I think the Bulldogs will want a player or players trade for Smith. Maybe in addition to picks. Could be complex but there is no secret that they are looking for an inside mid due to Liberatore's workload plus a back flanker type which we seem to have an abundance of. If my thinking is correct, then a possible trade has every chance of happening.

Remember literally last offseason (and the one before), where our biggest need was inside midfielders? Worpel and Nash had great seasons, but there is no guarantee they will be as good this year. What we need is top talent, and Bazlenka is one of the most talented players in the competition. How many players do we have who can do what DeGoey, Petracca, or Bontempelli do when the game is on the line? If we are in a position to get Baz in, lets get him in.

Pick 3 (which will be pick 5 or so), should definitely be considered for Bailey Smith.

Whilst most people have clear recency bias with him, he is a great, great player. Just 12 months ago, 95% of people wanted to argue he was the best player from his draft and some even considered him superior to Walsh? (I didn't).

This season he gets played incredibly out of position on a wing/HF by a terrible coach, as well as an interrupted year somewhat.

People also forget the inherent risk that comes with drafting. There is always an inherent risk, no matter who you take. DGB prime example thus far.

Do you really need to overthink it in terms of a 'what if'?

Yes, a Duursma or someone might be a very handy, good player. But Bailey Smith is already that?

I am the only one that sees incredible upside to seeing his speed next to contested beasts such as Worpel, Jai, Nash & Day?

If he has that midfield to rely on, he would be an absolute star in our Team.

I understand a top 5 pick is a steep asking price - but every asking price is steep with contracted players these days.

I would do it.

I can't see a world where we bring in Smith for pick 3 and subsequently lose the opportunity of getting in the likes of a Duursma or Watson.
No way.
Better the devil you know.

Smith is a known gun who can kick goals. Instant improvement in our team.

Any of these kids in the draft might end up being busts. It's less likely every year but is still a chance.

He is known to be a meticulous worker and being at the club he grew up adoring could only be good for his supposed mental health concerns (which I don't but much into either)

Smith moves the needle now.

I'd pay pick 3 (5) for him in a heart beat.

Wouldn't surprise me if they're trying to get Oliver and someone like a CJ/Scrim.
They have 10, 17, 37 and whatever they get for Baz to do it

Could it be 3 for Baz & 17
Then 3, 10 & F1 for Clarry & 5?

Gives Melbourne 3, 10 and 13 to make a move for Reid

Scrim would be the obvious starting point, he fills a need for them and isn't a lock for our 22. I'd hate to lose him like this, but if they asked for Butler I wouldn't be hanging up the phone on them. Apart from that, I can't think of any players that they might want and we'd be happy to give up.

Oliver isn't even the best inside mid at Melbourne, let alone one of the best in the history of the game.
Stats only go back so far but he averages the most disposals, contested possessions, 3rd most clearances and 9 most tackles since those stats have been recorded. All while just having turned 26.

Sure he’s got off field issues but on field he’s a gun.

We do have currency and we do have a history of trading with the Bulldogs. I would not be surprised if they also looked at Worpel but as someone else has posted, they might be looking at a way of landing Oliver through a possible Smith trade.

Oliver is a gun and so is Smith.

Both have had issues that’s been well documented.

We managed one of the biggest profile players for 9 years that was constantly surrounded in off field issues/rumours and he helped us win two flags.

The support network is key. Too easy to say “he is paid heaps so he should just pull his head in” as everyone is different and often the biggest stars in sport have off field issues .

I reckon as a club we are now in a really good space to manage/support someone like Bailey Smith and help him flourish.

100% agree.

Newcombe, Day and Smith can all be genuine A graders. Add to that Worpel, Nash, Ward, McKenzie, Weddle and Amon (which we may have a couple more A graders with our recent draftees). We will have claims to the best midfield in the competition in a couple of years.

You literally said, "Oliver isn't even the best inside mid at Melbourne"

Stats prove he categorically is.

End of discussion.
