Bradley used to get tagged a lot - like every week. Often at centre bounces he would move himself (and his tagger) right away from the contest - creating a two on two.
With Madden in the ruck and Ratten as the rover, it made for easy pickings.
Now De Koning is no Madden (yet), but Hewett and Walsh/Kennedy are brilliant in contested situations.
Would have like to see us back in those guys, send Cripps forward and asked him to do exactly what Hawkins did to Weitering - make Blicavs irrelevant.

Another thing, people wonder about our small forwards not being at the feet of our talls.
They are sacrificing their game to pick up the slack when mids are given licence to push forward.
This is our version of the Martin/Petracca set up where mids can basically be defensively unaccountable and hurt the opposition in transition forward.
Comes unstuck if you can find a tagger who is strong in both midfield and defence … like Blicavs.
Great learning experience for our players and coaches. Better to learn it now than in six weeks time.

well someone else needs to step up when cripps is tagged heavily like has was against cats.

who is going to do that?

kennedy is a bit of a bull but he lacks burst speed to get the ball out of the middle. he is good at locking the ball in during scimmages but is not the type to burst away with ball in hand like a petracca for example.

hewett is too robotic and lacks creativity when moving forward. better suited to defensive mid role. his kicks too often are up and unders rather than a direct pass to someone on the lead.

walsh doesnt have the strength yet.

cerra is probably our best bet to try something with to get some mid clearances.

It may all come down to having a good ruckman that they can work together with in executing some sort of plan to change things up when the usual approach doesnt work.

Will be interesting to see if Pitto's return results in an immediate spike in our clearance work.

His taps to advantage ratio is really high and his bash and crash style helps our mids do their thing...he gets more involved than TDK after the tap with tackles and blocks etc. Then TDK can jump all over the opposition's tiring rucks as the support ruck.

He was tagged well but he's drastically out of form and/or injured.

His games now are a fraction of what he was producing at the start of the year. He's gone from clear cut best player in the comp to an ok midfielder. We don't need him to be the best like he was for the first few rounds, but it's clear we certainly need him firing.

Said it a few times already but I'd be shocked if he's not carrying something similar to 2021. He's just not moving right.

Not sure why we don't 'manage' him if that were the case...unless it's one of those injuries where a week or two off wouldn't necessarily help.

Geelong would have been a decent time to do it, in the fact that we were always unlikely to win anyway.

SOS said last year on trade radio. The idea of pushing Charlie up the ground sound good but right through his football even in junior years he gets lost up the ground. "keep him close to goal and you will get the most from him"

I think the idea of trying to turn the current leader in the Coleman and an absolute freak of a key forward who can win games off his own boot (probably the hardest type of player to find and get onto your list) into a midfielder, is honestly one of the worst I've heard.

Yeah for sure.

I’d love to play cats again with pitto. Hopefully in finals...although not looking likely...can’t see us finishing 4th.

How could we stop it though? Blicavs instructions were "go where ever Cripps goes, middle, fwd, back, wing, ruck, bench, toilet". He did this to perfection. If we sent a player in to try and break that tag (ie create a 2 on 1), they have a player free somewhere not he ground. I was up to Cripps to use every trick in his bag to overcome it, he couldn't. What the other mids didn't do is lift a couple of notches each to carry the extra grunt load.
Cripps had 17 and a goal at 3/4 time. On track for a decent game considering the hard tag. NFI what happened in the last (1 touch).

Question: which mid was pissing the coaching box off sufficiently that the little observed fact that Doc went on ball occurred? Or was there an injury?

I’ll give you a hint. Go to the 17 minute mark of the last quarter. You’ll all recall Saad kicking into the man on the mark. You’ll recall Young double dusting that which he should have marked.

You may recall Selwood running in to an open goal all alone.

You won’t recall Cerra running from behind 3 other Blues mids, running past all of them by a mile but not quite getting to Selwood (remember this the next time you bag him please).

So which mid pissed the coach off so much he soon after three Doc on ball to improve the defensive running? And what will he do about it from here? I mean it’s not like Selwood is ****ing Matthew Cottrell for gods sake. He started within striking distance of three of our kids and burnt them without even trying.

Maybe a little harsh, but I think you are Fishing here…

Gees the team that won on the night, ran the player who is currently second in the Coleman through the middle.
Some times we have to not be an Ostrich with it's head in the sand, you force counteraction the result generally ends favourably,

That was a critical point in the game. CC and H had just kicked points. Saad takes a great intercept mark, plays on has the Cats totally out of position and we have 4 options inside 50 ( our defensive step up was guarding the centre of I50 with Mots was an extra and the cats had an extra inside the centre square) plus we had a wing goal side of his opponent at the edge of the square. Should have been a guaranteed shot at goal 25-30 out in the corridor. Unfortunately Saad kicked it off the outside of his boot low because he doesn't have a right foot. When it was intercepted (not by the man on the mark) we where horribly out of position. Our 3 mids had all started to push forward and were now 5-10m from their opponents and we had a 4 on 6 behind Saad, plus Young 1on 1 in the forward 50.

Ball was past to Danger, who was the player chasing Saad, he burns his teammates and butchers the ball kicking what should have been an chestmark for Young. Stanley was the Cats player who gut runs and put 20m on TDK for the ground ball get, Youngs tackle allows the ball to remain in play, as does Doc tackle on Hawkins.

I don't think defensive running was really the problem here. Just a horrible turnover that is very hard to defend.

Edit - To make matters worse the idiots in front of me decided to leave right after Saad takes the mark. Next bit of play I see is Selwood handballing to Myers in the square.

Cameron is very much a cameo player in the midfield, as shown by 75% of his disposals being in the fwd half on Saturday. Charlie injury history would terrify me if we chucked him in the guts. Also the two players have completely different body types/play styles.

Next Centre bounce - 9,18,29 Clearance goal to Cats
One after that 7,9,18 Clearance TDK
One after that 5,18,29 clearance Guthrie
DOC came in for the last bounce with 1minute left - Most likely just an error in rotation. Note Geelong had 7 defenders 5 seconds before the bounce and 1 just made it to the corner of the square. Cots was by himself on the wing. Very much doubt it was tactical that that stage. If so it didn't work as we lost the clearance and they very nearly scored a goal.
