Is Matthew Nicks the right coach for Adelaide?

  • Firmly yes (I love what I'm seeing)

  • Leaning yes

  • Can't decide either way

  • Leaning no (but don't sack him yet)

I am certainly not sold on Nicks as a coach, as although seems to have players backing and a fighting spirit in team .
But clearly he is out of his depth with team structures and systems that create spaces to run into and lead into etc,
However he has little support with the bargain basement assistant coaches that he and club have assembled.
They let the best coach walk out the door back to Geelong .
Apart from Burns none of them have any real credentials and have him plugging holes.
Our last 2 appointments are Jack Hombsch ( why --where --what )
But we topped that in appointing a hack SANFL ruckman that could never bother to get in real playing shapes as our ruck coach.
Got my doubts about Burns too

1 minute from winning a flag and was it another 1-2 prelims?
He had a great team & most resources of any club... yet never won a flag.

Imo, underachieved.

However, coaches often come back better the 2nd time around.

Buckley was very (very) much disliked by the Collingwood BF board during the middle part of his tenure, missing finals from 2014 - 2017. The Grand Final year of 2018 saved him, although I do recall seeing some Collingwood fans on here claiming the turnaround was due to the assistants!

He’d run his race at Collingwood by the end. And some of the criticisms of Nicks - wedded to structure, inflexible, love of “battlers and role players” are the same as levelled at Buckley.

But the above is spoken of all coaches tbh, some manage to find innovation and or become more flexible, more willing to change over time.

I think if Buckley does want to coach again and would be willing to relocate to SA, then he would be worth considering for sure. A few years out of coaching, the opportunity to have learned and reflect etc could be just what he needed.

Rest assured, if Nicks doesn’t work out, the AFC coaching role will be a very attractive proposition and there will be no shortage of candidates 👍

After his x sells their place in Toorak and if he relocated he could buy his own suburb

Absolutely 😆 He certainly wouldn’t be requiring a huge salary… I guess it all comes down to the drive, passion, will, whatever you want to define it as.

He would be worth asking the question of if it the job became vacant. Simpson also if I’m being honest 👍

Sadly. I think Simpson has gone as far as he can with your list.

Time for the team and nicks to stand up this week, this is a defining game in his final season with us.

Doesn't make sense for round 2 but I tend to agree. I don't think we are good enough to come from too far back.

Even though Freo are nothing special, I wouldn’t want to be going to Perth 0-2 with such a young side.

Yes, I am glad the board stayed the course with retaining him for this season, I can see both sides to the argument (about him going last year), but is likely another bottom two finish regardless of who is in charge.

He is contracted for next year… but I don’t know, with all the other changes in the club, if there is not a demonstrated level of improvement, not so much wins, but basic competitiveness, development of young players and an increase in % then I think he will go, even with the contract in place. Each loss is being counted, especially with a hostile local media who agitated for him to be sacked for most of last year!

He’d be a good fit for a list ready made or requiring a few tweaks and developments like the AFC.

It’s a crucial game for him. I think you’ll win the next two, but yes a loss this week, and he has every right to be nervous. He should be on edge and at the top of his game, his job depends on it. More close away losses and losses to average sides at home are simply not acceptable.

I’m glad the club hasn’t rushed to re-sign, contrary to the media “talk”. I personally don’t see it with the chairman, I think he will want to see some positive results first.

He picks sides for here and now, he knows exactly what he is doing. To bad half the squad needs a selection for the future mindset.
If he had simply picked M Crouch over Treacle Sloane last year he'd already have a new contract.
Murphy stock play is drawing the free kick by going in head first.
Sholl is too slight to win a one on one contest so should be a break glass player.
The Cats will bail out attack down Sholl's wing all night on Friday because it is low risk.
Players like Cook and Nankervis continue to rot in the two's.
