I'm not a fan, for exactly those reasons, he's shown elite talent in patches but never strung it together for a full game, let alone multiple games in a row.

I want him to succeed, seems like a decent guy but I think times running out
I can totally see your view re Cuningham. It’s like he is an enigma who has played 2 superstar games against * in his career then really not a lot beyond that.

We all know he has talent but sometimes the afl landscape can be cruel. I liked him being in the team during 2023 playing the 12 games and giving our group another layer front of centre, but he will need to go above and beyond that in 2024 imo to gain another contract. Competition for spots is at a premium like we haven’t seen since 1995 which is amazing and I’m hoping DC can produce what most of us feel he can.

Although the team looks pretty damn good going into 2024, changes will still come at the end of the year (some names to depart will sting this year compared to others) and it may just be decided by the amount of time a players body has held up over the past few years along with “how long can we persist with approx 10 game seasons even though we know the player has talent”.

Some names that will be under the gun imo in some capacity throughout 2024 in no particular order are:

Cuningham
Martin
Fogarty
Durdin
Owies
Jack Carroll
Marchbank

That’s 7 I suspect for one reason or another that will feel the pinch this year. The first 5 play forward of centre also. I’m expecting 2 if not 3 of these to be not on our list in 2025.

It’s a sign we are on the right path that tough calls will need to be made.

It is scary. Add Matt Cottrell to the senior list, and Elijah Hollands on probation, while rookies Boyd and Mirkov by regulation have to be elevated to be retained.

We are compelled to move three players minimum from the main list to meet AFL requirements. So three listed above have to be traded or delisted unless we trade out a “more senior” type. If we choose to retain both Boyd and Mirkov along with drafting the Campo boys, it becomes four required list spots.

Unless we have an early retiree or an established player seeks a trade as the “pecking order” evolves, we must move on three or four from the out of contract list.

Fit Marchbank is a lock as we would expect for Jack Martin. For mine Durdin is “the future”. I theorise a little that the keenness to get Fantasia in suggests Vossy and co. want an upgrade on our more established small forward options. Thinking Cuningham, Fogarty and Owies are more “in the gun”. To me none are/will be deserving of delisting, but the harsh facts are that they may well be. Jack Carroll is another I like a lot, but will need a stellar season to survive the “cull”. He is still very young and has been plagued by multiple niggles since his impressive debut. Being a left footer gives a point of difference, but with Ollie pushing for inside time, brother Elijah strongly entering calculations and impressive youngster Billy Wilson becoming an option to add some zip in the middle, Carroll will have to put in a strong claim. The Camporeale boys will certainly add to the midfield options at season’s end.

I am quite invested in all of the out of contract players, so I am hoping we manage to retain one or two by manipulating them on to the rookie list. That is somewhat perilous as other teams will have rookie selections before us.

For some players it would/could be a blessing to be successfully “relegated” to the rookie list, allowing a three year “safe” tenure, rather than running the gauntlet in rolling one year deals on the main list. That is how tight we are for spots.

Martin??
Marchbank

They’re safe as houses..

The others are under the pump… and that shows the quality of depth we now have in our team

Have to disagree. Ability wise they are but they are injury prone and in their late 20s.

Every year is an important one now for them especially when we have a strong list

Cunners is the one who really needs to pull a big year out of his clacker otherwise he's cactus-stuffus. Spends an awful amount of time injured and when he isn't can't maintain his form for more than a week or two.

Just needs to do more. When he is involved he is dangerous. Looks great. My concern is he doesn’t find the ball enough

just looking at horatio hornblower's highlights - bloke's kicking a goal and a half a game - do your thing russell and unleash him......

if you ain't excited about moir you ain't breathing.........
I dont follow high school football the draft or bother watching even posted highlights of these kids - so pencil me in as 100% ignorant about all draftees until I watch them play - preferably in AFL - but if he has some ability to make something out of nothing - which is thehallmark of all good forwards - I'm excited - add some agro on top nd I even crack a smile

Not sure about the love for S. Durdin. Recruited as a low cost KPD only because Oscar McDonald kept breaking down. 27 year old who has played 26 games at 2 clubs. I see him as more of a "in case of emergency" type, but many on here rate him more highly the less that he plays .

I wish him nothing but the best and hope that he surprises me but I would be terrified if we were to go into a final with him playing on Hawkins or Joe Daniher or similar.
That’s exactly what he is and is exactly what the last two years of selections have shown.

He is a VFL level KPD with experience and height that can come in and do a basic lock down job.

He would be on a fairly minimal AFL contract, a good clubman and probably having the time of his life.

He is not close to replacing Marchbank, McGovern, Kemp or even Young.

The season is long and there will be injuries. He’s important to the list balance.

In my opinion of course aha x

I really believe that S.Durdin will play if fit. He is a bloody good defender. Calm and rarely beaten. Last pre season I saw him beat Charlie & McKay numerous times.

If he takes the best forward, allows Weitering to play on 2nd best and be more attacking we will be better. McGovern & Marchbank fight for the third tall spot

Not sure about that one. Treacle slow. Very happy for him to prove me wrong but I can't see him making the starting 22 unless something very bad has happened on the injury front.

If you look at the second Carlton v coll game (as I did last night), you can see how valuable Martin is. The out-bodying of Maynard (on several occasions) to take marks or cause a spill was a thing of beauty imho. When you factor in the skill, game sense, leadership to the hardness it makes for a very, very valuable package.

I’m a big fan.
He’s also arguably our best set shot in the team. Plays every week for me.
