Is Matthew Nicks the right coach for Adelaide?

  • Firmly yes (I love what I'm seeing)

  • Leaning yes

  • Can't decide either way

  • Leaning no (but don't sack him yet)

  • Firmly no (he should be sacked)

Its the worst of both worlds

Someone like Roo who knows enough and has the clout to be dangerous, and in a position where his opinion has weight

But not employed in the day to day to understand whats going on, and not accountable when things go wrong

After the 2018-2019 debacle where there was plenty of media and fan criticism of Roo and his seemingly over the top power, the current quiet Roo tells us he has has been silenced by Olsen and probably had his decision making powers stripped. Probably nothing more than a glorified consultant now. Which tells you one thing, Nicks was not re-signed by Roo. So who exactly did it?

Isn't Roo more than just a standard Board member?

I could have sworn that it was mentioned during the review that he has some sort of additional footy ops type role attached to his Board member role.

I'm pretty sure he acts as a conduit been the Board and the players/coaches.

All board members have roles. Roo oversees the football department. But I think what some people are getting at is he is no longer the king maker at Adelaide, not like he was in 2014-2019

He’s only a board member. An unpaid, part time volunteer.

He certainly acts as a conduit, reporting to the board; just like board member in charge of the finance & audit committee reports to the board on his (her) area of responsibility

There will be a board member with marketing expertise who does the same

People confuse a lot of what Adam Kelly is responsible for, with Roo because of his profile and ease of recognition

That’s not to say Roo is doing a good job but he’s not this all powerful, all-seeing bogeyman either

You’re working on the assumption that we are a well run professional organisation that doesn’t let personality, reputation and relationships impact on their decisions. When it comes to football his opinion would hold a lot of weight, partly because he’s the football director and partly because of who he is.

Being very good mates didn’t hurt Burton getting the job, especially given Roo went on radio 3 weeks prior saying both families went away and Burton wants to come home, then presto, Burton gets the gig even with a shit history at Brisbane.

Is it too late to poach Hardwick?

I wonder what Nicks’ signature brand of football is and what it requires

Makes you wonder if any player of ours could speak with such certainty on their role on gameday the way Ellis does.

Our board has 2 main functions
1. To scrutinise and hold accountable the executive

2. To hire (and ultimately fire) the senior executive

That’s it.

Our board or a board?

He’s the football director when we were devoid of football people at the club. He sits on the list management committee. He talks about why we let players go on radio and reveals their contracts, one of his best mates we employed with a shit work history, do you think that was a coincidence? He scouted and talked Walsh into the job.

He’s much more to the club than just some board director. He’s a living legend whose opinion matters or well it did, hopefully we are weaning ourselves off him given how shit our football has been.

Thats his job. Argue he did it badly but that’s literally his remit

As I’ve argued before we lack proper footy people inside the tent; it’s highly likely Roo has outsized influence due to the vacuum of seriously credentialed people in key management positions

Not sure what we are debating here, many of us state through his remit and influence he’s been involved in many poor decisions which have resulted in us being a football basket case.

We’ve had change of coaches, footy ops, CEO, fitness, chairman and board, he’s been the one constant through this whole shitshow.

The board are also the only one who can hire and fire coaches.

When Craig was sacked after that Friday night game against St Kilda I remember Chapman talked about how they had to arrange an urgent Board meeting to discuss Craig's future because they didn't want to sleep on it.

They had an urgent meeting pretty much straight after the game that went until the early hours of the morning and he was sacked.

Jeez in the post match Nicks said - “we need to look at our team from a selection point of view and get guys in that are going to be able to play the way we play."

Whereas Hardwick actually just did it.

His role and involvement is much smaller than people think

They confuse him and Kelly

Yeah, I mainly want Roo gone because I don't think it is healthy to have a Riverland gronk on any board, anywhere. That said the blue rinse set just voted in a guy whose sum total of expertise is being on bumkin local television for decades, so the bar is low.

Best case they are like most volunteers, not actually doing much at all.

His role and involvement is much smaller than people think

They confuse him and Kelly

People think Roo has his hand in every till. It was only late last year when we had big issues with selection that quite a few people on here jumped to the conclusion Roo walks into selection meetings with his list of players and demands they get played with many defending Nicks under the assumption Roo tells him what to do and who to select.

Kelly came after we had to sack Roos mate

But objectively, Burton was hired in 2015 and in that time we made a GF. It really wasn't until after the camp the club went downhill and it wasn't until 2019 camp rumours began to float. Its hard to blame Roo for a retrospective mistake when it comes down to it.

His involvement is limited but not decision making.

Roo is a major decision maker in the employment of guys like Justin Ried, Adam Kelly and Nicks.

The Board don't sit around debating the merits of extending Nicks. People like Olsen, Roo, Silvers and Kelly make that call and make a recommendation to the board.

Roo has little influence on list management apart from oversight of the strategy. He would have a say in decisions like Gibbs and Rankine and if we decided to trade our future first but not the smaller decisions. Given the complexities Reid is really the only one that can make the decisions once the broad direction is set. Reid presents direct to the Board.

Roo has next zero influence on selection apart from some high level strategy.

After all Roo's whining prior to our rebuild, do you think he'd have genuinely recommended Nicks at this stage? Considering Nicks is making every poor choice imaginable, and is worse the Sanderson.
