I wouldn't call the 2.1, 7 marks and 6 score involvements in the prelim a "shut down" or a non-issue. Granted he's probably lost a bit more this year, he usually finds a bit extra against us, as do most players out of form (e.g. Daniher). He's a danger.
The wonder days roll on. What a beauty. Enough has been written about our team, it's belief, the decisions. I'll just say: that was glorious, again!
The Soulless Swans: In Debt to the Devil
Sunday we hit up a struggling Sydney, who are a battling, mid-table side. They're depleted like us, but they just don't have the intestinal fortitude of the Might Magpies. Missing P McCartin, Rampe, hurts their backline. Why Franklin played on this year is beyond me. Or why they let him play on, to be truthful. He makes their team worse. I guess he is the rock star they have needed in the facile, soulless, commercial, tasteless, garish, gaudy, and ultimately superficial Sydney market. Yes, whatever soul Sydney have, it comes from their old South Melbourne supporters. Otherwise, it's best to think of them as Dr Faust, who sold his soul to the Devil for money and power. Karma will get them this weekend though. They should buckle up for a right royal reckoning. Debts will be paid. And Dr Faust will be pulled screaming down into the netherworlds for his sins.
What sins you ask? This for starters: Papley pushed Darcy Mooreflat in the back, and this is what it took for them to beat us in last year's Prelim. It was as bad as the Maynard block in 2018, the Harmes out-of-bounds in 77 was it? (I'm too young but I've seen the footage). Let's call a spade a spade and just say they didn't deserve to make it to the Grand Final and Geelong showed them why. Anyway, don't expect such heroics from Sydney this week. They have some star-factor, the aforementioned Papley, Heeney, Parker, Blakey, MrCartin. But they are still middle of the road. They ain't ready for us.PLAYERCARDSTART30Darcy Moore

The Mighty Magpie Avengers: Balancing up the Universe
Finally some good news for us this week. Pendlebury should be back. We missed the former Captain's steady head and cool chess-master decision making in Adelaide. Kreuger is a chance, so that gives us options if he's okay. I mean, I'm not sold on anything except the fact he is willing to run headlong into a burning building without anyone even asking him to. But boy does he run. Run Forest, Run! Cox will probably play at some level this week. Do we rush him back in because we need an actual ruckman?
Questions and options. My own take is this:
In: Pendlebury
Out: Markov, who will take the sub position
Kreuger will play if fit and Cox will have one run in the VFL. But it could easily be the other way around.
Quaynor will start on Heeney, Noble on Papley, Murphy on Franklin. There's a question about who will take Blakey, since we'll want to limit his run. He's tall too, so that presents a problem. I'm betting WHE (who deserves a ton of praise for that kick to Sidebottom to win us the Adelaide game). Will has the pace, and a good leap and is disciplined and experienced.
None of this will matter that much because we'll crack them on the inside and shred them on the out. Our system is better, our belief better, we have immense improvement in us (especially the forward line). Only a special performance by their midfield and at least one of their stars will give them a chance. And it's a puncher's chance. We ain't talking skill or technique. We're talking the luck of lashing out blindly.

It's time to pay the Piper Dr Faust. The time is 11.59pm and we're taking you to hell at the stroke of 12! Ding, ding, ding.....
Pies by 38 points in a wave of devastation
79,80,81 lost em all, 77 was the first I remember, remember we we're dominant that year and couldn't grasp the cup, all the way in it in 79........... only for that boundary. That footage is so clear. It enrages me. Did we make the 1980 Gf too?
Thanks Finnishpie. Great write up as usual. I’m on the train travelling from the Central Coast to Sydney and just crossed the magnificent Hawkesbury River on a glorious warm late Autumn day. Yes Sydney (the city) is all of the above (crass, commercial etc etc) but is there more magnificent scenery than the Central Coast or Sydney Harbour? Uplifting for the soul. So much to look forward to on Sunday after only one game in a month at the Cricket Ground and I’m sure the team will relish the opportunity to once again play in front the magnificent Magpie Army. I’m so glad that I’ll be back in Melbourne for the game.

Oh yes, and Richmond beat us by 81 points. Then Carlton beat us again in 1981, by 20 points. Then there was 1970…
There’s no mystery about why many of us hate Carlton; and with those losses, why we’re also a little deranged.
In that case I hope Titch takes him under his wing. An inside wrecking ball in the midfield to take over from him and Adams is just what we need.
Tom Mitchell. Replace the M with a T on his surname.Who is Titch again?
nobody talks about "medium forwards" just "small" and "tall" haha So if you're not over 190cm, you're small it seems lol

They'll be assessing for concussion - it can be delayed. No concussion symptoms and he'll play.that was my sacarstic point, people seem to think they know everything and state it as fact from what they observe or perceive. Murphy is listed as "assess" at this point, that must suggest his nose is perhaps not broken i'm assuming.
I remember her shirt fronting Alan Richardson at training before the 1990 Grand Final to test his shoulder, he still hasn't forgiven herJen putting Coxy through his paces.
Fitness tests really are thorough these days.
my 6 year old self lolI remember her shirt fronting Alan Richardson at training before the 1990 Grand Final to test his shoulder, he still hasn't forgiven her
Is that rhyming slang?I do! Tall flankers I sometimes call them.
And I also think that Ginni, Hill, Elliot, Bianco are similar build/height. Elliot has runs on the board although he looks out of form this year and Hill adds pace around the ground and the forward line.Again, you feel the need to criticise me personally for expressing views that you don’t agree with.
You’re wrong by the way - I really like Ginnivan. He seems a fun character and definitely a clever player. But I’m not blind to his flaws (slow-paced and applies little pressure). And the harsh umpiring crackdown on players deliberately causing high contact has definitely curbed his impact. As evidence, in his first 17 games last year, Ginni kicked 32 goals (1.88 per game). In his 9 games since, he has kicked 11 goals (1.22 per game).
Furthermore, my argument was not that Ginni should be dropped, it was that I don’t believe we will continue to play all of Ginni, Hill, Elliott and McCreery in the same team. And from that premise, I believe Hill, Elliott and McCreery all address greater team needs than Ginni.
Contrary to your assertion, I won’t be cheering for Ginni’s demise (another personal criticism on your part), I simply expect him to be squeezed out on a needs/merit basis.
You are most welcome to disagree and mount as many counter-arguments as you like, for which you will receive no personal criticism from me.

He dresses small.Ginnivan is listed at 1.85 cms (6’ 1”). Is this considered small these days?

Sydney would be great without Sydney in it.Gotta admit, I love the coast, the Harbour, and visiting Sydney.
So, Longmire is considering a more physical approach toward stopping N.Daicos? Time to send Bruzzy over.
F*ck ‘em! We owe them for last year. Especially Papley.

Elliott - 178cm, 83kgWouldn't say similar.
Hill is a twig.
Hill, Elliot and Bianco are all under 6ft whereas Ginni is 6ft1.
Ginni is more of a medium forward, though Elliot plays as one even though he is the shortest of the bunch.
Ginni is almost 20kg heavier than Hill.
It was Howe not Maynard and only about a half. But you're right, Moore destroyed Buddy when Reid got injured and Moore moved to Buddy.Did you note in my post..."When he's gone to him"
Or did you forget Maynard was on him for almost 3 quarters?
