    Our U16 teams will also be in action, with both boys and girls teams travelling to Brisbane to face the Lions Academy in the Northern Academy Series.

    It’s a great opportunity for our U16 squads to play the Brisbane Lions and there will be plenty of exciting, young on display for both sides as we look for future players progressing through the Academy pathway.

    The boys game starts Sunday at 12.10pm.

    On Swans they have East Melbourne , in my 84 years ive never heard it called that , it's Punt rd . East Melbourne starts at Wellington st

    Edit: I do not believe we should match any bid above 30 as it stands with performance. Cleary looks very one dimensional as a pure inside mid.

    I am also of the opinion that if bids come in the top 25 top 30 for our Academy players this year we should match unless there is significant improvement.

    We need top end talent and a bit of size in the mid field

    We need plays with unique strengths

    There is a few potentials in this years top 25 top 30

    We can’t mess up this draft

    Particularly with Tassie coming in

    The next two drafts will be very crucial

    Scouting Notes: 2023 Talent League - Round 6

    All Allies contingents descended on the Gold Coast for Round 6 of the Coates Talent League. We noted some of the top performers.

    Some takeaways from 'rookieme' on players from our game last weekend v Brisbane Academy;
    Sydney won 8.13.61 to Bris 3.6.24

    SWANS ACADEMY:
    #11     Indhi Kirk
    Arguably the Swans’ best-performed player across their near-complete Talent League tenure, Kirk was again busy through midfield with 23 disposals and 10 tackles. The tough son of a gun looked lively in the early stages as he found exits in tight spots, before making good use of possession. Kirk’s smarts, evasiveness and spatial awareness were all on show, though he made a few uncharacteristic errors as the game wore on.

    #23 Tye Gander
    Having shown some promise as a marking forward, the 192cm Gander was trialled on a wing for Sydney to good degrees of success, notching 18 disposals, seven marks and a goal. He often worked his opponent over to accumulate possessions in the back half, helping the Swans set up their transitions. He eventually snuck forward for a goal in the third term though, converting his set shot after marking uncontested.

    #27 Caiden Cleary
    Cleary was his usual self on Saturday, burrowing in and under for a game-high 30 disposals and working hard to notch eight marks, four inside 50s, and three rebound 50s. The inside bull also laid eight tackles and impacted both ways from contest to contest. While relatively effective by hand, he was a touch less confident in his kicking and tended to favour the former method when disposing of the ball.

    In his best performance for the season to date, Webster exuded plenty of confidence en route to registering 24 disposals, six marks and four rebound 50s. The 193cm over-ager looked dynamic, essentially playing as a rebounder with his ability to step past opponents, carry the ball and provide overlap run through the corridor. He was sometimes caught in two minds with ball in hand, but contributed defensively and provided the presence any good over-ager should.

    All four players made the 'rookieme' Team of the Week.

    I like the idea of those 190ish cm players playing through the wings and midfield. A bit Dawson, Bont, Cripps like. If they have the endurance and agility (& footy smarts) then the extra 5-10cm gives a fair bit of advantage. In the same way that height may be 5-10cm too short to play within the arcs.
     
    Turning into an nteresting draft this one. Cabor and Cleary going backwards or stagnating, May rising and a couple of overagers putting their hands up.
    This could be the year we let bids go unmatched.
    ... or, is this the year we dump picks on an a-grader and match bids late to fill our quota.

    I say it every year, but this is an important draft... let’s see if the academy players can force our hand through good form
