Berko Bevo vs. the former Muckraker Morris in the Round 1 presser

Was Bevo right in the way he ran the presser

  • Hell yes! Bring back the Biff, Bevo.

  • Yes, but he went a little too far

  • No, but protecting players is key

  • No, totally unacceptable but that is it, move on

  • No, totally unacceptable and needs a sanction

  • I barrack for another club and just want to see the results

  • I am in the media and need my next news story

Legally Morris is perfectly entitled to report what he heard and doesn't need to name his sources. It's about ethics according to Bevo, especially as he blames Morris for using leaks from the club to benefit the team he apparently barracks for.

Bevo's take is that respectable journos (he named Sam Edmond as an example) will instead ring the coach and say "look I heard this news from inside your club. Not good eh? thought you'd like to know that info like this is leaking out of your club".

Bevo also played the player mental health card. I struggled for a while to see how he could blame Morris for that. It seemed like a shot from the hip but I'm not a club insider - maybe there's something to it.

As others have said it plays right into the media's hands. Fox's ratings will go up and Morris will probably get a bonus. Meanwhile - under siege from the media - the players, coaches and staff will be distracted from fixing flaws in our game. That was the real story that should have come out of tonight.

Bevo's take seems pretty naive to me. Like generally journalists want to keep sources and break stories. I can totally see how that isn't what the club wants, which would be frustrating, but it seems a weird to expect a journalist to put the club ahead of their work.

Protocol is (according to Bevo) to confirm leak with club and give club advance notice you're going to run the story. Bevo (coach) indicated Riley Beveridge and other journos do just that. Morris does not, and tries to make out he has facts which are more likely rumours - beyond the team selection issue this week.
But the funny thing is Bevo just confirmed the story as accurate. If the story is accurate, why does the journalist have an obligation to tell the club they are going to run it?

Now I understand player welfare, but it is team selection which is pretty public knowledge.

This reminds me of the Malthouse feud with Mark Stevens years ago… the press conferences became better viewing than the game.
Gee Bevo really cracked it didn’t he! Would love them to find the leak and out them publicly.

What I find difficult to resolve is Bevo quite rightly talking about the affect the media can have on players psychological well being then turns around and publicly and viciously denigrates a member of the media. He basically displayed the very thing he was arguing against
I think this is a very valid and good point. I don't think anyone is going to dispute there's a double standard there.

Whole things funny to me but Bevs off his rocker with this take. Journo was doing his job. Does he really think Morris was muckraking to get his side an advantage? Absolutely no chance
So even if Tom Morris got the story wrong about Hunter Bevo has the right to call him out on it

Beveridge creates too many enemies in the media. The last thing you want is to be fighting battles that are irrelevant to winning games and premierships. I know he wants to stand up for his players but it's distracting for him and the players. Far better to ignore these scumbags and not get sucked in to a battle when the narrative is entirely controlled by them.

The revolution is not an apple that falls when it is ripe. You have to make it fall. C G.

Well Bevo did talk about revolution season launch but little did we know he was going to give ole apple tree such a big shake in his first post game pressor ….
Might as well shop early I suppose

EAD Tom Morris you ******* grubby journalist fu**.

I hope this snowballs in to the rest of the coaching fraternity holding the AFL media to account.

Bunch of of snaky ******* rats!!

PS... Anyone that defends the media on these kind of matters should hand their membership back.

This is the content I came here for absolute gold! So embarrassing hahahahah

Not in the way he did. 😂😂😂
I'd be very surprised if he doesn't get a please explain from afl headquarters.

The leak is the issue.

True indeed, every club goes through these moments. I love Bevo's passion and defensiveness of his players. His main message about the mental health aspects of players lives will now unfortunately be lost in his attack upon the integrity of another human being, someone with family just like the players, just like the rest of us. I hope he sees this and makes amends so he can continue to be an exemplar. I hope you guys get on top of the leaks, they destroy communities with distrust.

This.

Bevo made specific reference to players mental health, and Morris continually breaking protocol on stories.

Clearly straw that broke the camels back, especially after Bailey Smith.

Worst case scenario - suspension for Bevo. Who coaches next week?

Also a bad scenario - the leaker is outed by media, and reports of internal divisions snowball. Let's hope we don't have Bevo suspended, and assistant named as temporary coach then named as leaker!

I'm afraid Bev's outburst is more to do with his anger and frustration that after 5 and a half months of reflection and planning there is still a gulf between Melbourne and us. In fact, what we saw tonight again exposed our weaknesses for anybody to see.
Obviously, the journo needed some admonishment but not to the extent of a public flogging.
Bev needs to get his head around the challenging task of improving team performance which on tonight's showing, requires much hard work.
