my first child started school this year. in every single parents forum/facebook group etc that im part of there are mutiple discussion about whether to hold their child back a year and start them in school as a 6 year old. i have only been exposed to these discussion in the past year or so because i have had to consider my child schooling so i have no idea whether its previously been common or not but a so many parents with kids the same age as my daughter are choosing to hold them back for 12 months from school. maybe in the next generation of kids coming through it might be seen more?
My son will turn 5 on the first day of school next year. I’m having that same discussion now

I assume a few with March-April birthdays, but is it really all that common for December kids? The fact that not a single player in the past decade has been in the system while completing school suggests to me that it happens, but it’s actually uncommon. For comparison all of Ginnivan, McInness and Daicos had birthdays within a month of Christian and none were held back.
It will be big in about 5 years time in terms of draftees, but wasn't big 13 years ago when current draftees were entering school.

Used to go both ways as well. Kids born post cut off date enrolled as an bottom ager. I was always the youngest in my class group as a consequence of it.

Ben Quaynor playing for the chargers Knights this season.

This kid I saw in the off season training with some of the boys. He has some leap.

Lets hope he goes okay. But not too.. okay.

Isn’t that the Northern Knights jumper?
Goodness you're right. I didn't even pay attention.

Still NGA eligible? even though not in the chargers? Our NGA prospects seem to come from Oakleigh so I'm not even sure now. lol

Fairly sure that a player who’s been in a club NGA academy for a number of years stays in that academy even if they move away. Otherwise the system would have been rife with families ‘moving’ to get their kids to their preferred destination.

Easy mistake. :)

Hopefully we still have access to him if he shows good signs this year.

The way the rule reads to me we would have had access to him for another year, but since he (apparently) didn't nominate for the National Draft he shouldn't be eligible. If that's correct and he turns out to be half decent, that will be rather annoying!

He didn't nominate for the draft? Thats gonna make it difficult.

Ugel-Hagen was Zone to the Western Jets but played for the Chargers and still was a NGA Pick

He's not on the list, and it looks as if that would have been the final one:

That part of the rule looks pretty clear to me, sadly!

The Western Bulldogs were able to claim (NGA overager) Cody Raak as a pre-selected Cat. B Rookie late last year, but he had nominated for the draft in 2020, and missed out.

Well..

That's unfortunate.
Still possible we can get him, just not through the NGA.

McMahon starting to show a bit in the practice matches apparently. Long time till the end of 2023 so I wouldn’t go too early on delisting him.
Agreed. I reckon he shows a bit and different players develop differently. Give him a few pre seasons and a run without injury then make a decision. Patience can be a virtue especially with some of the skinnier lads.

Given the top 40 protected zone, I'm not sure him not nominating is going to be a problem. I doubt too many clubs are eying him off. Yeah, it would be nice to guarantee but on the same token, if he's any good, he'd likely go in the top 40. So I'm not too disappointed.

Hopefully they change the top 40 aspect. Just make it top 20

On the nab league app, playing for the chargers we have two NGA

Yuyu Ashwin wearing #8 (winger?)
Riley Voulanas wearing #38 (small forward)

any info you have on them? eDPS PMBangers

But the question is why have an academy if there's no discount. You throw money into players ... who turn out to be too good they're swept up by a club. Clubs then click on to this, do dodgy stuff to prevent players being noticed and it is a total nightmare. All this is leading to is an older system or one implemented in the UK and Europe. You have your academy players which you're guaranteed and you buy/sell/drop them. The American model doesn't factor in academies as they have college. Australia doesn't have a uni/college culture so it wouldn't work here. But an academy model doesn't work in a system that has a draft. Academies help to grow the game but harm the draft. Endless cycle here.
