Yes they would be, but I think with Stengle going from a maybe player, to Geelong taking a chance on him and now being a premiership player that loyalty will stick fat, he was pretty much at the crossroads with his career. Ben Ainsworth, the ability is there but at the moment he's still inconsistent, had three really good games against Hawthorn, Carlton and Brisbane and some other games where he played well and at 25 going on 26 now is the time to go to another level for him.

Having said that I would be very surprised if he left Gold Coast now, the way they are improving and with Damien Hardwick at the helm and going through the tough years {a bit like us} and the faith of selecting him with their first pick in the 2016 draft {pick 4}, also worth remembering they lost another small forward not long ago {Izak Rankine}.
Yeah I think Stengle will likely stay loyal but I reckon big money could turn his head

Cats will be on the rebuild he has won his flag with them on minimal coin now time to capitalise his pay

Ainsworth would be the go home factor whether he wants to get back to vic or stay in Gc for his career

I think either could be gettable for different reasons

Agree 100% with this.

Was also tasked with playing upfield more to cover our serious lack of senior bodies in the middle which was out of his wheelhouse. Can he get better? I hope so. Is he in any danger for now - not even remotely.
He’s unequivocally the best option on the HFF on the list. He looks ****ing fit entering this year. Absolutely primed.

The shiny new toys will get their chance when they’re physically ready.

Just FYI on my views RE Cam, with the influx of talent, I was saying purely based on accountability in terms of form, he will need to be more consistent as he now has more youngsters fighting for his spot as well.

In the past he has been our barometer, but now he needs to show the way from a consistency basis so our young players can pick up the pace. The fact he's lost weight is very encouraging signs and should reflect positively on his endurance levels (which means he should be able to chase harder and find the footy more often).

Him being best 22 regardless of form is what I don't agree with. Have to enforce standards and it starts from the seniors down.

I'm expecting a big year from him and a contract extension. Been his biggest supporter but now is time to really get going and enjoying footy every week rather than having the odd cracker game every other week.

We’ve got 99 problems and Zurhaar ain’t one of em.
Great post, on a percentage wise I think your right!

Anyway, enough of the drug trade, back to the player trade.

I reckon that no matter what happens this year, at the very least we’re still short one proven tall forward, one proven small forward, and one proven tall defender.

Here's a non-exhaustive list of OOC and FA players who would be in our best 22 or thereabouts:

Mitchell Hinge
Hugh McCluggage (RFA)
Keidean Coleman
Caleb Marchbank (RFA)
Andrew McGrath (RFA)
Elijah Tsatas
Nathan O'Driscoll
Jack Henry (RFA)
Jack Bowes
Jake Kolodjashnij (UFA)
Tyson Stengle (UFA)
Zach Guthrie (RFA)
Ben King
Ben Ainsworth (RFA)
Ned Moyle
Harry Perryman (RFA)
Isaac Cumming (RFA)
Blake Hardwick (RFA)
Changkuoth Jiath
Jack Scrimshaw
James Blanck
Ed Langdon
Aliir Aliir
Jeremy Finlayson
Lachlan Jones
Todd Marshall (RFA)
Jack Ross
Liam Baker
Samson Ryan
Dan Butler
Jack Hayes
Josh Battle (RFA)
Errol Gulden
Liam Duggan (UFA)
Liam Ryan
Jamarra Ugle-Hagan
Tim English (RFA)

(I'm not including forward flankers, or anyone who plays exclusively on-ball, or anyone who will be 30 or over in 2025)

No one is best 22 regardless of form (or should be) I agree.

The point is that even when in average form he's been nowhere near bad enough to be dropped for years IMO.

So we’ve still got a spare list spot but noone outside our vfl list trying out and indication is we are leaving it spare for the MSD

Plus can take 2 category B rookies (international, cross code or indigenous nga academy players). We were the only club last year that didn’t have at least 1 cat b rookie

No point wasting those spots if we don’t feel we’ll get a long term player from it. It just ends up being a waste of resources.

Historically we have never had any luck with the cat B rookie list, so I don’t blame us for waiting for the right players to recruit.

We got to do better at recruiting these free hits, not just stop cos we haven’t

Other clubs have had success with cat b rookies

Outside of Collingwood, Geelong and a Richmond there aren’t too many clubs that have had tonne of success with Cat B rookies.

You can exclude GWS, Sydney, GC because their academy zoning gives them an unfair advantage when it comes to Cat B rookies.

In saying that, I think we missed an opportunity with some Tas players last year that were eligible for our academy. If our academy wasn’t such a shitshow we could’ve potentially taken Jack Callinan as a Cat B rookie.

We're desperate for talls, surely there's someone worth a spot.
At this point its probably prudent to wait and see if we get LTIs in underserviced positions.

eg. Little point have another tall forward if Lmac gets an LTI in round 2 and Archer can't get on the pitch after overdoing it in the PS.

Probably more of an issue with such a young list and development resources stretched thin.

what's the issue with picking someone now and then waiting for LTI mid year? we've got a free list spot.

Important defender signs long-term deal with Pies -

COLLINGWOOD defender Isaac Quaynor has signed a five-year extension with the Magpies, keeping him at the club until at least the end of 2029.

Quaynor has played 85 games for Collingwood, including 26 in last year's premiership-winning season, after arriving at the Pies as a Next Generation Academy (NGA) product in the 2018 draft.

The 24-year-old was named in the All-Australian squad and finished sixth in the E.W. Copeland Trophy.

"I'll be forever grateful to Collingwood who gave me my first AFL opportunity back in 2018 and I'm thankful to have secured my future at this club," Quaynor said.

"The last few seasons have been so special and the environment that's been created has been amazing. Each week, I can't wait to run out with this amazing group of players and to do so in front of our incredible Magpie Army.

"The future of Collingwood is so bright and I look forward to this next chapter of my journey at this club."

Quaynor enjoyed arguably the best season of his career last year, averaging 16.2 disposals, 5.5 marks and 2.6 tackles.

"We're excited to have Isaac extend with Collingwood for a further five years," Magpies general manager of football Graham Wright said.

"Throughout his time at the club, Isaac has shown great commitment to his development which has translated in his impressive contributions on-field particularly throughout the 2022 and 2023 seasons.

"Isaac's maturity and professionalism stand out, and why we regard him as a future leader for this club.

"We're excited to see him continue to develop and contribute to our football program and club in the years to come."

The Magpies begin their premiership defence against Greater Western Sydney in Opening Round on March 9.

There’s a master plan to passing pick 48
There is no great plan or mystery here. We didn't take anyone at 48 because there was nobody left who we thought was worth a two year contract. Maxing out our primary list with players we could have rookie listed has caused us problems in the last couple of drafts. I'm glad we appear to be learning from those mistakes.

Will be one to look back on in years to come

But let’s say we are right in our judgement there’s still no train on players outside our vfl trying to take our last available list spot

Leaving it spare for msd when knowing our luck we will get a long term injury anyway seems lazy

Not exactly rocket science, is it?

We have a lot of young players already and only so many development coaches. They may have decided extra kids would spread the load too thin and we are better concentrating on the group we already have than trialing a few more. We already have more players on our list than most teams. Four more than Collingwood, who are trialing several. But they are presumably looking for back-up or role players - which is not really the stage we are at.
