Analysis Why are we s**t?

We are shit because we don’t have enough good players, who are supported by a good coaching group who have a good medical/fitness group who are supported by a great administration and a great board.

My biggest worry is how we go about breaking the hold the coteries have over club operations.
Seriously, people are buying way too much into the media hyperbole crap. Every side has to deal with powerful rich coterie groups. Don't be fooled that Essendon is the only one. The only reason its been a recent focus is due to the past week.

I have been extremely hard on Essendon, Truck and our performances this year, but I feel things can be turned around quickly with the right coach. Our football department has the same politics as every other and the main reason Essendon were crap this year was due to the atrocious coaching, lack of accountability and injuries (but mainly the coaching).

Look at Collingwood. They were an absolutely basket-case last year. Reported toxic culture and several senior figures leaving...but look at them now, 4th on the ladder!

A good coach with capable players and some luck can turn things around very, very quickly!

It's one thing to have wealthy supporter groups, but I don't think any other club lets them have the degree of influence ours do. Carlton did but they seemed to be able to shake them loose; we couldn't even do that after the biggest ****up in VFL/AFL history. It's a problem.

Thats B.S. The only reason you're not hearing more about Carltons is because they are (were) winning. As soon as things start to turn, watch every clubs coteries start to flex their muscles. Pretty sure Carltons were heavily behind Teagues sacking...thats less than 12 months ago.

Coteries are part of how the whole damn thing works and there is inherently a greater degree of difficulty the more powerful they are (by extension, that means the club is more powerful)

What is a problem, seemingly still even though it was the crux of The Saga, is that the club appears not to have a legitimate heirarchy of authority, i.e. if the list manager has an issue with the coach and the Head of Football, it's them that go even though to a layman like me you would think that those people would be senior and should be able to do something about said list manager.

Every club's transition into the professional era of this sport was difficult, but for us I think the major part of the problem is that we had a continuous regime since the early 80s, where a substantial part of the club's machinery was dominated by one of the most unique and singular people in the history of the game. Sheedy's grasp and influence extended far beyond the typical conception of that of a senior coach, and in any organisation if you lose someone who coloured outside the lines of their job description it's difficult to adjust and replace.

But so many people at he club look at things in a binary and simplistic fashion -- the only thing that talks to them is football results and this year is a great example of this where they were unable to act when we were winning games and then decided to lurch into action when there was an undeniably disgraceful loss. It seems to me that there are those in the club that think that it is somehow a special, superior club that doesn't need to be set up like other clubs because it has a magic destiny that is theirs by divine right, and the proof is how it used to be done.

The EFC is a bubble, a hermit kingdom that is in denial that the industry has changed it hasn't. The good news is, it's fixable. The bad news is that it would seem, and I hope I'm wrong, that the nostalgia bloc/Sheeds rump state still controls the joint and holds sway, and as long as that persists, and the idea that our next premiership needs some sort of continuity with the previous one to be legitimate, to quote Chisel, we're going nowhere and we're in a hurry.

Have watched a fair bit of VFL football, even dabbled in the journalism space and had contact first hand with Skipworth.

Was the least inspiring coach we’ve employed. Genuine no tone when talking

Yet he is doing well at the Pies.
Maybe you need to look at your own opinions and assess that.
Players always liked him.

Pies have 10 players who played in a GF still in their side. We have the side that finishes eighth every second year and crashes out. Apples and oranges.

16.25-35
Paraphrasing Dodo: enjoy seeing kids leave here with 3-4 houses

Look I am happy they are leaving here financially secure (we don’t want them leaving broke like they did 30 years ago) but maybe it gives us an insight into the messages from management at the EFC. We don’t have a “hate to lose” attitude.

Jeanne Pratt left the board at the end of 2021. Pretty much ejecting one of the most powerful financial backers at CFC from a position of influence.

Simple answer is our shit is like a multi layered onion of shit. This club has lost its identity. This is the crux of our problems.
We were never a happy team at our best we had a hard edge not easy to play against. We went corporate (insert saga). Worsfold was the wrong coach for us in the sense that he put it in the players hands when they weren’t capable. All of a sudden we are the nice guys you want to introduce to your mothers.
We can’t the get culture right until we get our identity right. If we can fix our identity the culture will follow. I don’t think Heppell is a bad leader but he’s a good cop without a bad cop and we suffer because of it.

I say to to all the quitters and I know some say it in jest but I actually love this club more than I love the game of AFL football. Whatever successes or tragic losses that this club is a part of me that I’m board.
I’ve come to far now and I feel sorry for people who don’t have the appreciation of this club that I do. I just pray that we can turn this around and have something to be proud of once again.

We are shite because
our players are not ruthless competitors consistently. I believe there is still a culture of discontent since wada
we do not have any strong leaders. There are good blokes but no leaders
our player development has been diabolical. ridley has gone backwards, perkins, Reid and Cox show glimpses but that is all, Hobbs not played in dead games, McGrath has not improved and is a b grader at best bryan no forward craft
sheedy, dodoro and Harvey have too much influence and need to go. Sheeds derailed any chance we had to get Clarkson, Harvey is not owed a damn thing in 2023 and dodoro has never been a key component of a successful footy club though he has held a position of power for over 15 years
we have a shit vfl program
we have dropped the ball with our indigenous programs
we have not retained players we should have
we made a coaching appointment without any due process
we had the chance and did not draft Joel Selwood
a ceo who made many bad appointments
a supporter base that lacks genuine passion- great at whingeing not great at supporting- collingwood have us beat
we have an arrogance that is unfounded our success was last century
we lack any capture the imagination type players- tippa was one - Draper maybe however we have none that young people can truly embrace- collingwood have the Caicos brother, ginnivan, quay or and Elliot who all play with flair
our team selection has been rubbish- Martin Gleeson selected in a final then delisted, Hobbs treated questionably, players played who were clearly out of form or past their used by date.
ineffectual and passive club presidents

we need to get the coaching and ceo appointments right
we need to dump dodoro and harvey
we need to nail this draft
we need to set up a strong indigenous program
we need to play a hard nosed, attacking game of football that is based on accountability, effort and hard running
we need to move on from the period of 1900 to 2000 that was last century and means not a damn thing now

Would almost say we lost what 'made us great', instead drinking our own bathwater and not developing with the times.

we Are the perfect model of a franchise in decline
in a civil action John Travolta’s character states that you should never ask a question you do not know the answer to as a lawyer
i fear We have burned the coaching appointment process already and will be in an ongoing cycle of despair
collingwood is clearly the premier club in the competition and it will only be a matter of time before they surpass carlton and essendon in premierships

I'd suggest we didn't actually lose our identity, and instead tried to keep going with the old one (big club, Sheeds, throw money at problems to make them go away) in an age where that shit no longer worked.

Youve basically nailed everything here bro - I take exception at the less than passionate supporter base however (we are great at whinging) but you cant deny our passion!

Maybe we all have Stockholm Syndrome. We've just been drawn into feeling an attachment to the club because it's been such a shitty experience.

Either that or we're all masochists.

Hopefully the Davey twins rectify this a little. We used to be the leader in this area. Now it is almost embarrassing we are involved in Dreamtime at all.

Tigers killing us with their recruiting/program.

Hard to compare with Collingwood who've won Premierships and played in multiple GF's since we last won a final. Our supporter base keeps on keeping on despite it being a pretty shitty period in the clubs history.

That we're apathetic right now is more a sign of how poorly the club has performed on-field and how out of touch the fan engagement is than it is our supporter base not being passionate.

2016 was one of my most enjoyable years watching football, the EFC supporters turned up each and every week to cheer on a bunch of underdogs that played with passion and effort. Not many clubs would have come through that period as strong as Essendon did, and it was all off the back of the strength of the supporters and their love for the club.

Fun fact,

North and Wet Toasts 2022 was worse than Essendon’s 2016
