Opinion Matthew Nicks: Adelaide's Coach (Part 2) - Full Support of the Board

Is Matthew Nicks the right coach for Adelaide?

  • Firmly yes (I love what I'm seeing)

  • Leaning yes

  • Can't decide either way

  • Leaning no (but don't sack him yet)

  • Firmly no (he should be sacked)

I am sure its been discussed, just can't find it.

The Jordan Dawson sitting on the bench for 6 minutes in the 4th quarter. Is that a Nicks thing?

Probably a set rotation but you know you can’t be flexible.

Senior Cornes was going on about it and justifying it - well thats bullshit, you don’t have your best player on the pine and not find a way to get him onto the ground.

Probably listens to Burgess ;)

I'd love for someone who has more time than me to make a video clip showing say the first 60 seconds after each point we scored versus Melbourne. I'm willing to be nearly 95% of the time Melbourne get the ball to at least the centre wing without us laying a finger on it.
No video clip, but I've done a transcript. I'll leave a TLDR at the top.

Made it to (or further than) centre wing without Adelaide touching it: 8

Only made it to defensive wing before Adelaide touched it: 6

Didn't exit D50 without Adelaide touching it: 1.

0.1: Rivers kick in. Uncontested mark by Gawn outside D50. Turnover centre wing (uncontested mark by Laird). Adelaide F50 stoppages eventually lead to next behind.

0.2: McVee kick in. Uncontested mark by May in Melbourne back pocket. Turnover in Melbourne D50 due to man on the mark (Walker) touching it off the boot. No score eventuates.

1.3: Rivers kick in. Uncontested mark by McDonald in D50. Contested mark by Gawn at defensive wing. Handball receive by Rivers. Uncontested mark by Petracca at offensive wing. Uncontested mark by Chandler just outside F50. Uncontested mark by Pickett inside Melbourne F50. Goal for Melbourne.

1.4: May kick in. Contest leads to stoppage at defensive wing. Crouch wins free kick for high contact. No score eventuates.

1.5: McVee kick in. Uncontested mark by Salem in D50. We break even at the next marking contest. Ball is kicked along the ground by Melbourne player. Worrell touches it at centre wing. Stoppage occurs.

2.6: McVee kick in. Uncontested mark by Salem in D50. Free kick to Worrell (incorrectly paid holding, should've been paid for arm chop) at defensive wing. No score eventuates.

3.7: May kick in. Semi contested mark by Rivers on the D50 line. Handball receive by May. Uncontested mark by Chandler on centre wing. Marking contest 10 metres outside Melbourne's 50 (Michalanney spoil). Fritsch wins ground ball. Handball receive by Windsor. Uncontested mark by Petty. Petty scores a behind.

3.8: McVee kick in. Uncontested mark by Langdon 5 metres outside D50. Handball receive by Rivers. Contest near centre square leads to JVR free kick (holding, paid against Keane). Soligo spoils inside Melbourne's F50. Michalanney wins ground ball, no score eventuates.

6.9: May kick in. Uncontested mark by Rivers in D50. Contest at centre wing spoiled by O'Brien. McHenry wins ground ball, tackle leads to ball up.

6.10: May kick in. Uncontested mark by Salem in D50. Contest at centre wing spoiled by Butts. Ground ball never truly won, Petracca and Butts both get hands on it. Ball up. Melbourne wins stoppage, Adelaide forces turnover in the middle of the ground. Adelaide scores a behind.

6.11: May kick in. Uncontested mark by McVee in D50. Uncontested mark by Rivers on the D50 line. Contest at centre wing, touched by several players (biggest fist likely comes from Brown). Neal-Bullen wins uncontested ground ball. Fritsch takes uncontested mark 15 metres outside F50. Uncontested mark inside 50 to Petty. Petty scores a behind.

7.12: May kick in. Runs roughly half the D50 before kicking. Keane vs Petty contest on defensive wing leads to Keane spoil. Hinge wins ground ball. All of Adelaide's next three disposals are unclean but effective. Keane kicks to just outside 50 next to the boundary line, marked uncontested by Oliver. This was Melbourne's 20th (and final) intercept mark of the game.

8.13: Howes kick in. Uncontested mark by Rivers in D50. Contest at defensive wing, spoiled by O'Brien.

8.14: McVee kick in. Contest at the bottom right tip of the centre square (Adelaide's half), spoiled by Michalanney. Laird wins ground ball. Adelaide switch, but give away free kick on Melbourne's D50 line (high contact against Rachele, paid to Howes). Melbourne scores a behind after this.

8.15: Lever kick in. Intercept mark by Keane in Melbourne defensive half. Kick goes out on the full. No score eventuates.

The main issue is we don't have a strong 'footy' person inside the hierarchy at Adelaide. (No, im not counting that turncoat clown Ricciuto)

Kelly, Silvers, Olsen.... Literally outside of AFC supporters, no one else would even know who these blokes are.

We don't have a Neil Balme, Ross Lyon, Tom Harley, Graham Wright, Brendon Gale, Simon Lloyd etc etc type in our setup. Strong football operators who don't take any sh*t and strive for professional success.

Its actually sad the quality of personnel we now have running the club.

I think that’s right. People still think Roo is an employee with a major hand

Roo is a part time, unpaid volunteer who sits on the board and has no day to day responsibilities

Someone like a Neil Balme, Graham Wright or Tom Harley; frankly I think West Coast were smart AF to get Don Pyke in as CEO

Where are the real footy people on the inside?

Happens a lot. At least it used to when they first restricted runners. Not sure now, but have watched many a game with BT in a flap about a bloke being stuck in the bench.

And that’s about the only latitude I’m willing to give this shitshow of a coaching group.

Just do what North Adelaide does play with 19 on the field.

Sack Nicks now, give Blighty the keys, and sort out a long term option at the end of the season.

Its the worst of both worlds

Someone like Roo who knows enough and has the clout to be dangerous, and in a position where his opinion has weight

But not employed in the day to day to understand whats going on, and not accountable when things go wrong

Isn't Roo more than just a standard Board member?

I could have sworn that it was mentioned during the review that he has some sort of additional footy ops type role attached to his Board member role.

I'm pretty sure he acts as a conduit been the Board and the players/coaches.
