The 2022 Mid-Season Rookie Draft will be held on Wednesday, 1 June with the same rules as last year (see article below).

When do we know if we have any selections in the draft? Do we need a long term injury? Would Murphy's qualify?

I've been thinking we need to bolster our inside midfielder stocks and intercept or general defenders which look kinda thin.

We've picked up Noble (2019) Johnson and Begg (2021) so have made good use of it recently.

Who would you like us to look at?

We would need a spot. On the rookie or senior? list.

Or put someone on the LT1 that would have to be out for, what is it, 3 months at least? Murphy and Dean are out of the moon boots.

We have 1 cat B spot, but that may not be something we can cover in the MSD. Unless its someone from another sport thats just come back to footy.

I really like Casey Voss and how he’s started the year. He’s developed slowly but his last year and a bit has been really good. If he keeps putting up the numbers I think he’d be one to have a look at. Not the quickest but has a good footy brain (obviously from his dad) and solid skills.

I hope no-one gets injured but if they do the mid-season draft presents interesting opportunities.

Seems really f’ed that it's less than 2 months to the draft

Why?

We've still got time for Murphy to return and pick up another long-term injury and we'll get a pick or alternatively we just need to pick Kelly for a game of seniors and he'll create a LTI spot to use in the draft.

Just a shame the MSD comes before our Round 14 bye when Jordy will no doubt commit a sackable offence.

Just in terms of my perception of time this year, more than anything.

The curse of the no. 20 jumper lives on

If we end up with a pick in the draft Bailey Rogers would be my first choice. WAFL sandover medal winning midfielder. Plays inside mid with versatility to go forward or back. He's in that sweet age bracket for us too at 24yo.

Can we put Madgen back on the Cat B list (to replace Keane's spot) to open a MSD pick?

Good question.

Hey sideswipe any chance you could share/pm me the AFL rules document so I can read the rules on this?

You can always find the latest version of the rules and regulations here: AFL Policies & Terms
Everybody should have a copy of their own! There's the two key files to look for (they've only recently been updated), plus the CBA one is worth grabbing as well:

Legend. Thanks for sharing.

I’ll be keeping a keen eye on two 20 year old Tassie boys playing for South Adelaide.

Jye Menzie & Mitch O’Neil

Menzie is an absolute goal sneak. From limited viewing he plays very similar to Dan Butler (maybe even a bit of Papley). Kicked 4.3 in his first outing last weekend

Draft profile

O’Neill was Tassies best prospect in the 2019 draft after being two time AA. Sublime skills but crueled by injuries in his draft year. Ended up getting picked up in Rookie draft by the Eagle, but delisted a year later. Not exactly sure what happed there, but has started like a house on fire this year for the Panthers with 33 disposals and 1 goal.

I wouldn't mind Menzie

Menzie's best is very good but his worst is not so great... if he has continued to improve he could be a chance. O'Neill had injuries at West Coast but he struggled mentally in his draft year trying to cope with expectations. Hopefully he is in a good place and can get a second chance cause he is very talented!

I doubt we'd be able to - he did his maximum rookie stint.

I read the rules and I don't think it's possible for Madgen to return to the Cat B list. He spent 3 years on the rookie list from 2017-20 and was upgraded to the senior list following the 2020 season. You can only have 3 years on the rookie list.

I think it's also dubious whether after spending 1 and a bit seasons on the senior list whether you still maintain eligibility for the Cat B list as a player who has not been registered on an AFL list in the 3 years prior to inclusion on the rookie list.

Also is Keane officially off our list? I think we mutually agreed to part ways in January. Not sure if we can remove him straight away. I know there are primary list lodgement deadlines but I think it works differently with rookies. I'd need to dive into the rules again.

Don’t think we can formally remove him from the list until an AFL mandated list lodgement. Are there any of those before the end of the season?

I think lachlan Tardrew would be in the squad this week if he was available.

Tardrew has been playing fantastic football. His leadership and desperation are first class. A guy you'd love to see get an opportunity.
