Roast Tyson Stengle sacked after ****ing up again

Willie Riolli was forced out of the game for two yrs and basically forgotten about over a bit of dope..

Bailey (insta famous) Smith posts a video of himself showing off with a bag of coke and takes a couple of weeks off while the media kiss his ass then carry on like he's a hard done by puppy when he returns.

Stengle definitely made it hard for himself but every player should be treated exactly the same when inevitably these sorts of things happen.

Didn’t Willie fake his drug test?

I agree each one reasonably minor.

But three in one year?

As I said, no other player has had that many public indiscretions in such a short period and survived.

It is a PR/image driven business and you act up too many times, out.

Anyway, happy he fixed it. Not happy he won't be an AA with us, but do believe coming so close to losing his career (well he did) was the kick in the butt he needed.

Way too talented to piss it away.

If they just sacked him after the three "indiscretions", you'd have a point.

They didn't though, they decided that public humiliation would be the route they would go down by giving him a year-long suspension in the magoos.

What happened wasn't a "kick in the arse for him" it was public humiliation from his employer, that is what spurred him on to where he is now.

Rioli got caught with it in his system on game day, as it’s counted as a performance enhancing substance ASADA suspended him.

Had it not been on game day it would’ve just been one strike and no one would know a thing about it.

Not sure what else they could have done. That suspension is probably a better result than outright sacking for him. He chose to cut ties with us. Asking to be eligible for the mini draft, where no club took him.

We don't know what internal supports he had, but I doubt he would have been cast adrift. And he did move in with Tex.

Looking at his game stats with us he did get dropped after some good performances. Maybe there were other incidents we don't know about?

I can't see how anyone can be upset at the club as we don't have all the internal information.

The suspension/sacking was most likely the last resort.

Given we are about to offload a lot of draft capital and salary to entice Rankine, I doubt the club didnt try everything to keep Stengle. Got to remember we lured him home in the first place, Richmond wanted to keep him. So very much a wanted player for us.

Whether the decision was right or wrong, I think he just chose the wrong time to do it and the club felt it had to be seen to moving in this ultra positive direction. Had he done it in 2017 or 2016 we may have absorbed it.

Its unfortunate as he showed plenty of good things in the games he played.

Chose the wrong time to do what exactly??

His sacking from the Crows was the kick up the arse he needed. To his credit, he got fit, committed to the Eagles and played well enough to get picked by Geelong. He's continued to be professional and committed and is playing outstanding footy in a very good team. Good on him. Move on. He wasn't anywhere near the player he is today when playing at the Crows.

Sorry for the intrusion but I think this is spot on. My club has been the beneficiary of this in picking up a young, AA quality player for nothing. But I don't think we've magically gotten him to focus on football and seemingly find a nice healthy life away from it. I think Stengle would have done the same at any other club that picked him up, because his sacking was a wake up call that he wasn't entitled to an AFL career despite his talent.

Thank Eddie

What evidence is there that anything (at all) has changed?

This whole redemption/turnaround narrative makes assumptions that have no known factual basis

No the time with Crouch and the picture were the only time he did drugs and since there's been no more pictures he clearly stopped. Obvious.

Of course! Doh!

And he was so contrite, knew he did wrong, saw the error of his ways, and knew that he was marked as “do not touch” around the league - that’s why he accepted our offer to earn back his list spot, and in no way gave us the finger to try his luck elsewhere

No sirree!

Bollocks Geoff.

Absolute Bollocks.

He *ed up drink driving an unregistered car. Yep, thats a definite * up and he rightly got punished in the court of law for it.

He then got caught with a bit of coke. So *ing what.

His third indiscretion was him sitting at a party in front of a plate with a white substance on it.. what was that substance?was it his?.. was he charged by the police?..

Total an utter joke to be getting up him for that last one..

It is all about the optics with the club..

Meanwhile this same s**t occurs, and even worse, at other clubs and they rally around the player and tell the media to back the fk off.

Now Geelong has an AA small forward.
Sorry mate but Geoff's post was as accurate as I have read. Tyson had far too many incidents for the club to continue [far more than reported on] giving him chances and was taking AFL as a given - off season he would return home to the west coast and run amok and would return no where near good nick, don't forget also Richmond gave him away for a bag of chips.

Tyson was living in a share house in Adelaide and could see the writing on the wall and with some help from mates completely pulled his digit out as he knew he had one last chance. He looks fitter than he ever has, another indication he is finally taking his football at 100%.

Good luck to him I hope he continues to play well and not fall back into thinking it would come easy.

JFC.. “a drug addiction”… really?..

having a few channel nine’s on the weekend at a party or somewhere else out on the piss is not a *ing drug addiction..
Would you prefer “a drug habit inclination”?

The point being, to change a habit, one needs a change of mindset. All the support in the world would count for little if the mind does not wish to change at all.

In the case of Stengle, no doubt he’s had a reset in his leisure habits and now he’s reaping the rewards of a much more consistent year. Probably helps also since he’s playing in a team that’s giving him good midfield service.

Regarding this particular issue of the club letting Stengle go, I think it’s important to take note of our rebuilding plans and that the current team has a lot of youngsters. Ones that can be more influenced by others in the drug taking scene.

Do we keep a guy who’s made 3 indiscretions in a year, to show that we’re a forgiving club and we support players going off track?

Or do we let him go, and make a statement that we want the team/kids to focus on their footy instead of their nasal passages?

Not really a simple answer no matter which direction. Personally, I was disappointed that Stengle was let go as he was looking very promising during the games that I saw him in. However, the club has every right to let him go, and aim for a clean slate in a young rebuild side.

Fact is what Stengel supposedly did wasn’t all that much anyway

We shat the bed
Had enough minor things that it wasn't worth the hassle given the output we got from him at the time - honestly didn't think we were losing much. Had it been for a star player I'm sure we'd have persisted.

Hats off to him for his season to date.

This is another one of those "I think the club is corrupt and incompetent! But only in the sense of giving off bad vibes! In any specific demonstrable actions they've done I support the club 100% no matter how demonstrably idiotic or counterproductive time has proven them to be!" things I see.

Willie Rioli decision was taken out of AFL hands because it was WADA indiscretions. Why would you bring him up? Totally irrelevant.

Were Bailey and Stengle tested ?
The mistake Riolli made was not filming himself while chugging down on a bucket bong and then posting it on his socials..
School boy error that one 🙃

Not sure if they were tested, it's random and I expect we only find out about failed tests under WADA code and supposedly third strikes under AFL illicit policy. How about the below with Willie? Does that count as being photographed over a bucket bong?
