In late 2001, I registered on BigFooty. It's a great site, and in the last nearly 4 years I've posted plenty of drivel, lots of unintelligible gibberish and an occasional coherent point.
My user name came from 2 sources - the mighty Essendon football club, which remains my number 1 sporting...
A 17-year old kid, no matter how much potential he has, is not going to single-handedly turn around a club with a losing mindset. A club is far better off trying to finish the season on a positive note and building momentum for a better next season.
I have only once ever left the ground before the final siren. And that was because the lights had gone out and the final siren wouldn't go for another 3 days.
Should AFL members be given a bill for more on seasons when there are 2 prelim finals at the MCG? Which statistically will happen more often than seasons in which there are none.
Statistically, as long as Victorian clubs make up more than half the teams in the AFL, you're far more likely to get a free second prelim final than none.
Does anyone realise the SFS is double-booked on Sunday 28th August? The Souths v Cowboys NRL game is there at 3pm, and once that's finished they've got about 15 minutes to pull the league posts down, put soccer nets up, change the ground signage, repaint the ground, get the NRL crowd out and the...

She won them in some newspaper competition. Don't know anything more than that.
As for the crowd, the top levels up the Spiral Ramp of Death were closed off, but the bottom levels were well populated. Before the crowd number came up, I thought it looked a similar number to the Swans v...
A friend of mine won some free tickets to the Bulldogs v Broncos game at Telstra Stadium, and I ended up coming along on one of the freebies.
Wasn't a bad game, but the crowd was an absolute disgrace. Despite signs up around the ground and announcements on the scoreboard about a supporters'...
Not necessarily. It could also be argued that the current non-Victorian dominance is a phase that will pass. It was only 5 years ago that only 1 non-Victorian side made the top 8, and the top 4 were all Victorian clubs.
I can't see any reason why the current non-Victorian dominance is...
I was sitting just near the TV "box" at North Dalton on Saturday, and spoke to him briefly at half time. Forgot to ask his name - he's a big bloke, but no beard so he's not really an Osama look-alike. Don't know why Matt Gray's not calling any more.
BTW (spam alert), for those who read RWO...
I last wore my Essendon guernsey to a game at the 2002 elimination final at Docklands - I also had a jacket until the last minute when I took it off to wave it (as one does at Essendon v West Coast games). I was 31.
I prefer to wear an Essendon polo these days (I have a collection of about 5...
Any club that deliberately loses to get a priority pick has to be kidding themselves.
One promising 17 year-old, no matter how much talent he has, is not going to single-handedly turn around a struggling club with a losing attitude.
I'd far rather Essendon win our last 7 games this year. Even...
Maybe we can have "show 'em ugh, show 'em ugh" on the PA after every goal, and Dr Edelsten to arrive at the game in his pink helicopter...
Those days are gone, and thankfully they won't be back.
My rivalry round was:
Port v Adelaide
West Coast v Freo
Essendon v Collingwood
Carlton v Richmond
Sydney v Melbourne
Brisbane v Western Bulldogs
Geelong v St Kilda
Hawthorn v Kangaroos
My fixture requests:
12 games in Sydney - 3 Saturday night at Telstra Stadium, 3 Saturday night at...
If it comes down to interpretation, maybe the AFL could get around it by changing the definition of "preliminary final".
I've got an idea. Let's have a 5-week final 12 system. There'll be 6 finals in the first week, which will be called "preliminary finals", with the term "preliminary final"...
I don't see the point of grand final entertainment. There's already plenty of interest without it, and all the entertainers do is take up seats that participating club members miss out on.
It would take a miracle for the Bombers to make it from here. Still mathematically possible, but they were a rabble tonight (I can't believe I came down from Sydney to watch that rubbish) and I can't see it happening.
Roll on 2006.....
Was that the one where Backdoor Benny had 3 field goal attempts that hit the crossbar & then Canberra scored in the last minute to force extra time?
The AFL one was a classic. Hawthorn jumped Geelong early, but a spate of injuries meant they ran out of players and the Cats came storming home...
1988 was the worst one I remember. My biggest memory of that one was that just before it at the Seoul Olympics Ben Johnson, up to his ears in steroids, ran 9.79; which totally overshadowed the footy.
I had a look at the odds for this round - Essendon are backed into favouritism ($1.80) v Kangaroos ($2.00).
WTF? I'm in Victoria at the moment and will be at the game tomorrow, and give the Bombers a good chance - but the Kangaroos are way above us on the ladder, how the hell are Essendon...
