So well deserved. He has been a shining light since he debuted. Almost frightening to think what a full pre-season of weights and running will do to him.

Great news. Most thought he was unlikely to debut in his first season. even those who, like me, thought he might get a few games towards the end of the season, never imagined he would debut early, become a regular and earn a RS nomination.

The Dears have a history of defying expectations. Father, Paul, was mostly seen as a handy utility until he dominated a grand final and was rightly awarded the NSM. Uncle Greg has three premiership medallions and could have had a fourth but for injury.

Calsher could yet turn out to be the greatest of the Dears.

Suprised we don’t mention his basketball ability, he mentioned he had to choose between dragons and basketball and like a lot of kids now probably didn’t love footy as much. Make sense why his hands move so quickly

he interviewed so well. Didn't miss a beat. It was quite emotional there towards the end hearing him speak about his dad.

Watched the 360 interview- he did really well but also just seemed a genuine, likeable kid. Can't wait to see what the future holds for him.

Greg has two sons but I haven’t come across any news of them playing afl so seems unlikely of ever playing with Calsher.

Loved what he said about how being at Hawthorn has given him the opportunity to meet a whole bunch of people who knew his father, and how he’s able connect to the memory of his dad in new ways through hearing their stories of him.

Just saw the AFL360 interview what an impressive mature young man. You know he’s been brought up by a quality family in a great environment …… so important these days!

It goes to show you how important it has to be active in unearthing talent. It sounds like he was pretty ambivalent about football until very late and without the right pathways would have probably pursued something else and that talent form to waste.

It also shows that a little bit of nepotism and sentimentality can actually be beneficial. We kept in touch with the family and watched him at Beaumaris and Sandringham dragons even though the later didn't give him as much opportunity compared to their other key forwards.

No doubt if his name was Fred Jones he wouldn't have been drafted and probably just goes back and plays local footy.

Got his opportunity and is absolutely making the most of it. Next step is a few Coleman's and Norm Smith's to sit next his dad's and the Hawks museum.

The goal in the second quarter where Dear dived into a pack of players in the goal square, outmuscled and out read them for the ball, then got to his feet and kicked the goal was otherworldly.

The commentators said something like somehow it came to him and he kicked the goal. He reached in, and grabbed it then forced his way to his feet to kick a goal before anyone on the ground had even stood up.

Calsher is a next level talent, been telling my friends he's looking better than Buddy was in his first year. His junior career says that he has the talent and will to kick big bags of goals often.

You could easily argue he'd go number 1 in that draft based on output this year. It's a fairytale for the club and us that he's stepped in and looked the business pretty much from his first few Box Hill games.

Oh dear.
I was castigated early on in the Wizard thread for suggesting the possibility of better than Cyril.

But better than Buddy... oh mai!
