The issue of Joe departs is that it’ll actually take two players to fill his role and both still probably can’t do one job to the standard Joe does to both.

Of course we were going to face that issue at some point but I’m sure we still had 3-4 years to work that out so if it does happen, we’re on the back foot badly to find a solution with such limited options and resources to effect anything.

I guess it just shows how valuable he is which is why I’ve said for years that IDK why AA selectors and the talking heads have failed to see or appreciate what he does.

There genuinely isn't a replacement for Joe out there for his role - no other player comes close in the forward/ruck role and what he does around the ground.

So, so glad he got the flag and will be remembered rightly for clutch finals performances. And if he hangs it up, how amazing that his last touch of the footy was a goal to confirm a 10 goal grand final win.

Mentally I'm fairly sure what Joe gave us this year was all he had in him. He spent almost the whole season on the ground , barely any interchange time.

Now that he's had the exhilaration of the win and gets some time to relax and reflect if he has decided time's up he can always change his mind or look at things differently.

The best thing for Joe would be for everybody and especially the press to just leave him alone and if he hasn't decided to retire well and good and if he has give him the time to weigh it up further.

I'm not into looking for a walk up replacement if he does go. Give it a year to see how we go with what we have , we can mix it up in lots of ways , and then try and get someone we know we really need if things aren't working out.

Totally agree. Better to be targeted in recruiting than panic I think.

Joe is certainly a very unique individual. Rocking up at Fitzroy on his own while the boys came on the bus. Pretty clear he just went to bed after the game last night lol.
Joe was the only guy still in his footy gear at the after match function. Seemed to be enjoying himself.

The rest had all changed to some extent or another.

A decent article in the Herald Sun quoting Joe's dad - "He's that happy, how wont retire says dad" the article goes on quoting his father saying joe has the perfect work/life balance at the Lions. A young family and $1 million sitting on the table for 1 year - I somehow doubt he will retire this year but next year - yes.

The 2 players I noticed most devastated/emotional after the siren out on the ground were Prior and Dev, both were crying and visibly upset. Yes both were close and had good reason missing the team.

Dev and Prior are gone anyway

Schache. it's your time to prove the haters wrong. Reach out to the club...

Imagine that: Schache returns, kicks 40.5 and is the ruck forward heir to Joe, winning the 2025 and 2026 Norm Smith medals.

It would be an unbelievable call. Giving up ~ $1 million next year and the potential to be a double premiership player.

Not sure many players have ever given that up before? Alex Rance maybe - but he was injured...

Obviously never write off anything with Joe. But I hope we see him next year. Would be massive blow for us. At least if he could give us one last hurrah it'd give us the chance to be a bit more measured in finding his replacement.

I wonder if we could afford to pay for him to get a chopper ride to and from training from Byron a couple of times a week to save on his travel time😛

In hindsight you look at how average some of the Sydney players are and you wonder how they played as well as they did this year. Compared to us with guys like Cal, Fort, Fletcher and others standing up
I'm still in shock of how awful the Sydney players were. Like they're the best team all year, straight through to a granny and then give up after the 1st quarter in a GF.

I'd be saying to Joe, here's another $100k for the season and we'll see you in January. If we have to tread on gold coast and sydney academy zone toes by having a community camp in northern NSW or on the gold coast, then so be it.
