RookieMe's Swans Academy Coates League preview
FIXTURE:

DRAFT-AGE TALENT:
The Swans have access to Joel Cochran, a National Academy member and versatile 195cm talent. He looks poised to settle down back but has also had stints up forward and through the ruck. At his size, he moves well to intercept and is a handy user of the ball on his favoured left foot.
Perhaps the next best top-ager in the Swans program is midfielder Joe Harrison. He’s a hard runner who can also roll forward. Aside from the aforementioned pair, Sydney has talent scattered in both its over-age and bottom-age categories.
Former AFL Academy member Lachlan Cabor is back with more VFL experience under his belt. He and Ned Hawkins have been selected to play in the Swans’ first match, while forward Max Rider is another who should get a run with the Under 18 side.
After yielding quite an even top-age crop last year, Sydney could also call upon the likes of James Lugsdin, Harrison Podmore-Taylor, and Caleb May for its academy side. The latter two are imposing talls, with May an Allies representative in last year’s title-winning team.
THE FUTURE:
Sydney produced two Under 16 All Australians last year in MVP Lachlan Carmichael and tall forward Noah Chamberlain. Carmichael is a medium defender capable of playing above his height on the intercept, but perhaps more prominent with his sharp rebound work.
Chamberlain has already gained experience in the Under 18 side, turning out for three games as a 16-year-old in 2023. At 192cm, he marks the ball strongly overhead and looms as the Swans’ most dangerous spearhead inside 50.
Another player to look out for is Max King, who blitzed the preseason combine. He has serious upside with such athletic potential, but can also find the footy and play in any third of the ground. He’ll most likely slot into a mid-forward rotation for the Swans.

Will likely head into Dandenong to check out the Academy girls and boys. If I think of it I might take some notes. Chances are though I will forget.

Quick look at the girls warm ups. Swans look to have a bigger balance of talls v smalls. Gippy girls look to be stronger through the body but not as fast. Prediction is if we get first hands on it we should win this. If it is a body in body tussle Gippy will thrive. Gippy wise I know of Ava D who is likely to play forward and knows how to find the goals and Ashley P who played against my school in inter school sport. Has a massive engine, skills are reasonably good but can bite off more than she can chew at times.

siren beating goal puts our girls up 7-3 at quarter time. Parker down back for us seems composed. Martin knows how to find the ball in open space in the forward line. Letting Gippsland a bit free through the middle and the likes of Deszcz are looking impressive.

Best for swans that quarter Parker down back who seems to be defending 2 at a time and doing a pretty good job and Watson who seems to be playing around half forward, gets her hands on the ball and not afraid to go in hard. Her second efforts have been noteworthy as well.
Seem to be getting caught out a bit on the fast break. Have been impressed with the marking from both sides. Still a bit of moisture on the turf from yesterday so the balls are not the easiest to handle yet there have been some decent grabs taken.

Didn’t realise Cal Sinclair was doing work with our academy.
Yates started the quarter getting plenty of hands in the ball early in the 3rd. Repeated forward entries but only a goal to show. Smith also looking good at times with some great F 50 marks and entries.
Dominant third quarter. Gippsland 2.7 scoreless swans 7.5. Midfield really took hold and completely starved Gippy of the ball. Dare say 70% of that quarter played in our front half. Dangers for Gippy early have run out of puff.
Watson off for a concussion test. Front on contact and landed on her back. Was tearing it up too. Gippy ended up shifting Perkins onto her who is one of their players that can run all day.
Final score swans 71 power 19. Gippsland didn’t score in the second half. Dominant performance after quarter time. Definite difference in fitness levels.
Boys warm up. Gippy look to have a few taller players. But our “boys” look like men. Strong fellas and look clean with their hands.

Was this game streamed? Had a quick look but couldn't find anything.
And how about the upcoming boys' academy game? Is that streamed, even if the girls' game wasn't? I've found the match in the fixture list in the Coates Talent League app but there wasn't an obvious link to a stream.
Not sure if I will watch it since it clashes with the VFLW game, but wouldn't mind watching the first quarter or so before the VFLW starts.

Quarter time Gippy 1.3 Swans 3.6
Boys were on with three goals in the first 5 minutes. Game become a lot more contested which slowed opportunities a bit. Fitzpatrick in the middle looked impressive early along with Chamberlain up forward. As the quarter went on Cabor really looked heads above most others. Bit harder to tell who is doing well due to the contested nature.

Close game at the half. Gippy 37 to 32 with some push and shove coming off the ground. Use of the ball in the forward half was pretty ordinary that quarter. Hitchens seems to be a bit of a hot head. Thought he kicked a goal and was called touched. Lost the plot arguing with the ump rather than setting up for the kick out. Umpiring has been very one sided and resulting in GP just running into opponents head first and it’s being rewarded.
In other news hot dogs are 5 bucks and come out hot on a crispy roll not like the warm soggy shit at Marvel or the G. Dummy’s an absolute rip off at 5 bucks for 3.

On a side note, very poor form that the only post (on Facebook) about both of today's Academy games comes at half time of the boys' game!
