Training 2024 Pre-Season

Ro always strikes me as someone who loves footy and loves his life.
I wouldn't think he'd have much to complain about. Gets loads of exercise and stimulation, gets to play his favourite game of following the ball around with other's similar to his size, gets nutritious and regular meals, and plenty of playtime outside of all these things.
He has a good life.
He's a good boy our 'Ro, and we love him.
Seems the others in the leadership group agree.

Your memory serves you well and it's no coincidence that when Seb was having that patch where he was dialilling up some elite numbers we looked the best we did all season as a team. He will still be in our best 23 for at least another 2 years before any of the kids dislodge him.
Seb has always played better with a solid midfield around him. We have asked him to play plenty of roles he's not suited to. As a 3rd or 4th midfielder in the team he will shine.

What does being in the leadership group expose the players to? Obviously they are a voice for the playing group but I dont know what other responsibilities they have?

Its a decision by poll by the players themselves, they must rate Seb. The other thing is RTB loves players he can rely on with their effort and he knows what he will get from Seb. Perhaps on field players will go past him but that is a good thing. Even if Seb is playing VFL his leadership will be invaluable in the development of the younger group.
From memory Seb used to be in at 7am leading meditation sessions with a group of the players a few days a week. Not sure if he's still doing that.

I know Ben Robbins rated him really highly as a leader.

Got to be Carlton.

They bloody well need a good year given some of the expectations which I think are a little too high.

A few people are picking the Saints but if we finish 12th no one in the AFL community will bat an eyelid as expectations are already pretty middling.
Carlton will be an interesting watch…already missing JSOS for the year plus Weitering & Walsh early…they wouldn’t want to lose any other star’s!!

Seb being in the leadership team makes sense.

Does not for mine mean he is guaranteed best 22.

Those calling for Owens are being premature, he's a shy quiet kid not ready yet.
Unfortunately if you’re in the leadership group you’ll be pretty much guaranteed a senior spot..that’s my point, nothing against Ross, he’s been a good servant of the club but I’m looking at the bigger picture, particularly with our midfield set up which hasn’t been good enough!!

Indeed!

I meant to post that in a thread on the main board about which team is going to disappoint.

I don't have us as 12th but externally that's the expectation from a lot of folks.

Hopefully not, I don't want to see anyone guaranteed a spot.

As a leader, he's probably got runs on the board but if he's not performing I hope RTB can look past that and give Paddy etc a shot.

The difference is that the leadership group is a 'role' in the team. There will be training, gameday and out of hours expectations of these guys. We see the results but not the effort.

I remember similar discussions when Geary was captain.

Carlton were close to getting rid of JSOS for a 3rd rounder. I don't think he'll be missed. Walsh is good but they have enough depth in that area, but Weitering is a huge loss.

Lack of talent won't be their downfall, it will be complacency and missed shots on goal.

Wait why are we talking about Carlton?

That was my bad. I posted in the wrong thread.

Anyway, Carlton is shit lets leave it at that.

There’s only a handful of media guys I’ve seen at training, so the majority are basing their opinion on zero current exposure.
David King is one who’s bothered to watch our training & he’s bullish about our prospects!

We just saw a club drop their captain for 2 months last season, I don't think being in the leadership group guarantees you anything. He can still be a leader at training without playing seniors every week, although he will probably end up playing more weeks than not.

Their biggest weakness is their coach IMO, and I was very pleased they just signed him to a contract extension.

Yep…one of the young breed would’ve been good, Windhager’s been impressive or a Josh Battle, who’s now settled into a fine player who’s been terrific all preseason.
Looking at the big picture, l say there's no rush. Let the kids be kids for now. Windhager will take the C in due course.

I see it a little different. They were carried by their two big fwds and relied on their midfield to protect a skinny backline. But their fans are no rocky, they know that their side needs to have a good year.

Anyway, how's the midfield looking. Blown away by the thought of Pou and Henry playing centre square.

Would have liked Brad Hill in the leadership group for a number of reasons.
1. Big game player. 3 premierships, knows finals, was almost BoG for us in the final.
2. Vocal and seems a real leader on the track.
3. A great inspiration for our many indigenous players and a great role model.

But I don't know the internal dynamics of the club.

Rang the club this morning to check the start time for training due to the heat… waited on hold so long I simply hung up.

Shithouse.

Maybe the bigger picture is they still see Ross as a contributing part of the midfield group, both in what he can do with his football and what he can do to help the younger players develop, and they aren't in a rush to retire him off like the fans seem to be.
