. I still think the club will be strong for many years to come.

Yeah fair point V8 ... i mean Monniehawk.:D Everyone has been in the same boat. One of the most remarkable seasons that i have seen.

It'd be a more damning statistic if you'd won the game, haha. Not super impressive.. How about your 2's side? Many blokes pushing for selection? What age groups are we talking here?

My money is actually on the men in fluoro orange on that one - I'm sick of being the oldest guy on the ground!!! Although couldn't claim that title a few weeks ago at Seville vs Yarra Junction... :)

Finger - I agree with most of the above. There is a gap no doubt. YG have a similiar side to last year - We had a few retire and one relocate and we replaced these players. Our best 21 would be very competitive but not once have we been able to put our best side on the park and the gap in divisions is highlighted big time in your top up players. My advice is do not rely on 21 players - you need a good list of 30. Last year we had a lot of luck with our list and was full strentgh most weeks - rd 18 was a bruising encounter against Alex at Alex - I reckon we would of lost the following week but fortunately had the week off. This week we have about 30 players to fill two sides. Last week in the Reserves we had 6 players play who have not played for years - they will struggle to come up again this week. I hope Upwey won't be as damaging as Woori!!

I knew you would comment on this finger! But I almost agree... Dont think Yarra Glen were a far better side, there wouldnt be much difference between them and the river pigs didnt recruit all that well. I do agree both Emerald and Seville would have to recruit well just to avoid relegation. Like you say they have both been in Div 2 for a long time and even their better players would take some time to adjust to the standard.

A realistic plan would be to retain their current lists, pick up 5 or 6 good players and win 4 or 5 games in their first year up. Knowing Seville pretty well i would think the side they have this year would be able to win a few at the potato chip but they would be in a similar boat as yarra glen.

Have heard a few whispers of late that the league is looking to implement U17 at junior level and U19 at senior level instead of U16 to U18s.
Has anyone else heard about this? Maybe Greame could confirm or deny.

My point of view is that, with Warby anyway we will be in the same boat if not worse as this year struggling to field a side and relying on U16s from wessy to fill some gaps. I like the overage rule and again this has helped us field sides. I just feel that the main issue to the U18s comp is the overage player rule at U16s that has killed us this year and speaking to other clubs they have the same issue.

Some thing needs to be done to improve the situation, I don't know what, if i did trust me I would speak up. Has anyone got any thoughts. As U18s are so important to all clubs for their future.

Long term? It would have to be Emerald.
Fair to say they have been their own worst enemy and have underperformed for decades. They should not be in Div 2. If they fix their culture and not just the list, they have every asset required for a successful stay in Div 1.
e.g. compare Emerald's situation to Seville and neighbouring Gembrook.
Good sized town of 6,500 places them in the top group size-wise.
A High School directly across the road.
Successful junior club as feeder.
Thriving local economy.

Most are probably aware that EFL looked at the same thing recently and made some changes. Text taken from their website...

The EFL Board has approved a change to the structure of football at ages 16-19. In 2012, the under 16 competition will be replaced by an under 17 competition and the under 18 competition will be replaced by an under 19 competition.
A review of these age groups has occurred over an 18 month period to identify the most suitable structure for these transition years of football, and to maximise the number of participating teams.
During the consultation, some key points have consistently been identified.
1. There is a general belief that junior football finishes too early, with 16 year olds turning 17 (current bottom age colts) not the most appropriate age for young men to enter a senior club environment.
2. The transition of most players from under 18 to senior EFL football is becoming increasingly difficult as the standard across all divisions continues to improve.
3. The most developed players will continue to move through at their own pace but for many another year in an under-age competition will be of benefit.
4. The number of transfers of under 19 players to other competitions and the success of the development player permit program has demonstrated a strong desire for many players to play another year in an underage environment before moving to senior football.
5. A change to under 17 at junior level will align the EFL with other junior metropolitan leagues that border us (YJFL, SE Juniors, MSJFL), assisting EFL senior clubs aligned with these junior clubs to field an under-age team.
It is envisaged that many clubs will enter two under 17 teams. Some may choose to differentiate these as bottom age (under 16) and top age (under 17), others will allocate them to teams based on ability and /or physical stature.
Where a team is a predominantly bottom age team they will be graded in the lower divisions.
For clubs that enter one team, the 24 month age gap will make it easier to get the required numbers and teams will be graded on ability accordingly.

If the EFL are looking at it, so do we. The bordering clubs can't allow the EFL to steal a march.
Obviously they are feeling the pinch with kids as well and that is why they are looking to change. The problem will be a forging a synergy with the DRJFL.
We do pretty well, on the whole, with much smaller pops to draw from and we produce a good quality kid.
Still keep hammering the use of twilight games - Fri, Sat and Sun. We need a few more grounds like Woori to boost the lights and the league should investigate setting up strategically lit grounds to get the kids away from kicking the dew in the wee hours. Put the kids in front of a crowd after main games and make them feel wanted.

Spot on MH, that would make a huge difference. 18s to play Sat nights after the Seniors. Would also allow a few "vounteers" a little more sleep on a Sat morning as well potentially.

Tees make sure mister Sid adds the lights to the grand plans with the Trillion upgrade at the OFCFNC. Watching Footy there on a cold & foggy night would remind me of a certain Film- "Im sure if you build it, they will come":thumbsu:

l see on the EFL forum that Frank Lesiputty & Healsville have parted ways, is this effective immediately or at seasons end?

I was listening to the YV footy show last Friday night, and Billy had Kym Eastcourt on the program (H'ville Prez). I'd tuned in just after Bill had asked Kym whether anyone had been approached to coach H'ville in 2012. She answered in a way that suggested to me that Frank may have already told H'ville he wouldn't be seeking reappointment next year. If that was the case, then maybe Frank has just brought that forward 4 weeks ?

Interesting to note that the ladder in Div 1 as it is now and after the topsy turvy season has only 1 change in it from last year - Mt Eve out and last years 6th placed team, Monbulk in.

I know that the final ladder will change over the coming weeks but interesting just 3 weeks out...

Anyway that is my useless stat for the week - I much prefer Derby's stats.

heres one for you....Olinda Ferny Creeks first Win at Mt Evelyn since 1967 and after 43 games 21 each with 1 draw

Big trouble up at the Villes apparently the coach "resigned" but has been on the efl forum and written a pretty cryptic post almost saying he was forced out. Anyone know what happened up there.
