Unless something dramatic happens between now and the end of May, Simpson has quite clearly indicated we are only likely to be using one pick in the MSD due to the Culley injury

The expectation is the other injured players will be available at the back end of the season
It's a fair call IMO, we have plenty of picks in the draft and will also give us a few more months to look at our targeted player's.

Which is stupid.

Getting dads army in for the last 4-5 rounds of the year to perhaps pinch a win to avoid the worst season ever on top of last year's worst season ever, wrecking our draft position in the process whilst also ignoring the MSD as an option to trial another young player for a few months is very closed minded.

Simpson saying how he's not going to rob Cripps of the opportunity to come back and play the last 4 odd games just makes me shake my head.

Jamie Cripps the 31yr old premiership player wants to rob the club of the opportunity to have another pick? I'd have thought he'd want to help the club as much as possible, and if riding the pine is the best way to do it by giving a fresh player a shot for the last 11 games, why wouldn't he? Why wouldn't Simpson?

Likewise Naitanui. Happy to sit there doing HJ'S and Lendi adverts all year whilst he sits in rehabilitation, but God forbid we put him on the inactive list, despite not playing since August 2022.

We're at rock bottom. I'd be looking at all avenues, all options all platforms the AFL has set up to help struggling teams. The MSD is one of those.
Totally bizarre in one sense but also kind of predictable in another. I think what this announcement indicates is that they are looking ahead to the fall out from this season and the sales pitch to members for 2024 and they have decided to go hell for leather trying to pick up an unexpected win or two in the back third of the season via playing the returning veterans so they can give us a re - run of the sales pitch for 2023, i.e. it was all because of injuries, we should ignore how bad everything was before the unexpected wins (if they happen), everything is fine when the band is back together, no need to change anything. That is what it is about. It is trying to get a positive data point or two in the closing stages of the season that they can hype and use as a shield against criticism and calls for change at the end of the year. It just re - inforces my view of the current regime that they will wallow in denial until eventually removed and will never, ever admit to themselves how far we have fallen and how much of a crisis this is.

It is also a total slap in the face for the young players. What is the club hierarchy saying to them with this announcement? That they rate them all so poorly that they are pre - ordaining the selection of older players like Cripps and Ryan et al over younger players for Rounds 17 onwards, two months before we get there, regardless of form or fitness, without them proving fitness and earning selection through the WAFL and despite them not having played or trained for four months prior.

It could also be that they want to get these 'oldies' back on the park to see if they can stand up to it. If they break down yet again, they will have justification for showing them the door.

We picked up four mature-age prospects in the SSP at the start of last year, then delisted them all after a year.

Unless there’s some standout candidate that’s likely to buck that trend, I don’t see there’s a huge point in taking a second-round MSD pick.
Agree - we might just unearth another Nick Martin!!

Might be in the minority, but we shouldn't get a priority pick and neither should anyone else. Screw up your list and it's your job to fix it. If it takes longer because you royally screwed up your list, tough. Things look grim because West Coast took one roll of the dice on older players and injuries to them decimated the list. But we know we are in rebuild mode and we will be able to rebuild fine with the picks we have if we recruit well.

Infuriating.

There are players that could easily announce their retirement now and make way. Any notion of trying to get fit for the back end of the year and preseason/next year is delusional.

We should be taking 2 this MSD. Plenty of 19-22yo to choose from.

I am not excited about the mid season draft for two reasons. The cream is already taken and we need cream not quantity. Secondly and more significantly, My faith in our ability to identify tallent is yet to be fully restored. I am sure we will not dig up another Cox or Priddis.

Or Culley?

Baby steps. If we can turn up an upgrade on our worst 2 players on the list- XON & Foley it's a win.
Give em a year or 2 then do the same thing again

Copied from the d&t board…

Kobe Ryan an absolutely dominant game today for West Adelaide against last year's Premiers Norwood roving to Rucks that got obliterated...28 Disposals, 13 Kicks, 15 handballs, 11 clearances, 12 tackles. How he didn't at least get a rookie spot on an AFL list at last year's draft amazes me.

Snapshot from his draft year last season…

All for the bargain price of bugger all.

Could get either Livingstone or Lance Collard as part of Naitanui Academy after 40 but not both .
Collard's kicking bags of goals sounds a good prospect
Malakai Champion as a bottom ager is also part of the Naitanui Academy doing well .

May need to bank some picks in the second round to get both players ...

NicNat not playing now , our best player off the field though !!

Why would we not be able to get both?

I think the limit is 3 Cat B rookies but if we were to match a bid on Livingstone after pick 40 he’d be a regular listed player not a Cat B

Or do you think both are chances to be drafted before pick 40?

The later both could be gone on form .
I suppose we just take the risk that both won't be available .

Collard has kicked 15 goals in the Colts Competition , leading goalkicker in the competition .

Incorrect. Currently we need quantity also. We actually do need to replace d graders with c graders. Whilst we need quality more, and have to chase that in the ND, we really are no worse of getting 2 younger msd picks in the hope one becomes our next whipping boy premiership player.

We have about 10 players who can’t get on the park, and another 4-5 who have proven they are not up to the level. MSD pick 12 or 18 will be at least equal or possibly better than many of those.
