Thanks Soap, very good reading as always.

Wilson is a player I see playing games this season. There are some super impressive traits about him. Speed is the main one and the other is that he uses it. Runs from behind the ball, follows up, he kicks then runs hard to get it back and get back in the game. He also loves to carry the ball. His awareness of space is good, he receives handball a lot because he holds his shape really well at contests but when it's his turn to go he goes. All traits we lack in the middle and traits that suit the modern game. He's got a very strong body and he looks one touch as well. Being also able to play defence gives him a different perspective as a mid with that skillset. He's inside and outside with those defensive traits. I can see Wilson coming in and playing a defensive role in the centre for us. Listening to Austin, he really rates him and sees him as a mid with the fall back or second position of a defender. Either way I am super impressed with his style of game and his athletic attributes. If he's in the side round 1 it won't be a huge surprise, IMO he is just the type we need in the middle of the ground. Love seeing him dropping back inside D50 getting the ball and next thing he's in the centre and at half forward. That is the sort of thing we need from our onballers.

I can see Wilson playing opening round and spending time in the middle and in defence. He and Docherty working in tandem would be a really good rotation for us.

Lemmy and Akuei look like players who should have had another couple of seasons of junior footy. They just look like under developed kids playing against men. Sometimes juniors ends too soon for some and they get drafted too early. Does not mean they won't make it as AFL players. Just means you take no notice of their first 3 or 4 seasons. I am expecting nothing from Lemmy this season apart from some very minor improvement. He's clearly a slow burn. Akuei is as well although he may need to show a bit with the options we have coming in next season. Some players are ready at 18 and some are ready at 21. These two are the latter.

I'm still not sure on Mirkov. I think you still need to recruit Athletes from a sport where they are proficient in catching a ball. If he makes it, it's going to be after a long development period. Patience will need to be taken here. When he bulks up he may start influencing marking contests so let's wait and see.

Fantasia fit is something that really adds to our side. The small forward job isn't as easy and straightforward as it used to be. Sometimes you play on a guy who can get 25-35 possessions as a rebounder and take games away from your side (see our prelim game, small forward got torched) so you need the fitness and experience. Knowing how to position and crumb to the forwards. Applying elite pressure. I think he could add a lot.

Elaborating more on what I sad about Fantasia, Moir is probably going to be a slow burn and maybe as he gets fitter will play a few games later in the year. Throw him to the wolves early, you could imagine what a player with the rebounding capabilities of Saad would do to him. Not expecting much early. A fitness based program and some VFL form and we will see. I think he has the talent but I don't think at this stage he would be fit enough for AFL. At least he is training and chipping away at it now.

Not surprised Moir is going slow.

My experience with hip bursitis is that it sucks and you need to slowly build strength up in ancillary muscles to help recovery

Love this feedback.
I have had my doubts regarding Lemmey. Has the capability, but appears to have struggled with focus and commitment, perhaps self belief. The intensity of training should bring this type of player on. Insistence on involvement and a resultant realisation that “I belong”. Love that he is being schooled in ruck craft, rather than just thrown in as a pinch hitter because he is big.

Akuei looks great in training clips from time to time. Shows snippets in the VFL, but has not offered a body of work remotely close to AFL standard. Think he has the ability, but appears a long way off when the ball is bounced in anger. On match day, suspect his AFL journey ends after 2024 season, but does have some great traits which could transform his trajectory.

I watched Wilson in early games and wondered why he did not have the hype of some of his contemporaries. Then one game, he missed more targets than he hit, so conceded he may not have the disposal skills. I remember wondering why he was playing exclusively off half back, as he “looked like a mid”? Finished the season very strongly at CTL level in the midfield and his disposal is being lauded as a strength, so clearly the down game was the exception, not the rule. High hopes for this kid.

Fantasia is one of those oppo blokes you constantly wonder why the hype? Closer scrutiny shows his best is very good and he has some excellent mentoring traits and a desire to assist his mates. I can concede he has a lot more substance than I thought and seemingly has been so determined to prove his ongoing worth, that he has short cut his rehab. We can be certain Russell will offer his best chance to be AFL ready and critically build resilience before taking a “shot in anger”. I am not banking on him, but certainly has the scope to upgrade our forward half.

I am pleased to hear that we are going slow with Ashton Moir. Kid is coming off a down season, but has all the potential under the sun. Reckon a tailored program will be insisted upon, which should have him very hungry by the time the shackles are released. Not expecting to see him pre bye, if at all in the senior side in 2024. Have him primed for immediate impact when the time is right rather than introductory cameos.

Mirkov has shown some dominant glimpses in the twos. His body of work has been lacking. Watched a game from beside the bench at the Gold Coast when we were flogged by the deep list of the home team. Post game posters were critical of his lack of game time and ultimately impact. I watched him prowl the boundary, almost begging to get back on. Certainly no lack of desire. With the development of TDK, it is somewhat difficult to see him pushing in to the top team. There is so much upside there. A heart condition such as his could literally halve output. Let’s judge him on his next season rather than the compromised ones.

Monahan is a clean slate. Physically developed but yet to be seen if he is AFL ready from a resilience perspective. Love that we clearly see him developing forward, rather than the generic intro to the game behind the ball. Seems confident and committed. I am anxious to see what he can bring.

We have gone from only having an injury prone Martin and perhaps Kennedy who was preferred elsewhere as mid sized “hybrid” forward options, to a seemingly healthier Martin, E.Hollands, Moir and Monahan as our prospects. The list is “rounding out” beautifully.

Add Hudson O’Keeffe, who I would love some feedback as to how much forward work he is doing, and the very young rookie Matt Carroll to that group as the only players on the list currently out of place in best 22/23 discussions(obviously Fantasia excluded) and we have a very healthy list and great competition for spots.
There's a lot to digest here Coona, but I reckon you're on the mark.

Billy flew under the radar with the media and analysts, but was rated more highly by recruiters. Won the Stingray's B&F ahead of the likes of Demattia and Simpson (although he had an injury interrupted year), 6th in the Morrish playing mainly at half back, and made the Coates U18 Team of the Year. He didn't have a great U18's champs, but was played a lot out of position in lock down roles against the likes of Watson - which is probably why the 'analysts' didn't rate him as highly as recruiters. Either way, if we hadn't picked him up at #35, Collingwood and/or Richmond were ready to pounce on him. His family were petrified with the prospect of him being picked up by the Pies 😂

Big Lem is a watch and see for mine. I'm glad they gave him another year on top of the initial 2 years to develop his game and assess where he's at - but right now I'm not that convinced by what I've seen so far in the magoo's. Plays a lot smaller than his height, and doesn't have much aggression to his game yet. Needs to put on a few kilo's to give him confidence to attack the ball and crash packs - but as it stands right now, he's a tall guy with nice skills still developing his craft - whatever that looks like.

Mirkov is in a similar boat, although probably only has this year to prove whether he should be retained, when list spots are going to be at a premium. His height and leap - along with some sublime ruckwork at stoppages - makes him a real prospect as a pure ruck. Paddy Dow was just feeding off him the last couple of years. Unfortunately, it's the rest of his game where it all falls down when you compare him to leading ruckmen in the comp. During 2023, I wouldn't have had an issue at all if he was called up to debut in a 'break glass' situation - it would have been great to see if he could have translated that tap work to senior level, with Crippa, Cez, George, Walshy, Doc and co feeding off it.

I'll be interested to also see HO'K's development this year. Still only 18yo as we're sitting here, so was an underage ruckman in 2023. Not the most athletic of ruckmen, but showed some wonderful aggression at VFL level. He looks like he'll be more of a crash and bash style a la Pitto - but had his pants pulled down horribly at times during the year by other taller/developing rucks like Bryan and Moyle and Mitch Edwards. Another watch and see, but at best still at least 2-3 years away from what I've seen so far.

Love the addition of Elijah to our midfield, and can also go forward. Just got a feeling this kid will go the next level in a strong midfield group.

The addition of Billy, Moir, Monahan and M.Carroll to the list will make VFL viewing even more pleasurable - watching their progression as they push for a debut - together with others like J.Carroll, Binnsy, Cow and big Dom. It's a bummer that Duffy went down with that knee, but really looking forward to both the AFL and VFL in 2024!!!

Just some other comments that people don't usually discuss

Lemmey looks very good and is training hard with rucks and forwards. Doing a lot of contested work
Akuei moves well and is involved a lot
Wilson looks very good. Has genuine run and is a lovely ball user
Fantasia is quick. It's obvious
Moir hasn't done a lot and looks a way off at this stage. Skills are impressive
Mirkov is training well and looks good
Monahan is a big unit and looks built for AFL. Seems to be adjusting quite quickly

Everyone looks very fit. No fatties like a few years ago. A few in rehab but nothing major
We now have a lot of players that can really run. Gone are the days of Ed or Cottrell leaving everyone for dead in the running
Training is hard. Lots of running and contested, game style type work.
What I really like is everyone is involved and talks. More than I have ever seen. The tempo is quick and they are pushing each other

It'll be interesting. Dont recall an Irish player ever making it as a forward (not counting Setantas cameos) though like I said hes got some different attributes to other imports.
Setanta played his best football at CHF. Especially with the three amigos at his feet.

Came in today for the old tragics day, training was in full swing outside. Scott Camporeale was there with family. Heath Scotland looked in fine mettle as does his boy Riley. Hoops and Phil Maylin also attended and Phil had some funny tales. Scotto and Hoops look like they could be playing today. Top morning and thanks to the club for organising.

Hewitt had padding on a forearm - must have copped a knock on it, but he was in full training.

The Campo twins were out there, but I didn't pick them.

I wouldn't worry too much about McLovin's concussion. Was doing laps today which he wouldn't be if it was that bad. Also doing laps: 19, 32, 42 and mystery guest 49.

46 and 30 leading the 400s as usual.

Moir looks very sharp. I expect he'll get his chances next year.

I assumed 49 was Mirkov? I think one of the Campos may have been wearing 26 and 36, they teamed up for the first warm up drill.
