Toast Crows Board 2023 B&F Voted by YOU - And The Winner Is....

Remove this Banner Ad

Welcome to the 2023 Adelaide Crows Board B&F ceremony! As the season has just finished and you all have been voting on the best players throughout the season, it's time to award a winner.

Each week on average 93 people contributed to the voting, making this the most robust and therefore best B&F system going around. None of this 5 coaches giving votes crap, these are the True Accurate Rankings.

How the Numbers Were Calculated

The question used for B&F polling each week was "Who played well against [opponent]?". People could vote as they see fit. You were allowed to select as many players as you like, but you weren't able to see the existing votes before voting, or change your vote.

Each week a player could score a maximum of 100 votes, determined by the percentage of people who thought that player played well that week. If 80% of people thought the player in question played well, they gain 80 votes.

These votes were divided by the number of games the player played, giving us a votes per game metric as the final deciding factor. This fairly shows who played best this year even if they weren't selected or were injured for parts of the year, rather than letting average players rack up mid-tier vote numbers and climb the ranks.

NEW Last year there were a few question marks about calculating votes per game and how players with low game counts would affect this total. For this season, I've limited the official rankings to any player who played at least half the season, which is 12 out of 23 games or more.

Previous Winners

2022 - Sam Berry (1st), Jordan Dawson (2nd), Jake Soligo (3rd, adj)

THE WINNER - JORDAN DAWSON

0872b40962096db90fd9b62103394bc1

A huge congratulations to club captain Jordan Dawson for taking out the B&F, who was clearly our best player this year and a step above the rest of the pack.

Dawson was a highly consistent, elite midfielder for us this year, averaging 27 disposals, 6.6 score involvements, 3.8 clearances, and 6.7 tackles. He was renowned for his lethal kick and damaging disposal

He was adjudged best on ground 6 times across the season by BigFooty posters, the most of any player by far.

TOP 10 - WORRELL RUNNER UP

1. Jordan Dawson - 65.5 avg votes
2. Josh Worrell - 60.3
3. Chayce Jones - 53.5
4. Max Michalanney - 51.5
5. Rory Laird - 50.3
6. Nick Murray - 49.6
7. Taylor Walker - 49.3
8. Jake Soligo - 48.3
9. Izak Rankine - 47.7
10. Mitch Hinge - 46.9

Dawson finished with a clear lead over Worrell, and a significant lead over Jones. Worrell polled exceptionally well, however he just met the cutoff of 12 games played in the year. Perhaps he should have played more. If you think he didn't play enough games, given the rest of the top 10 all played at least 18 matches, you are welcome to exclude him and elevate the next player, Luke Pedlar, into the top 10

Chayce Jones was rewarded for strong form and a new positional change this year, recording his best ever season until it was cut short due to injury. Hope for a speedy recovery Chayce.

Max Michalanney finishing 4th shows his excellent, consistent debut year was recognized by the posters on this forum. And rounding out the top 5 was Rory Laird, a mainstay of our midfield and a generally consistent player.

BEST OF THE LOW GAME PLAYERS

1693225158571.png

For the players that didn't play enough games to qualify, it's no surprise to see Matt Crouch leading the pack, ahead of Keane and Nankervis. Were these players eligible, they would have finished 3rd, 4th and 7th respectively (hence the game limit). Still, a great vote of confidence in these players.

The Crows Board Best 22 By Voting

If the Crows board were also the selection committee and were selecting based on performance rankings with some eye for positioning, this is what the team would look like

B Josh Worrell - Mark Keane - Max Michalanney
HB Mitch Hinge - Nick Murray - Wayne Milera
C Chayce Jones - Jordan Dawson - Luke Nankervis
HF Izak Rankine - Taylor Walker - Luke Pedlar
F Josh Rachele - Darcy Fogarty - Shane McAdam
R Reilly O'Brien - Matt Crouch - Rory Laird

I Jake Soligo - Tom Doedee - Ben Keays - Lachlan Gollant
S Ned McHenry

Emergencies: Riley Thilthorpe - Lachlan Sholl - Rory Sloane - Harry Schoenberg

Bit of an interesting one, with Thilthorpe not making our best 23, and Gollant making the team instead. It also has the occasionally criticized midfield trio of O'Brien, Dawson, Crouch and Laird all getting starting positions.

Also players that played a significant amount of games in Sloane, Murphy, Smith and Butts not being considered for the side based on how we rated their performance

And Brodie Smith not in our best 27 players.

This says a lot about the collective wisdom of the AFC Bigfooty Board.

Anyone want to bet that he won’t be in our top ten in the B&F?

Not even a troll like for Tyler Brown

That's some outstanding stats-gathering Scorpus above, well done!
This article on Crouch is interesting:

Best of the low-game players above, Crouch is getting the ball as much as he used to, but is using it much more effectively imo.
I've happy to be wrong about a player whom I thought was ineffective and done. Apologies, Matt.

Something must be going on behind the scenes for him not to have been offered a contract, or maybe he has been and is weighing it up. Fox Sports said:
"Crouch was told last year he would not be receiving a new contract with the club, despite having more than 12 months to run on his existing deal". Is that right?

The club votes on whether a player has played his role. Given he was selected for every game you'd think he was playing his role, although at times guys like Mackay have played all season without finishing top 10

The Crows Board B&F uses a higher bar than just playing a role (has the player played "well") and IMO in many instances Smith played his role but didn't play well

I'll take the bet on votes per game basis. But I do think he'll be between 8th and 12th, given the idiotic voting system these days.
Says the man that has stated he has only seen the Crows play live twice since 2016????

You get a different impression of players when you are at the game (not playing golf and watching the replay on the telli).

A higher bar 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄.

Simple question - Do you believe that there were 27 players that contributed more to the success of the Crows this year?
Brodie had a few poor games but more above average games. The Tools and Trolls became bored with sledging Sloane, Tex was fantastic, Crouch was in the Twos so Smithy became the new T&Ts whipping boy.

I think it's less about tools and trolls, of which you're the leader, and more about posters likely voting for up to 5 or 6 players. Posters aren't going through every player and determining whether they've played their role and the degree to which they did. Brodie would have been lucky to be in our best 6 two or three times, if that. So he will poll under the voting system that Nicks brought with him, but he'd not have featured in many best player lists. You have to be able to understand and account for the 2 different methods of rating. Obviously a little above your pay grade.

Are you suggesting the entire board, which voted in the poll, are tools and trolls?
