This isn’t the time to ask, certainly not make public statements about it.

There needs to be a club focus on the tough decisions that clearly need to be made over the next 3-4 months.

Gavin Bell will be out of a job at the end of the year if we have another 2 win season with him as footy manager - he should be focusing on bailing the water out of the 2023 boat and not ending up managing the footy program at some private school.
Doubtful.

It's very unlike WCE to show people the door from the simplistic view of wins vs losses.

They'll have a completely different set of criteria to base their performance KPIs on.

The club probably won't give 2 shits, from a management perspective, if we win 1, 2, 3 or 10 games. It's great to win but it's far more important to get processes in place, behind the scenes, to set the club up for sustained success long term.

Throwing a bandaid solution over it to scrape a few wins together, simply to please the masses, is what makes clubs tread water in the middle of the ladder for years on end.

I'd rather take the pain for a few seasons before having a genuine shot at it, instead of selling false hope.

Had there been any reports of what other states submitted? (if they did at all)

I think when the concept was first raised the prevailing view was that it would go to Sydney under the guise of growing the game

That was until the SA premier chased it hard and threw money at the AFL to get it. In fairness to him I don’t think the other states saw the same opportunity and didn’t pursue it. Certainly McGowan didn’t, politics aside he’s not the most imaginative person when it comes to promoting the state, particularly when sports is involved

So as much as I’m pissed that the AFL has given it to SA for three more years without trialling it anywhere else, it has to be said the SA premier had the vision for what it could be and busted his arse to make it work. You only had to see him popping up every over the weekend promoting the **** out of it

He laid the groundwork and got the reward

McGowan might not even be aware it happened

One SA showed initiative the other SA didn't!

You don't reckon the AFL shopped it around for the most coin? They never leave money on the table.
It’s almost inconceivable that WA would get the Gather Round. From the decision makers here (Melb) it is just too far away. It is considered a very big journey. (But not for WA teams of course.) And it would be for everyone even for those from SA. The money on the table would have to be enormous. (Or maybe in 20 years after it’s gone to NSW, Qld, Tas.)

Imagine the uproar had we got it and the airlines tried fleecing people trying to buy tickets from the east to Perth that weekend 🤣
That would honestly have to be a very real consideration.

If you're coming from Melbourne to Adelaide for a long weekend with the family it's very drivable, especially if you want to make some stops on the way. Perth, not so much.

Fair enough. You usually talk sense.

I’m probably just going through ‘anger’ before I move into ‘acceptance’ (at times!).

😉

This is why we're probably never going to host it. It's easier for people in the East to drive to Adelaide or wherever else than it is to transport tens of thousands of fans across country. And fair enough, too.

Good point. I remember in 2015 there was a good chance that Eagles would vs Freo in a GF (they finished 1st and us 2nd) and I heard a travel agent on the radio saying they didn't have enough aircraft to fly 40K fans over to the game in the space of a few days, while still servicing the other common routes around the country. Gather round might not even be feasible in Perth.

I don't mind this being SA marquee fixture. Rather than try and take it, I'd like the AFL to give us something decent. Opening game of the season? Good Friday? ANZAC day? There's plenty of options.

I know for a fact that it was Malinauskas who wanted two things in SA and basically demanded everyone in government make them happen - Gather Round and LIV Golf.

Guess where the golf is this weekend.

Maybe WA has enough natural wealth not to bother with state promotion, but here in SA it's been a massive focus since the change of state government.

I mean, would be great if we could read it...

Seem to remember for earlier GFs the opposite fare (Melb-Perth-Melb) was ridiculously cheap. Great for a lightning visit to friends and rellies.

He wrote an article about Simon Garlick leaving to take a job at the AFL. Freo then put out a press release saying Garlick wasn’t in the running for a job at the AFL and any proper journo would have contacted the club to confirm before running the story.

Not footy related but the clickbait from media in general is a disgrace

The article is in relation to a meningitis death, but it's deliberately deceptive to attract the conspiracy theorists.
