Is Matthew Nicks the right coach for Adelaide?

  • Firmly yes (I love what I'm seeing)

  • Leaning yes

  • Can't decide either way

  • Leaning no (but don't sack him yet)

A few things do not play in Nicks favour.

1. the fact we clearly have not developed a post Walker forward line. Fogarty is not a main forward which means we are reliant on Gollant. So the question is, why is it taking him so long to get games? Should have played nearly ever game last year without question. Oh wait...finals. Lets chuck all our development out the window so we finish 8th and lose the first week of finals, or maybe fluke a win but lose the following week, meanwhile Walker whose like 80 and on his last legs edges closer to retirement and looks set to retire with no one ready to fill the void. The club is clearly worried about this hence the recruitment of Burgess, but if Burgess was actually any good, he would have played more than 40 games of AFL football before he turned 28. There is no question, walkers form last year won us more games than we deserved.

2. the continued selection of developed players who add nothing to the team, over and above the next generation of players who will. I don't recall a more exciting draft hall with huge wraps on all of them at training, yet not one of them could make it to a first game debut in an injury hit side. Not even the more developed recent draftees got a go.....yet Burgess was the answer and so is the Sanfl even thoguh its widely acknowledge the Crows don't rate the Sanfl for development at all.

3. Our midfield. Rankine and Rachele as much as we want to pretend they are midfielders they aren't Laird, Crouch or Dawson quality, they are more of bit players you want to spend more time up forward. Which leaves Berry, Cook, Pedlar, Edwards and Curtin as next generation mids to come in. Laird is on the wrong side of 30 and Crouch is fast getting there. Berry looks set to be one option, but we need others. I don't see a lot of development in this area other than a coach desperate to put his best players on the ball and if that means forward pockets so be it.

I hate to say it guys, but we look set for a greater hit. Im seeing holes in our list that aren't being filled because of a misguided attempt to simply make finals over and above developing a side that can win it all and be a contender long term.

I thought Roo would be the main mouth piece. He should have been told to go when we had the clean out. I don’t see us getting the coach we need while he sticks around. It would be interesting to know who else has a say in the decision.

Same process used that got Walsh and then Pyke

If things go south for nicks over the next month, who is actually available and would come to Adelaide? Dew?

Would assume Burns would go in as interim coach and we would promote some SANFL coach into the box,

We would then get the usual spin about 'finding the best coach in the land' but then the cold hard reality sets in to realise we can only get who wants to come to Adelaide.

If we are looking bad by the mid year Bye, I would be extremely nervous if I was Nicks.

Somehow, Robbo perfectly describes the problem with Nicks and where we are at. He hasn't proven yet he can take the club from a team that coulda, shoulda, woulda won, to one that actually wins.

7. Please, no excuses Adelaide

In 2023, it was poor old Adelaide. They should’ve played finals save for a dumb umpire decision. They could’ve beaten Collingwood twice (they lost by one point and two points). They could’ve beaten Melbourne (lost by four points). They could’ve beaten Brisbane (lost by six points). And they should’ve beaten Sydney (lost by one point). On Saturday, they could’ve beaten Gold Coast, but they didn’t. The Crows have to shake the “could’ve and should’ve” tag. It’s a cop out. They lost by six points to the Suns after kicking a paltry three goals in the first three quarters. The absence of Tex Walker and Riley Thilthorpe didn’t help, but that wasn’t the issue in the final quarter when the Crows kicked 5.2 to 1.3 which turned a certain loss into an exciting finish. Gallantry is for Richmond losing three players with injury and pushing the Blues to the limit. Where were the Crows for three quarters?

Think hes enjoying the plum media gig and likes the Melb social scene etc

I would be keeping close tabs on Dean Cox from Sydney, by all reports is a very good operator.

Kingsley is looking the goods so there's definitely good candidates out there that are currently assistants at other clubs.

I also think our list profile would be attractive to prospective coaches.

Cox would definitely be someone the club should be looking at.

It's interesting to see what the Bombers, of all clubs, recognised and are trying to achieve.
Even though it was against the Hawks, they are trying to improve
Our club culture of reverence for senior players will again be our undoing.

Bombers find a new midfield mix

Brad Scott laid down the challenge to some young Bombers hoping to make a more permanent move to midfield this year. Against the Hawks, it was those players trusted with stepping up — their success or failure could decide the game.

Scott's faith was justified. The clearance work of Archie Perkins, Sam Durham, Will Setterfield and even Elijah Tsatas when he came on as sub was mighty impressive, and in truth defined the game.
