I would wager that given they both can be or are wingmen it’s a master apprentice scenario.

I think there is 0% chance Walsh lines up on a wing for us ever again. Maybe when he's 30+ and Ben Camporeale and the Hollands brothers are dominating out of the middle.

Reckon there's a good chance O.Hollands gets some onball action this year.

It'll be interesting. Dont recall an Irish player ever making it as a forward (not counting Setantas cameos) though like I said hes got some different attributes to other imports.

I agree the game would be easier to learn from defence. If he gets lost forward I guess we can always throw him back there. I think Duffy would have started at halfback for sure.
Callum Brown at GWS plays forward.

Anyone got an inside word on who is really impressing this preseason so far? Soapy V you heard anything?

Apart from the usual like Walsh & Cerra it’s been Cowan Ollie Hollands TDK that have been impressive. Hewett looks very fit

What I saw the other day was everyone involved and focussed and looking good.

I’m very impressed with how Williams looks and is running

Thanks Soap. Appreciate your insights 😀

I’m on the Moo train Soapy, dunno where we fit him in but I reckon we’ll have to at some point.
MOOO is the new WOOF/KRUEZZ.
I have spoken.
No further correspondence etc.

Yeah, wasn’t ready last season, but is clearly anointed as the future. Hard to see him displacing Saad, Williams and Newman, although Newy’s role looks to be his future.

If he has taken significant steps forward this off season, it probably has him playing the 7th defender role. He will need to leapfrog some quality players to do so.

We don’t give a youngster #2 lightly. Set to lead a partial changing of the guard (along with Kemp) What time frame that takes will be intriguing.

Pre-season game vs MFC @ IKON
Wednesday, February 28
Carlton v Melbourne, Ikon Park, 6.40pm AEDT

Clarry will still be nursing a new year's hangover by then and won't play i bet.

For such a supremely talented player, he really has become a goose and risk going the way of other potentially all time great players of The game who ruined their careers by off field addiction and issues.

Anyhow looking foward to seeing how our kids and recruits over summer play.

Is Elijah Hollands eligible to play in this despite his home and away suspension?

Yes I believe he is eligible for all preseason game.

Just some other comments that people don't usually discuss

Lemmey looks very good and is training hard with rucks and forwards. Doing a lot of contested work
Akuei moves well and is involved a lot
Wilson looks very good. Has genuine run and is a lovely ball user
Fantasia is quick. It's obvious
Moir hasn't done a lot and looks a way off at this stage. Skills are impressive
Mirkov is training well and looks good
Monahan is a big unit and looks built for AFL. Seems to be adjusting quite quickly

Everyone looks very fit. No fatties like a few years ago. A few in rehab but nothing major
We now have a lot of players that can really run. Gone are the days of Ed or Cottrell leaving everyone for dead in the running
Training is hard. Lots of running and contested, game style type work.
What I really like is everyone is involved and talks. More than I have ever seen. The tempo is quick and they are pushing each other

Love this feedback.
I have had my doubts regarding Lemmey. Has the capability, but appears to have struggled with focus and commitment, perhaps self belief. The intensity of training should bring this type of player on. Insistence on involvement and a resultant realisation that “I belong”. Love that he is being schooled in ruck craft, rather than just thrown in as a pinch hitter because he is big.

Akuei looks great in training clips from time to time. Shows snippets in the VFL, but has not offered a body of work remotely close to AFL standard. Think he has the ability, but appears a long way off when the ball is bounced in anger. On match day, suspect his AFL journey ends after 2024 season, but does have some great traits which could transform his trajectory.

I watched Wilson in early games and wondered why he did not have the hype of some of his contemporaries. Then one game, he missed more targets than he hit, so conceded he may not have the disposal skills. I remember wondering why he was playing exclusively off half back, as he “looked like a mid”? Finished the season very strongly at CTL level in the midfield and his disposal is being lauded as a strength, so clearly the down game was the exception, not the rule. High hopes for this kid.

Fantasia is one of those oppo blokes you constantly wonder why the hype? Closer scrutiny shows his best is very good and he has some excellent mentoring traits and a desire to assist his mates. I can concede he has a lot more substance than I thought and seemingly has been so determined to prove his ongoing worth, that he has short cut his rehab. We can be certain Russell will offer his best chance to be AFL ready and critically build resilience before taking a “shot in anger”. I am not banking on him, but certainly has the scope to upgrade our forward half.

I am pleased to hear that we are going slow with Ashton Moir. Kid is coming off a down season, but has all the potential under the sun. Reckon a tailored program will be insisted upon, which should have him very hungry by the time the shackles are released. Not expecting to see him pre bye, if at all in the senior side in 2024. Have him primed for immediate impact when the time is right rather than introductory cameos.

Mirkov has shown some dominant glimpses in the twos. His body of work has been lacking. Watched a game from beside the bench at the Gold Coast when we were flogged by the deep list of the home team. Post game posters were critical of his lack of game time and ultimately impact. I watched him prowl the boundary, almost begging to get back on. Certainly no lack of desire. With the development of TDK, it is somewhat difficult to see him pushing in to the top team. There is so much upside there. A heart condition such as his could literally halve output. Let’s judge him on his next season rather than the compromised ones.

Monahan is a clean slate. Physically developed but yet to be seen if he is AFL ready from a resilience perspective. Love that we clearly see him developing forward, rather than the generic intro to the game behind the ball. Seems confident and committed. I am anxious to see what he can bring.

We have gone from only having an injury prone Martin and perhaps Kennedy who was preferred elsewhere as mid sized “hybrid” forward options, to a seemingly healthier Martin, E.Hollands, Moir and Monahan as our prospects. The list is “rounding out” beautifully.

Add Hudson O’Keeffe, who I would love some feedback as to how much forward work he is doing, and the very young rookie Matt Carroll to that group as the only players on the list currently out of place in best 22/23 discussions(obviously Fantasia excluded) and we have a very healthy list and great competition for spots.
