Unofficial Preview Round 1, 2024: Bombers v Hawks, MCG 1:10pm Sat 16th March

D'Ambrosio for round 1? I know it's fun to build up our recruits, but he's a 20-year-old with under 20 games experience, who hasn't played so much as a praccy match in our colours. I really think it's a little early to suggest we're already pushing magnets around on his account. It's not that...

Unofficial Preview Round 1, 2024: Bombers v Hawks, MCG 1:10pm Sat 16th March

No matter your own age, calling someone who has a career and a family a "kid" is pretty strange. Whether they behave like a child is another matter, and can be true at any age. Scrim is a few years past that label, I don't think he'd like it applied to him.

Unofficial Preview Round 1, 2024: Bombers v Hawks, MCG 1:10pm Sat 16th March

His excellent footy in the middle of the year had been almost forgotten by our supporters. Fast, skillful, reliable and tough.

Unofficial Preview Round 1, 2024: Bombers v Hawks, MCG 1:10pm Sat 16th March

Scrimshaw is around the 8th oldest player on our list.

Unofficial Preview Round 1, 2024: Bombers v Hawks, MCG 1:10pm Sat 16th March

Can't see D'Ambrosio lining up round 1. Seamus, Serong, Finn and BMac are all backline options with more credits in the bank. People are saying we need Massimo's kicking skills in our backline, as if James Sicily and Karl Amon aren't already two of the best in the competition. Scrimshaw is no...

Unofficial Preview Round 1, 2024: Bombers v Hawks, MCG 1:10pm Sat 16th March

I'm beginning to see that it could be part of Maginness to play that medium/small defender role. Even when he has a run-with role, it rarely lasts the whole game. He needs a position if he's going to become more than a fringe role-player.

    Training 2024 Pre-Season discussion

Hello Catters, I come in peace. Just keen to know how young Emerson Jeka is getting on. He doesn't seem to be listed in the recovery group so that's a good sign already. If he stays fit then he's absolutely capable.

News Hawthorn in the media 2023

Nick Riewoldt said before Big Boy's last game that when the Saints leadership group heard the club had just traded out Ben McEvoy they couldn't believe it. On Reeves: Brett Ratten mentioned in his TH interview that when he coached against Hawthorn this year, the two facets that they couldn't...

Unofficial Preview Round 1, 2024: Bombers v Hawks, MCG 1:10pm Sat 16th March

Very good. Frost and Maginness are the ones the coaches may be tempted to crowbar into this side when considering the opposition. I also get the feeling that although Mackenzie plays a different position, he might have an impressive summer and demand selection ahead either Watson/Ginnivan.

Unofficial Preview Round 1, 2024: Bombers v Hawks, MCG 1:10pm Sat 16th March

Yep. I personally see CJ in that category too. Take him out and I think there's a bit of a speed deficit. Hope to see all three of them back training with the main group in January.

Unofficial Preview Round 1, 2024: Bombers v Hawks, MCG 1:10pm Sat 16th March

This is the team we named against Freo in the last game of 2022. My early stab at a best 22 for round one, with ins and outs: B: Jack Scrimshaw, James Blank, James Sicily HB: Karl Amon, Blake Hardwick, Jarman Impey C: Chankouth Jiath, Josh Ward, Conor Nash HF: Jack Gunston, Mitch Lewis, Connor...

Training 2024 Preseason reports and discussion

Don't think there's much to read into with Hardwick training forward, it's hardly a new thing. He started his career as a forward, swung forward a couple of times early last season and clearly the coaches would like to keep it up their sleeve throughout next year as well.

    Recommitted Bailey Smith [OOC 2024]

No fans ever accept when their era is over. Look at the hype around Dusty this off-season, Richmond fans think they're back on for flag number 4. I'm not saying Geelong can't improve next year, but this year was clearly not just an injury-riddled aberration. The champions are ageing, and older...

Player Watch Welcome to Hawthorn: Pick 23, Sam Butler

Agreed, Davey was a great player. Could move like lightning, and he was a run-down tackle specialist.. He used to play very well against us, too. As you can see from the highlights from his early years, he was very gifted. Unfortunately his gifts were absolutely wasted as he played the bulk of...

Player Watch Welcome to Hawthorn: Pick 23, Sam Butler

Breust, Roughead, Gunston Rioli, Franklin, Puopolo Puopolo the underrated component, bringing the tackling heat all day long and still a great user of the ball and gifted goal-sneak as well. Retrospectively, it's hard to understand how we dropped a single game in 2013. It reads like a fantasy...

Training 2024 Preseason reports and discussion

I think these are pretty fair calls. If you compare CJ's 2021 to Weddle's 2023, the stats suggest they are almost the same player. They are certainly uncannily similar in their athletic profile. Both of them have had poor moments as one-on-one defenders, but they are also both capable of big...

Absolutely, pure luck. Which is why clubs draft players randomly, why they rarely hold training sessions, because everything that happens on game day just comes down to chance.

Analysis Hawthorn rebuild: are they tanking?

If I had to bet on which of our two clubs are more likely to embarrass themselves by severely underachieving next year, I know where I'd put my money.

CH&DB: "We're going to start a footy podcast" Producer: "Do you know much about footy?" CH&DB: "Not exactly, but we have a lot of dirt on people who do". Producer: "Well, I guess people lap up just about anything these days, so let's give it a try"

Verbal Faux Pas, Jargon, Cliches, Boganisms, etc

Not for the faint-hearted, this link concerns one of footy's most controversial incidences. Some may blame the teleprompter, but in this incidence I'm inclined to suspect the orator.

Not as rough as it is for the newsreader. "One of footy's most controversial incidences". We'll never know what was written on that teleprompter.

Player Watch Welcome to Hawthorn: Pick 23, Sam Butler

Not to diminish Butler's time trial result, but 4x1km is different to what happens over the course of the 12-14km that players regularly run during games, let alone the 15-17km covered by the best runners.

Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn : Lloyd Meek

On the other other hand, his last game saw him rack up 26 disposals, 3 goals, 4 tackles and 41 hitouts in the VFL. I think I'll allow myself a sprinkle of optimism. Edit: worth noting that back in 2014 Ben McEvoy was a 25 year-old ruckman trying to get a game. He only made the gf side because...
