Is that you Roo?

Um No.

Factually and having viewed all our games this year that is correct however having attended Saturday’s game, that was the worst performance yet. I literally didn’t care after quarter time and just sat and enjoyed the beers in the glorious sunshine of the Southern Stand.

Skill level horrendous, game plan bad - the same short chippy style in the first half that we have played in a number of games that gets changed in the second half and we then lose by less than a kick.

Curtin's offensive game is more than adequate at AFL level, what's holding him back is leaking goals to 4th/5th best forwards. And opposition teams now all know to drag him back to the last line of defence and expose him. So, regardless of where we start him, he's playing on the full back line at AFL level until he can defend.

If we want him to play effectively at AFL, which we do, then it's his defensive ability we need to work on. The best SANFL forward in a team is probably at best a 4th/5th forward standard at AFL.

Seems a smart approach to me in his (current) development.
If his future is KPD, yes this development curve is appropriate.

But, many see him as a mid. Yes, midfielders need a defensive side, but it is different to playing KPD.
Playing FB in the SANFL does not help his midfield game.

We used a lot of draft currency on a KPD. An area where we have some depth. Our backline is our strongest area and quite good compared even top clubs.

And have a dire need for top quality mids.

Very poor list management.

Or we concede he’s not a defender, develop him into a wing/midfielder/half forward.

The last thing we need is another top 10 pick on a defender. Our defence is fine.

He's not going to be a KPD (or a wing).

He may become a mid in time, but I don't see anything more than spurts in his first few years. Which is all he did as a junior.

I see him as a playmaker off of half back for at least the next few years, potentially with some intercept marking prowess. He will need to be able to defend against a SANFL level best forward to be able to be an effective half back at AFL.

I also think that he's going to be a star for us, and you have to grab best available at the draft.

Given how we are currently playing, our top 6 pick this year should get us that gun mid that we need.

I don't mind having a gun half back playmaker. He does his best work in close with good agility and decision making, so half back or inside mid for mine.

Where we are playing him in the Snaffle is stagnating his development.

It's all well and good to add defensive parts to his game but he won't be our next Ben Rutten. He will be back in Perth if we see him as a last line of defence player.

When moved on the weekend, he created opportunities and we hit the scoreboard.

Put aside individual names for a moment and I'd like to hear what the crowd thinks in terms of what the ideal profile of our next coach should be.

I've taken all of the names mentioned in this thread (did a skim - apologies if I missed any) and plotted them into a table with two main dimensions - coaching pedigree AND Affiliation to AFC / SA.

In which part of this matrix do you think we should be focusing? And why?

How so?

it's only his defensive attributes that are holding him back from playing AFL. Where would you play him to develop this aspect of his game?

As soon as he can defend a 4th/ 5th best AFL forward, there won't be as much focus by oppo teams on dragging him back to the full back line.

HALF BACK PLAY MAKER

(as soon as he can defend a 4th/5th best AFL forward = best SANFL forward)

I did say full back not half back.

You did.

But the full back line in SANFL is where he will get the defensive experience to overcome his issues at AFL level. Playing half back at SANFL level will be too easy defensively.

(noting he apparently got himself to half back on the weekend and picked up a lazy 21 touches. Not that you could blame the kid, much more fun than spoiling).

Ratten is one thats missing and would belong in the Former/No box

He did okay at Carlton and Saints, seeing the rubbish which followed him

He might still have senior coach ambitions and would have a lot of intel from other clubs. He's probably #1 for me of the former AFL coach list. Probably #1 overall really.

Attacking HB is an important position.

If that is his role for a few years, a good outcome.

This one is WAY out of left field (somewhere near Jupiter)...

How about Darren Cahill? At least as some kind of assistant or motivator? He's just coached another tennis player to #1.

I don’t see SA affiliation as something we should be seeking. It’s probably simply a fact that some ppl won’t move here tho.

I don’t think it would stop most aspiring current assistant coaches though. Senior coaching opportunities don’t come often enough to be too choosy. And your moment in sun can pass - look at Scott Burns, no one talks about him as a real contender for senior gif anymore. From memory he was already on the downhill slope when we got him.
