Look I get that part of it, but players will always get lost. That’s why you need strong leadership especially from the guys down back.
I think it's probably just language. Not knowing the game plan being making some shit decisions in the heat of the moment.

It is pretty basic, built off territory and pressure. If you had 6 months of sitting in team meetings learning it there is zero excuses not to know it

Bit of difference between reading off a whiteboard and implementing the planned behaviour in a game when you’re largely operating by instinct. If you’ve been playing the game one way for a few years it could be tricky throwing off old habits.

Me thinks it is a little bit more complicated than that. Otherwise clubs spend a hell of a lot of money on coaches for not much intellectual effort. All they need to say is ‘kick it long and tackle’.

If this stuff is so easy why are coaches paid so much and why all the angst about Buckley’s coaching ability over the journey. Coaching is simple.

What like the medical examination he did pre draft?
No. Not at all. The pre-draft medicals would have looked at confirming or eliminating any issue. The medicals I imagine you would undergo at a new club would be to test standard metrics against the strength and conditioning coach's requirements and learning about a players abilities, or limitations therein, and then developing programmes that cater to those requirements. That's not a five minute exercise. Again, I don't know for sure, but I imagine that detailed programmes are developed for each player to address deficiencies and to build on strengths that then provide for the strongest, fittest version of the player to take to the field and carry out the coaching staff's plans. The strength and conditioning coaches would also want to see the new recruits assimilate and execute the programmes and to ensure that the player is ready and capable of performing to their maximum.

Sorry what? He is fit enough to dominate the SANFL over 4 quarters but not fit enough for the VFL?

So when Fly said there were players who’ve been struggling with the gameplan for 6 months, you think he was referring specifically to a player we drafted two days ago? Big news if true.

I think general play kicking and goal kicking are entirely different skills. Swan was a great kick at goal because he knew how to clear the mind it’s mechanical, shocking field kick though and …because he didn’t have the skill.
There's multiple mechanics in play with kicking - You need to be able to kick in a straight line, and with the right trajectory, but also to weight the ball correctly and judge the movement of the player you're kicking it towards.

Kicking at goal removes a few of those requirements, so you can be good at one and horrible at another. Brodie Holland was another - Good kick at goal, but couldn't hit a target around the ground because the ball just floated in the air when he kicked it.

From Fly's presser.

"He's not going to play this weekend... we don't want to throw him in the deep end - he doesn't know our structures or game plan yet."

"He's a hard running mid and he's played some great footy this year.

"We love his running capability we think he will really complement our midfield."

"If he can settle into our environment and play good footy at VFL level, he's a player we think can play AFL for the rest of the year."

Listening to Mcrae he is an elite runner but he still looks like a teen with puppy fat. Talk about a baby-faced kid!
Yeah the baby fat is a real fakeout with some kids.

One of my schoolmates was like that - puppy fat and round faced - but by god don't get on his wrong side . . . a thrashing machine had nothing on him!

Despite his elite performance on looks he really does look straight out of a country footy side - the professional environment may really elevate him over the next year or so
Has just had the one footy pre-season, having focussed mostly on cricket until the past year, so I drag out the dreaded 'plenty of upside' cliche.
