The backline is not working, not rebounding, not intercept marking, not working. Who do you drop? If not Ryan then Cox. Teams are just kicking to grass and we have no answer. The pace in the backline is atrocious. Cox, Young, Ryan are well below average for pace and they are being exposed over and over again.

Yep the only quick defender we are playing is Clark. Someone has to be dropped from the back six for Walker,/Hughes/Wilson or someone has to be moved forward that isn’t Clark, and then Walker/Hughes/Wilson brought in to defense.
My opinion - out Logue, in Walker

First off, pace in the wet is a non factor. Adding rebound would make 0 difference yesterday and against GC. Walker is not making a diff, and is a worse defender than all of the guys you wanna drop.

Yesterdays issues were a bad game plan in the wet, flicking by handball and turning it over in shocking areas (almost as many handballs as kicks yesterday) and forward of center we are shocking.

The back line is struggling cause we’re conceding so many i50s in bad spots.

Look at the real issue which is our forward line. Almost 100 i50s in 2 weeks for only 10 goals.

Calling for Hughes and Wilson. Wow we have short memories

Banfield has done nothing. No pressure, no goals, no link up. He is flat footed and goes sideways or backwards when he gets the ball.
Jlo wants a footsoldier, but Banfield is not a footballer .
I don’t want to see Banfield ever play for Fremantle in the AFL again.
Enough is enough. He is completely out of his depth at this level and should not be put out there every week by the match committee only to suffer ritual humiliation and abuse at the hands of the fanbase every time we play a remotely competitive side and he is inevitably a total passenger.
It’s as predictable as night follows day at this stage.
He’s had enough chances, more than most player of his ability and has ground out a solid 40 odd game career which is a great result for him as a mature aged rookie recruit but the show is now clearly over. If he’s extended in any form beyond the end of this year there is something seriously rotten at this club.

I don't think the midfield was completely to blame for our backline this time. They were pretty ordinary all on their own.

Would much rather have Sturt in the team, he might apply as little pressure as Banfield but can hit the scoreboard. Sturt has kicked 3 goals a game for Peel in the last few weeks from memory.

In dry weather out with the wet

Looks like Friday will be raining but Saturday dry in Melb pretty much all day at the moment. Hopefully McG drains well enough not to retain too much surface moisture

We need this to go our way to kick more than 4 goals

Sturt and Erasmus have to be ins for me.

Also, is there a spot anywhere for Hughes. Feel like the bloke would compete well and give a bit of power from defence.
Ras is our future and his attributes such as tackling, goal nouse, and contested work (?) are all areas we are lacking. I think we should be playing him as well.

As for Sturt, give him his chance to earn his spot in the 22. Stop trying to be too cute around team selection.

I agree in part, but you could see us overusing the ball out of the middle straight away. Flicking the ball backwards and sideways rather than taking territory.

But you’re right, a lot of mistakes down back by every single one of them. Positioning, skills, etc etc.

Don't hate on the backs. Its not there fault its always down there. It's a strong dam wall but eventually will break as it has the ln last two weeks by a weak as piss forward line and defeated midfield.
Backline probably the strongest third.

Totally agree with Cobblers multiple messages IN: a balanced backline. We are mis shapen with 4 talls in the backline: Cox, Logue, Chappie and Pearce. I dont get it when Walker gets dropped for a tall. If Walker gets dropped a Wilson or similar should come in. If Ryan goes down, Hughes should come in etc etc. You dont replace a small with a tall. Only 3 of Cox, Logue, Pearce and Chappie should play at any one time. You can rotate them for all I care.

Same thing is happening up forward: two talls and 5 smalls!!! Who plays with 5 smalls???, its ridiculous and only works in certain conditions. Most of the great teams, including last years Premier (who has Fritsch), (the Hawks had Gunston), have a tallish mobile mid sized dead eye dick half forward flanker. The Pies have found one with the newbie who came on and kicked four against us. Again, I dont care who it is, lets get the structure right then find the personel. We seem to be reinventing the game plan to fit our personel, which is a valid option in some peoples eyes but its not working for us and tends to lend us to being stuck with only one type of game plan. We simply dont have the structural versatility to change it up mid game.

We are realistically unlikely to win the flag this year, lets use the year to experiment and get this right. First move would be to get one of the talented taller backmen up to the wing, Trav and Aish were nowhere tonight on the wing.
If Treacy was in form/fit, then wouldn’t mind Tabs, Lobb, Treacy- who comes in for Banfield. He’s quick enough, tall and good for a goal or two. Then, like Treacy, if Sturt was in form/fit he comes in for Colyer. That balances out the forward line. Colyer, Switkowski, Schulz, Walters is just overkill.
Switter with Walters and Schulz is fine as long as there’s decent medium forwards

He’s a stinker.

We had 4 tackles and 2 marks inside 50 from 46 entries.

Freddie Banfield both need to come out.

I'd have the boys out there this morning. Celebrating the rain, splash in some puddles. Maybe even get the slip'n'slides out. Have some fun in the wet and give some feel-good factor.

I think Longmuir definitely missed a trick not subbing Taberner off with "soreness" somewhere in the 3rd how much better would it have been to have Erasmus out there, fresh legs to bring it to the contest, whereas Tabs was more useful as a place for the seagulls to perch.

Having said that it is a fine line they're treading with the backline at the moment to keep the right balance. Given Narrm's set-up, this week we might have to keep all of Logue, Pearce and Cox in. Anyone too fussed with non-perfect games from the backs instantly suggests they've never played in a backline at any sort of decent competitive level and/or they've forgotten due to their playing days being waaay in the foggy recesses of the distance.

Also, many people here are massively overly fixated on the inclusion or exclusion of the 22nd/23rd selected player. It's low-hanging fruit. Of course he's going to be open to scrutiny and criticism, but the irrational levels of it don't do anyone any favours.

Pearce has to go out IMO.

Hes been pretty ordinary two weeks in a row now and clearly is not right. Lateral movement is shocking, has no confidence in kicking the footy and generally looked like he needs a rest.

Pearce and Walters. Senior guys who get games based on reputation. Both need to go.

Sonny was very good in the 2-3 weeks leading up to his H&S Protocols so i disagree on him. Pearce is IMO purely based on the way his ankle is, it is clearly an issue at the moment and its making him a liability.

Hard agree

One possibility is Young or Chapman on to Acres wing. Langdon is going to be out this week.
Walker in to Half back.
Pearce out, depending on how tall Melbourne play

I watched Wilson on the weekend v SOuth. Horrible, lazy footballer

We have won every game he's played in, and lost every game he hasn't played in. Stats don't lie.
So , all I’ve seen him do is burst out of the backline a few times per game and he has made mistakes and turned over the ball as well, the game plan and wasting multiple inside 50’s is the reason we’ve been beaten these last two games.

Pretty sure he leads the team in clangers
