I think we spent a first round pick on McHenry because our recruiters knee jerk reacted to players like Castagna winning a premiership against us

Kind of like how we signed Sam Gibson because he tagged Sloane that one time and then Sloane got tagged in the GF too and we wanted to make sure the best tagger in the league at the time wasn't going to repeat that again on Sloane.

or this

Selection No.13 – Jordan Gallucci
Hamish Ogilvie says: "I think they made a decision to play volleyball because it was going to help his footy. He's also trained in a martial art."

This can't be real.

Oh shit. I Googled it. It is real!

To be fair, the worst player in the league could put an effective tag on Sloane.

The eternal pre-season challenge for AFL players lies in the ‘hybrid build’.
How can you get strong and explosive while simultaneously building your aerobic engine?

As former club fitness boss David Buttifant explains, it’s the question that earns high-performance chiefs their dough.

Too much endurance work could compromise a player’s power, but beefing up only to fail to run out four quarters would be equally damaging, he says.

He says the key lies in understanding what type of player the club is trying to develop.

You could say, ‘We’re prepared to compromise his 2km time trial because we want him to have those explosive characteristics – change position, have strength’.

“You can drop five kilos to run a sub six-minute 2km, but you compromise your speed and ability to push off your opponent.”

Running

The Crows are again preparing under the renowned Darren Burgess and opted for a 4x1km time trial for first-to-fourth years, with running beast Chayce Jones winning it ahead of big man Riley Thilthorpe. Lachie Sholl, Brodie Smith and Wayne Milera have also looked strong.

Burgo' said that a bunch, how with players like Fog and Pedlar it's more about explosiveness rather than massive running capacity. Filthy has said he's been focusing more on explosiveness rather than his already elite endurance too.

Was it Soligo he said something like “he is good at football” Given how Soligo is shaping, maybe more of that focus
He could be onto something there.

Kind of like how we signed Bret Turner because he kicked 6 goals against our SANFL side that one time

Like when we signed Daniel Schell after he played his one good game for Freo against us.

Still he had an excellent career for Centrals in the SANFL. :)

We have an obsession with drafting players from other sporting backgrounds who are good at football but might have some sort of undiscovered upside.

What about instead we draft great footballers and make them even better?

It helps explain why Gooch was so lost out there, thought he was on a volleyball court.

Jordan Gallucci showed enough at Junior level football and NAB League level to be one of the selected few to be given an AFL Academy spot, these guys are assessed from a long way out to potentially be upper level AFL footballers...

I guess they just got that one wrong.

Like really, really wrong.

He's decent and better than what we drafted but I don't think he's AA quality.

You've also got Thomas - NFI what's happened to him. Not sure he wants to play AFL.
Caldwell - slightly underwhelming and injury prone
Hately - fringe player
Stocker - delisted
RCD - delisted
E.Smith - delisted
Sparrow - slight upgrade on McHenry
Valente - delisted
Vandermeer - fringe player
Bit harsh on Sparrow.

The challenge is that all young players are assessed in a junior football ecosystem.

The massive variable is how will highly rated juniors adapt and apply themselves in a senior full time professional environment. it’s very difficult to assess and forecast this element IMO

My memory might be fading, but seem to remember Richard Tambling playing a rare very good game for Richmond against up on the Gold Coast. About 15 months later we traded for him for the Nathan Bock compo pick. One of our dud trades.

i honestly wouldn't have thought anyone wouldn't understand the trade off between power and endurance.
