I'm with you Cos. Dont understand why people can't get their head around the concept. Their loss, its the fastest football code on the planet.
Would i prefer it to be Aussie Rules with a sherrin? of course, but that aint going to happen in the near future.
I think the AFL might have to do...

Palmer attempts to deride Aussie Rules to prop up his own soccer franchise on the GC.
This is the type of soccer mentality that turns fans of both codes off soccer in this country.
what a hypocrite seeing...
On the contrary, in tough times people tend to stay home for their entertainment. $80-100 a month for Foxtel is nothing when one night on the sauce can set you back that much.
Pay TV / HD / internet are all stay at home entertainment set to boom further.
At least the AFL has the...
AFL is to Commonwealth Bank as
NRL is to Suncorp.
:D
The credit crisis will make the strong stronger, the weak weaker. GC17 has the AFL.
Many sporting clubs on the edge will suffer, thinking NRL Sydney clubs, as they drop out, otherswill be ready to pick up the slack in time. A boost...
Agree Archer had to go, he had the personality of an axe handle and was as articulate as Geroge 'Dubya' Bush.
I dislike Thomas, I reckon he's an arrogant snob, but his views are sharp and controversial - the perfect fit for Footy Classified which had tended towards lame this year.

Agree there is some risk, is it Western Sydney or Canberra or Riverina?. However, if some Western Sydney games are played in Canberra it creates more opportunities for AFL fans in the ACT to get to games outside of just Swans games.
As we've seen with nroth QLd and the ACT, previously (60s...
There is a glaring omission in this article...
What are the AFL junior numbers in Sydney, growth, etc? The use of the irrelevant crowd figure instead of AFL junior numbers is telling.
A piece of News Ltd advertorial rubbish.

The bottom line is South Africa is showing rapid growth. It was good that both PNG and South Africa stepped up in the International Cup. These are the most likely countries to produce AFL players in the future.

The only thing that will save western Sydney team now is a relocation. (Bulldogs).
I want the AFL to expand, reckon Gold Coast is a good option, west sydney just too soon, not enough development.
Sydney fans arent big sports attenders like Melb. Look at the A League got 11K to the Sydney Fc...
pretty low crowd for a final at 20K. they got 24K to the freo game a couple of weeks ago.
Walls on Ch 10 said there are 4 reasons as advised to him by a good source:
1. poor economic climate in Sydney. (crowds down for all codes)
2. Wet weather last 2 days.
3. North Melb are a poor...
World Footy News is an excellent website I stumbled across it a few years ago and couldn't beleive the number of teams in the US for example.
I bet the site owners are happy to see International AFL footy getting some recognition in the mainstream press in Melbourne, even on Fox Sports.
The...
20-25 years, probably South Africa.
The same can be said for international rugby league - how long has the NSW/QLD RL Kangaroos been playing international rugby league for and they still beat virtually everyone.
At least our game is our own. :D

No question South Africa are the big improver in this year's International Cup. The AFL has been wise to target areas where no footy culture exists, this being the hardest obstacle to overcome, with straight out bias like the code cops in Sydney in particular.
Mike Sheahan article with quotes...
Senators playing to their constituents....good luck with that.
As for government money, the Feds tried to bully the AFL overs its drug policy by threatening to pull funding, when the Feds looked into it they found about 400K in funding for aboriginal programs. $400K out of a $300...
The AFL has the best conversion rate between TV ratings and fans then. Last week the AFL in Sydney drew 45,000 to the game agaisnt Geelong, that was bigger than all three NRL games. Three times a as big as the soccer game between the Big 2 Melb and Sydney in the opening round.
Those TV...
I think the AFL has given the 2008 IC far more coverage than the 2005 event. I reckon it has got it about right this time. Just nurture it along and not make any outlandish claims, dont let Australia or Australians play, at least not yet.
Given PNG and South Africa are developing along with...

p.s. away strips very good.
Very early days. There is some tension between the GAA and the AFL. I bet a lot of the Irish lads feel they are betraying their code by even trialling. This will take time, but every Irish player that gets into the AFL trailblazes for others. Dont also ignore the International Rules series and...
the degrees of separation argument is a good one. AFL clubs with Irish players should be engaging where possible the county club the player played for in Ireland.

For starters the economy of the AFL is much bigger and more influential than hurling. Does hurling have a $780M TV rights deal?
Your simply not getting the opportunity. You have to try and see how it goes. There is no guarantee of success.
The world is changing, cultural lines are...
There is no doubt the US is a huge market and defintely agree with your assessment of soccer and rugby fans and why they find it hard to relate to. Soccer big on foot skills, rugby big on ball retention.
However, if you have a read of the USfooty website it gives you some insight into how...
Quite a bitter post.
That Socceroos crowd of 70K would be repeated anywhere in Australia. Its not a Sydney thing, If the game was in Melbourne the same size crowd would have attended. It is no reflection on the support for the Swans or AFL in Sydney.

Plenty of replies from those who don't want it to work. Well the AFL is going to India anyway, sorry they didn't listen. :thumbsu:
The cricket connection is the key, followed by grass roots campaigns. Parts of India are not unlike parts of South Africa, there is no entrenched football code...
