Autopsy Review: 2024 QF v. Geelong

My eldest son said he saw something on social media this morning about a guy who reckons he left at 3 qtr time.

Walking next to him was one J V Cahill.

I saw it here on BigFooty.

While it's tempting to tee off at all the players for last night, whether the supposed guns (Rozee, Butters) or the bottom enders (McEntee, F. Evans), every single one played badly. And not only that, but this is the fourth home final shellacking in a row where the entire team were unprepared for the intensity of finals.
This performance is entirely on the coach:
  • Our lack of intensity and motivation - Giving up at Half time was visible
  • Our 'gameplan' (for want of a better term), which has for the fourth year in a row completely flopped in finals. We got absolutely belted in the midfield, defence were a step behind all night, and the forwards were unable to provide any relief through a contested mark. Why our forward movement revolves around crumbing, when our small forwards are our weakest position (Rioli exception), is yet another indication our coach has no idea.

Bringing in Marshall, Sinn, whoever...would not have made a difference. This is a cultural issue that requires a new coach and assistant coaches (at the minimum) to rectify. And even then it will take years. Unfortunately we traded away our draft picks for another misguided tilt at a flag, when the key issue isn't personnel, but coaching related.

😳

Not sure if true or a wind up?
If the former - bloody hell.

We're now losing the respect of all of our past champions, who think that we are crapping on the Club's storied history of success and achievement 😡😡😡

To me, it doesn't get any more damning than that ☹️

I’ve found it:

Left at 3 quarter time (first time leaving a match early), walking next to me was John Cahill.

Another embarrassing history in the making performance. Thanks Ken and Co

Wow just wow. What the actual F***.

Shouldn't be surprised though but far out after a lot of talking that this side had a bit more ticker about them we've somehow managed to produce a more shameful performance than the 2021 prelim last night.

Absolutely no effort whatsoever. Literally everyone involved in that game should be ashamed of themselves.

But lets start with the main ones:
Coach - just an absolute pathetic excuse for a football coach, once again has studied all year and produced great results in his assignments only to absolutely shit the bed when sitting the exam at the end of the year. Can't handle pressure and this wears off on the players. One more week of this imbecile.

Captain - just a soft co*k of the highest order. Has plenty of talent but is clearly one of the most mentally fragile and weak players we have on the list, and this all trickles down to the rest of the group. We had no leadership at all out there last night. It was embarassing.

Vice Captain - questions need to be answered about his subbing off, things were already looking bad but it all went down hill from there. But he was barely sighted last night prior to the subbing. Now i really like the way he normally goes about it, definitely not a soft c*ck like Rozee but far out where was he when we needed him early in the game to set the tone.
If it turns out there is nothing wrong with his ribs too, that isn't going to look good for anyone involved in that decision to sub him off.
and then there is the rumours swirling that he doesn't want to be here beyond next year, and probably the only reason we ended up with a girls blouse as captain.

And our next leader in Houston is on the sidelines with a suspension and shopping himself around. As is the General Manager in Chris Davies.

This is a club that should be all in on a premiership this year and our key pillars are all over the shop.

Marshall would have been better than Dixon. Sinn is as bad as Lachie Jones.

Louie Mongomery was sitting near me, and he looked to be barracking for geelong.

Very odd considering his father and the fact he could get drafted to us

Take out the hiding we copped on the field the one Hinkley and his staff took from Chris Scott and the Geelong coaches was worse. They were coached brilliantly and their players executed.

JHF starting on the bench at the beginning of the first and second quarters gave Geelong control in the middle. JHF tried to change it when he came on but the damage was done. That one move gave Geelong momentum in the area of the game we were apparently stronger.

Playing Aliir on Cameron is up there with the JHF move, if not worse. That immediately wrecked our defence as Aliir couldn't play to his strengths. That was by Hinkley's design. Scott and the Geelong coaches would've been laughing in the box.

Then Geelong put Blicavs on Dixon and another tall agile defender on Ratugolea. They knew full well Dixon and Ratugolea weren't marking threats. They were there to 'compete' and bring the ball to ground. Geelong knew this and exploited it. Basically made the game a 18 v 16 contest when we kicked it long to those two cause they can't compete at ground level.

That's just three examples of how we were out coached on the night. But those three moves set the tempo of the game. Then you add Jordan Sweet's ruckwork which played into Geelong's hand and no one told him to stop hitting the ball into space or if they did he didn't listen.

Depends if we shifted our gameplan to accomodate Marshall - if it was the same kick long and compete, then probably not.

Sinn or Jones, doesn't really matter.

When you are getting spanked by 80 points, replacing a player or two isn't making a significant difference.

These two will always go hand in hand. There's not a defensive group in the AFL that could withstand the pressure our midfield routinely piles on our defenders in big games.
Agree to an extent, although Bergman wouldv'e played closer to Cameron than Aliir for sure.

But yep, without midfield/upfield pressure, it's far too easy to score. That's why it doesn't matter what players we added or dropped, the mentality of the group i.e. lack of chase and intent (which is largely dictated by the coach if he has been there for over a decade) meant we were never going to be able to win.

That's heartbreaking. Two guys as Port Adelaide as Port Adelaide gets. Imagine how that defeat has rippled through the old players.
Agreed so sad to see but if some of our past players have a voice and back up the supporters or Tredrea, this may have been over with a few years ago.

All the same a horrible situation.
