Non Lions Discussion 2024

It kinda feels like Collingwood knows their list is going to go into oblivion just as Tas comes in and are tilting for one more flag next year to offset the pain that it going to come.
Its definitely an interesting period for a few clubs. Do you try and bottom out as much as possible right now (ie like Richmond) or do you try and stay on top and ride through Tassie's earlier years (maybe be Geelong and just keep topping up)? Collingwood seem to want to stay up and not "waste" Daicos' time at the top. But they have so many mature guys holding things together. It could fall apart really badly at the wrong time

Imagine the outcry by the media if Collingwood get screwed over by Tasmania's entry, but there was hardly a discussion when GWS and GC has access to many first round picks when the Lions were terrible.

Personally, I think that some of the aura around Collingwood has diminished after they dumped several high profile players due to their salary cap mismanagement and Eddie no longer being the president. So much for "Side by side we stick together".

There was more complaining about how Richmond was impacted by GC/GWS than there ever was about how far back we slid over and over again in those years.

They'll keep trading I think and be back in no time. It's like the Perryman recruitment this year. They were not in picture initially, came along quietly and bang, he changed his mind from Adelaide or Port to Collingwood.

Same with Houston, McStay, Mitchell, list goes on.

Big clubs like Collingwood will always hold that advantage over plenty of other clubs. We right now are in a lucky position that we can trade in some big name and important players. That is a result of a combination of culture, ladder position, location and our facilities.
But putting aside my hate for Collingwood for a second, if you are Victorian playing interstate and interested to come home, the two clubs that would be on top of your list would have to be Collingwood and Geelong with Hawthorn a close third.

Probably because of how this impacted the AFL. Tigers have a lot of fair weather fans perhaps? The Lions just weren't that important to them with the new shiny kid on the QLD block

Zach Tuohy has detailed in his book how life was hell under Brendan Bolton. I remember when Carlton first got Bolton there was a series of videos Carlton produced going inside team meetings and pre-season training with a new coach. This board was a bit envious considering our own Leppa situation.

Thank f*** for Fagan is all I can say.

Great example of why you don't just throw out a coach as well. For every Fages out there, there's probably 100s of Brendon Bolton's.

Bolton asked for feedback, got it and then spat the dummy when he got it. Very poor leadership.

Reading the article what comes across is that Bolton had all the right concepts and ideas of what it takes to be professional player and successful team. He just wasn't able to implement those ideas into practice and implementing viable processes and systems.

Perfect example of the biscuit incident. Yes he wanted to demonstrate that diet, self discipline, attention to little details is an arsenal in the kit bag of a successful, professional player. However, belittling people in a public forum because they lacked these capacities is not a good leadership strategy.

I prefer the Fagan way of quite, disciplined, methodical, relationship forming, learning from your mistakes.

The only thing Fagan is missing from his kit bag is grabbing VFL players by the throat. Leppa had that one over him!

Stuff like this shows the difference between someone who is a good assistant versus the head coach. Bolton as you said had great ideas and probably could set up a good system but he needed someone to control, shape and help with delivering the message.

Same with Leppa shown again and again that he is a great assistant but failed at the top job.

I have similar thoughts that Voss and Buckley are the same. Brilliant football minds that make great assistant's but they just don't crack it in the top job

The evidence suggests that Dew would fall into this category at the moment.

I reckon the jury is still out on Vossy and that Buckley would be much better if he had a second chance.

The jury might be in on Voss at the end of next season. To be fair to him the Carlton list has been way overrated for years.

Tend to agree. An overrated list. A good midfield, 2 elite kpf and 1 decent kpf.

He's been there long enogh to shape the list to be in contention.

Cripps will be 30 next March and might start slowing down. I haven't seen Cerra produce a consistent season like Brayshaw or Serong yet - breaks down too often. Same with Zac Williams, a high profile restricted agency recruit but has been up n down in form, not to mention one season ruined by ACL in the middle. Martin came and gone, Doc with 3 ACLs and battling away. Mitch McGovern is another one who didn't kick on after landing in blues, lot of investment to get him across the line as well. They let Owies go which was puzzling but thanks to Eagles having a brainfade, Carlton have pick 3 in draft to look forward to.

In summary Carlton so far haven't had a solid win for all the recruiting energy spent in the last few years. I thought they'd get Houston and firm up rebounding from defense but looks like the club is already thinking beyond Vossy and starting to balance their investment in youth.
