Standard of Umpiring - Suggestions for change

Wowee, I think this is the most rubbish I’ve ever read on this forum and that’s saying something.

People believe what they want to believe and will find what in their mind is evidence, no matter how ridiculous or flimsy.

FACT- mistakes will be made, it’s an incredibly difficult game to umpire.

If anyone thinks we are hard done by look at the free kick for and against ladder over the last 5 years. We are well in front.

The woe me attitude is nauseating. We are so fortunate as a club yet people still piss and moan. We get a great fixture every year loaded with blockbusters. We get great prime time viewing games. We are a desirable club to play for.

The notion that we are hard done by would be laughable by any unbiased person and could only be held by those with such strong rose coloured glasses that the couldn’t see the forest through the trees.

In isolated incidents not everything will go our way, that’s life! But on balance and in all areas of the game I think we are pretty fortunate to be following the might magpies.

To be fair 76 it's match fixing plain and simple.

Geez the must really want us to win considering we are number 1 in free kick differential over the last 10 years.

Makes a mockery of the league is against us theory!

Now que the examples of isolated incidents against us…..

Easier to handle if you decide it’s ok to laugh at the crazy people.

Not sure that there's a weaker poster on this board than jonbe.

He's happy to make those unhinged assertions and then scurry away like a rat when challenged.

Or he deploys the laughing emoji to 'ridicule' the sensible posts he can't reasonably respond to.

Or he simply puts posters on ignore for having the temerity to contradict him.

It's alright Big Jon, no one's going to burst your bubble. There there.

Rats aren't weak. Tenacious, resilient and can survive and thrive anywhere.

Your post encouraging Ginni to be our ruckman was very bad

But I do enjoy your posts about Soviet agronomy

I'm going to stand by my Ginni plan, and the fact that no rational person would actually initiate that plan gives me the confidence to assert that it is a winner.

Soviet agronomy, eh? One out of two ain't bad.

You know that I appreciate the feedback and aim to please.

Thread Relevance: I think that the standard of umpiring is generally okay.

Are you claiming the ball was definitely in play when Harmes pulled off that party trick?

That happened so fast it would have been easy for the umpire to miss it.
I'm yet to see a slo mo of the incident but that ball was out.

Absolutely its not enough.

Take a Brett Rosebury, senior operations accountant at Ticketmaster according to Wiki with a second income from umpiring. He is getting Grand Finals etc so must be in on your scheme. If this existed you think Brett is going to put his reputation and his long term profession on the line because someone like the head of umpires says unless you get involved with our match fixing forget finals and you may get a trip back to the country leagues. You cannot believe that, at least I hope you dont.

Not sure anyone is triggered just incredulous that some may believe such far fetched stories.
Wow, ok. You’ve no doubt missed all of the tens if not hundreds of thousands of police, DEA agents, government officials, soccer referees, college enrolment officials and FIFA delegates around the globe and just in our lifetime that have lost their jobs, had their reputations ruined for life, and gone to jail for corruption. Nothing even remotely like that could happen here though right….

And you’re still failing to see that it’s not all or nothing. Having bias dressed up as ‘what’s good for the game’ is still compromising the integrity of the game, and by definition, corrupt. Doesn’t have to involve people being strapped down with guns to their heads, like you’re insinuating. League HQ have controlled and manipulated so many parts to our game that all / most involved have likely just become desensitised to what’s actually going on. And it is a privileged life.

If you talk to industry people about umpiring, they will tell you - and have told me - the same thing. “Of course they help x team from time to time. It’s seen as important for optics, but if you’re good enough, you’ll still win, so we all accept it is as part of the game”.

No-one will talk about it in a public forum though, except someone like Grant Thomas, as it does actually question the fabric of the game. Ever hear from him anymore though……..

Am guessing your knowledge of DEA operations south of the border is excellent. Because you sound loco.

If you want a great example of why umpiring is so Frustrating….
Then look no further than yesterday.

Josh takes a mark in D50. Moves off the line heading back from the mark….play on called within 1 second.
All good with that.

2 mins later. Saints player takes the mark 15m out, pauses….and plays on. Ump calls it back and gives him a shot.
Why? What is the reason for calling it back and giving him a shot?

There is no game in the world where the rules of the game are applied differently depending on where on the field you are!

And Dwayne rocks out “spirit of the game” rubbish.
Um….no….it needs to be black and white. Spirit of the game just creates grey and is the worst enemy of consistency.

Get rid of the 50-metre penalties for a start. Totally disproportionate effects on the game for often minor and disputable infractions. Frustrating and annoying for everyone. Go back to 15, maybe 20.
Then get rid of the “raised arms is dissent” rule.
Yes, I’m addressing rule changes rather than umpiring per se, but these stupid rules make umpiring hard and turn everyone against them.

And get rid of "deliberate" OOB, the sub and finally the line across the centre circle.
