Having rewatched that segment from last year's on the couch, the part that really jumps out at me (apart from how much I miss Nick Reiwoldt's weekly insights and his chemistry with Browny) is just what has happened with that bottom half of the ladder since that 2022 show:

Collingwood, Yartapuulti, Adelaide, Essendon and even GWS and Gold Coast have a strategy for list management and improvement.
Norf have tried with the Clarkson as unicorn saviour approach.
Hawthorn have backed Mitchell and a list turnover and game plan change.

What have the Toast done?

Incredible it took them to become the worst side in history to get to that point.

About the same as when we lose 2 in a row.
Off the back of reports that West Coast officials have banned players from reading copies of The West! 👀

Maybe they would play better if they did?

Loved it when Sheed was interviewed after the game and said, "That was the youngest WCE team in history out there today". One of them said he was pretty quick to drag up that statistic after a heavy loss, inferring that's all WCE do (come up with lame excuses)

Mark LeCras too.

The West seem to be out for blood.

Tbh he's right. That 2010 side was crap but still had its moments.

Their last time at the bottom was all a bit fortuitous really. They traded Judd out at the peak of his value for a gun forward. And the drugs saga meant they rebuilt almost immediately out of a premiership into a pretty strong draft, with a lot of pretty decent players from 2006 hanging around. They could improve quickly and made the finals the next year, and basically slowly built up the side that won it in 2018.

This time around their old good players have zero trade value and are unlikely to hang around. They're basically going to have to start from scratch. They haven't done this since the 80s. A quick return to finals seems unlikely.

Back then they were the only team in town, and one of the few outside of Victoria in the competition. They had heaps of support, that Freo missed out on.

West Coast's autopsy thread is something else
Animated GIF

I expected to laugh more but it was actually glim reading. Respect to the West Coast fans who watched that debacle, 95% of the Eagles supporters at my work don't even watch their team anymore.

Eagles will splurge some extra cash. They have 10 million to burn.
Also AFL won't want to see them crash and burn being their biggest cash cow.
Afl are attached to those blue and yellow milkers.

They will be looking for PPs etc from the AFL, which wouldn't be fair if it's because of their own blunders, and they have zero fear of collapsing because they have become insolvent

Former top liners who are no good anymore:

Nic Nat
Yeo (Should have a few good year left but at this point who knows)
Shuey
Hurn (huge respect for Hurn - but is old now)
Darling
Gov (has his moments but is not what he was)
Shep hurt them - He would still be a very good player now and was an A grader. Concussion sucks, I hope he is going well. Even then he would be in his last few years at 31.
Gaff - has fallen off a cliff

Older but not old decent players:

Cripps
Sheed
Kelly
Ryan - is unfit and has just done a massive hammy. With his fitness issues in general, weight etc, I hope he doesn't find himself a regular soft tissue concern.

Would they be considered B - B+ level players?

Players who should be built around:

Allen
Barrass
*Ginbey - who knows but looks like he will be at least a B level player which is positive year 1.
*Hewett - see Ginbey.

That is a shite load of list building required. And they have quite a few of the injury prone unfit guys on big $$ deals.

We should be aiming to win the next 10 derbies as a minimum.

Can someone explain the coach payout arrangements that Freo and the eagles have?
I’ve heard it’s different to the other 16 clubs as the licences are owned by WAFC not the afl, and so if either team sacks a coach it needs to be paid out in full?

Every other club in the AFL has a clause limiting the max payout to 6 months. Is this true?

didn't we have to pay out Lyon?

When we fell in a hole in 2016-17 we still had Fyfe at 25, Walters at 26, Neale at 23. Mundy a spritely 31.

They really have nothing comparable. It’s crazy.

The obvious retort is Hawthorn were only one month older.

Is it just me or does Sam Mitchell and Hawthorn just seem completely in control of their situation though?

Everything that is happening is part of the plan. Those they wanted to get better as a result if trading those older players have even if there’s a few good losses. They’ll avoid the bottom six as soon as next year, if not the year after, and won’t look back from there.

100%

West Coast fans are still bitter that LeCras came and did some assistant coaching for us that one year, sad to see them turn on their own like that, but funny nonetheless.
