2024/2025 Gold Coast Draft & Trade Periods

Seems like knee-jerk reactions.

AFL is know for it. Happened with JUH at Bulldogs bringing in a rule change for no top 40 NGA access.

Our 4 academy kids will be partly responsible for another knee-jerk reaction. Even though none of the 4 are in the running for rising star, even with the two best players out this year. And even though we traded a top 5 pick away, plus trade other picks back for years, to help secure them.

At best it might be a soft change (e.g more points needed) and then a harder change next season. Who knows…

Laura Kane is another privileged VFL Joke and her eagerness to please the VFL clubs is an existential threat to us.

I declare her an enemy of the GC.
We aren’t allowed to have nice things.

We haven’t finished above 12th in our existence but somehow the moment we get a leg up and our academy starts to produce high calibre home grown talent we are a “threat” and the “competition needs a more broader competitive balance” give me a spell.

They just don’t want us to succeed. It’s unbelievable. Despite ALL the advantages and legs up VIC based clubs get they still have such a deep seated sense of entitlement and think they have a right to whine, whinge and cry that it’s not fair.

Mate, c'mon.....haven't you worked it out yet.....even in 2024, it's still the VFL.....and nothing exists north of the Murray, in their eyes....or west of .......anywhere you want to mention

for Rds 15 to 23

Ess have their next 9 in Melb......that's every game
Carl have 7 from 9
C'wood have 6 from 8

Meanwhile non Vic teams with a chance at finals have

Freo 5 at home
Syd 4
Bris 4
Suns 4 (not that we can make it imo) and that includes 2 trips to Perth, while Ess don't even leave town.

And to make the comp more equitable, the AFL looks like they are going to restrict the nthn academies and make it harder for them to get home grown talent.......

Why am I not surprised......

I guess we'll see what the changes are soon enough, but we'll still be able to take at least one academy kid each year. Just have to get the right ones.

For example we'll get Lombard this year, and Zeke Uwland next year no matter what the rules are. Getting them in the system early and being able to take the best couple each year (can always just draft them if we like) is still an advantage.

You have to assume the Suns saw this coming, hence making sure they got all four last year.

The more kids from the academy playing in the AFL the better though, even if it's not at the Suns. They can always get homesick after a few years developing elsewhere :moustache:

Yeah not stressed about the rules changing, I think it would be unfair to be playing finals and ripping 3 or 4 first round academy picks.
Also think the paying for them with 3rd and 4th round picks is a bit dodgy.
I'm okay with having to have a pick within the round they are bid on. The whole point of the academy is to give these kids similar pathways to what football state kids have. If they get drafted elsewhere it's still a win for the academy. And lots of potential homesick kids 😁

Lukosius always gets a half mention. I do wonder if he's tradeable at the right price, not interested in draft picks but if it was to unlock an a grader like a bolton I would give it some thought.

All well and good letting Ainsworth go but who comes in and plays his role? He goes at roughly a goal a game, a goal assist a game. Who replaces that? The corpse of Nick Holman and Berry dont kick goals, Rosas is better closer to goal than away from it. I don't think Benny A is as replaceable as is being championed here.

How much would you pay him?

Average salary will be $500k soon.

Would you pay overs to keep him?

Roger’s or Lombard for mine… whether they can put 18 good games together tbc

I suppose the question is, how much you willing to pay for that? If he is wanting 100k more a year than we are willing to spend. Remembering, we overpaid him early days, so he is probably wanting a rise on that.

We may also have someone on the hook for his position, would love to know.

I honestly think Dusty could play his role for a year or 2 (at a reasonable rate and if he isn't retiring), allowing us to develop within or line up a longer term prospect.

Again, no issue if he leaves for the paycheck. Not a player worth breaking the cap for.
He’s been overpaid by us all his career to be a specialist at pooping his pants when he has an important shot for goal when games are tight.

He should show some loyalty to his mates, the club and the supporters by giving back and signing that contract.

I’d be disgusted in him if he went.

Ainsworth is a B grade Rankine. Gets goals and goal assists and is reliable, but rarely breaks a game open like Rankine.

But we still need a player like him.
Asking Rogers or Lombard to play that role and expecting them to succeed is insanity. They might, but they are inexperienced and unproven. Rogers is a pretty good field kick (had one good game at least) but Lombard is not what I’d call a clean user, which a high forward needs to be.

That kind of attitude is the old Suns attitude. The youth won’t solve problems straight away and I don’t like the idea of trading over 100 games for someone under 10.

But overpaying is also a poor attitude, and one we have moved past.

It comes down to money. We can try and get a cheaper player on the market to fill the role while the kids develop, if it comes to it. But he has to be replaced, not just given away and expect a kid to step up.

There is a reason he is being chased the way he is. High half forward would just about be the least rewarding role on the field, and I would say Ainsworth is one of the better players at it in the league with his ability to cover the ground back and forth the way he does and still actually be somewhat of a threat.

If we had defenders who could break a zone and move the ball forward at any speed at all, he would be deadly with his speed and skill and have far more goal assists than he does.

It’s true that he has probably been overpaid to this point, but it’s not his fault we gave out the contracts we did and he has watched us toss his mates he was drafted alongside (Bowes/Brodie) to the curb because of our decision to re-sign them for what we did so I don’t know how much he’ll feel he owes us.

Ideally we re-sign him in good terms, but at the end of the day, if we don’t get players in who can get the ball long to him and reward the workrate, it’s probably a waste of money and other clubs out there will highly value what he can bring.

"A talented junior, Evans, 24 is being courted for a Category B rookie spot, similar to former Victorian leg-spinner Wil Parker, who made his debut for Collingwood recently.

Sources indicated Gold Coast was making a strong play for Evans but Geelong, St Kilda and the Magpies have also been linked with him."

Call me crazy but Johnston is the guy for me next year. He showed enough this year on the wing and moving forward and has some elite traits. He just has to show he can be consistent and stay on the field. It will be his 3rd year next season.

Rogers in his 2nd year and hopefully with a full preseason should play most of the next season and deliver in similar role.

We don’t know what’s out there tbh. But he is deffinetly replaceable.

Look at clohesy this year.
Out of no where and dominating on the wing.

Ainsworth is averaging 15 touches a game and less then a goal and 0.4 goal assists

Exactly. Role players are out there, and some can turn into the one we need with a bit of luck.

But it is also a reason to not rely on our young players to take the role straight away. Balance is needed.

As mentioned, players like Johnston are a possibility. Still needs a lot more development to get to Ainsworth’s level though. We’d want someone to come in to take the role for 2 years at a high level, otherwise our team is just weaker.

I do think people overvalue Ben a bit here. E.g., just compared Ben and Johnston stats (3 games this year). Mostly close, disposal 15 vs 11, goals 0.9 vs 0.7, tackles 1.1 vs 2.3, score involvement 4.5 vs 4.7

If you don't like the contract and money is your driving force, see you later. We will need to spend a lot of money on Rowell, Mac.
