With a draw against the Warriors, we turned our sights to the Wonders. It was going to be a challenge to get the team up for going again against an opponent they were, well, let's be honest, less than enthusiastic about being within 1km of. So I thought long and hard about how to mix things up and get the team interested. And a light bulb moment! Mix things up.... mix positions up... use that interchange bad boy like it's tap water.

I was confident; but would we actually get the chocolates?

[Round 8], Conditions for this match - CLOUDY

With a cloudy day ahead of us at The Colosseum, I was looking forward to some good numbers and clean play on the field.

The first quarter was less than stellar, however. The Wonders got first blood through their ruckman, NinjaSwan. I spared no time in putting my shuffling the deck chairs into action and benched Strigoi for BringBackTheAnchor in response, and we soon responded with a major through Braklet. Experts say the ruck interchanging had nothing to do with that goal but I question their expert-ness. From here we traded blows before the Wonders edged away to hold an 18 point advantage at quarter time.

Matt_352 got us starting well in the second quarter for his second major. The Wonders hit back with a couple of their own before Matt_352 and Braklet once again kept the scoreboard ticking over. At one point we had reduced the margin to just 5 points the Wonders way, before they kicked a few, to my chagrin, in red time to go into half time with a 23 point advantage.

I had successfully performed 8 (count them, eight) interchanges in that second quarter. Now some would say it clearly didn't work as we had conceded even more by half time. But again, do these people even appreciate the cognitive exercise one gets from playing Animal Crossing?

Well, I for one think it was to pay off. In the third term, we burst out of the blocks with goals to Hatchy1992 (x2), Chief and Knifey Spoony. The term was then a bit of an arm wrestle until T2B_ (finally) kicked a major, after having not being able to buy a goal last week. The Wonders managed a solitary goal through Brenton Davy but Ljp86 and DragoDelph closed out the term for us with majors of their own, giving us a 10 point advantage. We had another 5 interchanges that term, just FYI.

Realising my 3D chess version of coaching was paying off, we had just the one interchange in the final term with Strigoi taking ruck rover in exchange with T2B_ and the team settled nicely. DJ75 and Knifey Spoony kicked off proceedings to get us out to 22 points early in the quarter and although the Wonders did manage 2 goals through Brenton Davy, Sswans2011 and LukeParkerno1, we had Ashman OG contribute with 2 goals of his own and DragoDelph joined in with a major as well. All in all, we rolled home with the win for a final margin of 22 points.

After a difficult start, we cruised home nicely and I felt my job was safe for another week at least and that would surely be the end of all that nonsense about my interchange tactics.

Defender highlights: I'm a big believer in good defense so my shifting a lot of the team into defensive spots at some point or another during my interchange extravaganza definitely highlighted this. Unfortunately it also made it hard to write this section. Anyway, Blaze Storm (18d, 5m) was once again very solid across CHB, while BringBackTheAnchor (18d, 2m) also contributed strongly deep in defense after an early ruck stint.

Midfield highlights: DragoDelph (27d, 6m, 5t, 2g, 1b) was unstoppable and took near total control of the centreman position. He had great assistence with the venerable Pie 4 Life (23d, 3m, 7t) and Bradesmaen (29d, 8m). Chief (17d, 10ho, 2g, 1b) was largely our ruck for this game and acquitted himself very well in an unfamiliar position.

Forward highlights: We would look to other avenues this week as Bonz was thrown around during the interchanges, even ending up deep in the D50 at one point. Knifey Spoony (6d, 3g, 3b) was well and truly going for the Subway vouchers and caused some havoc up forward, along with his partner in crime, Hatchy1992 (5d, 2g, 1b). Matt_352 (15d, 5m, 4g) on a half forward flank however was very efficient and kicked a bag. Assisting all these guys though was DJ75 (19d, 5m, 1g) who really dominated his opposition and kept the ball moving across our F50 arc.

It had been a rough week for yours truly. With an inquiry looming in regards to interchange-gate (a load of nonsense by the way, likely provoked by an overly fat avocado with an agenda - note to self: maybe delete that last part before publishing?) and worst of all, nearly dropping my Nintendo Switch down the toilet, a win was surely the thing that would soothe the Dragons faithful and ease my tensions.

But the Bears, besides being smelly, are not pushovers, so could it be done?

[RD 9], Conditions for this match - WARM

Although the Bears got first blood through Cap, we responded not long after through (guess who...) Bonz. Cap hit back for the Bears but then our Dragons put the pedal to the floor with goals to Strigoi, Hatchy1992, Bradesmaen, Bonz (again) and DJ75. The Bears did manage another major in red time, but we went into quarter time with a 21 point lead.

Things certainly kept going our way in the second term, as we kicked the first four goals through Knifey Spoony, DJ75, Strigoi and Bradesmaen, all in the first ten minutes, giving us a lead of 46 points. Late in the term the Bears did manage to kick three goals in a row, bringing back the margin somewhat, before T2B_ managed to move his bulk beyond the centre square and nail a goal before the half time siren. 31 points in front at the major break, we could not complain at all.

The team continued to cruise to victory hereafter. Although somewhat trading blows at either end, we would ultimately be more accurate. DragoDelph continued his fine form and nailed two goals from the midfield, as did Chief who had shifted further up the ground. Braklet also chipped in with a single, as did Strigoi for her third goal of the match. We had a game high margin of 58 points at three quarter time so at this point I kissed my Switch and resumed Animal Crossing.

With that in mind the final term was a bit of a blur but basically the two sides traded goals in junk time, with the Bears slightly reducing the final margin to 47 points. Here Chief managed to kick another two goals (4 goals for the match if you don't mind!) and Bonz managed another for the match also.

I breathed a sigh of relief and prepared the deodorisers for the team, knowing that while they may have held the Bears at more than arms length all day, the smell is really rather quite pervasive.

Defender highlights: This really wasn't a game for stat highlights when it came to the defense and to be fair, the team was in such control overall this isn't too surprising. Still, Ashman OG (8d, 1m, 1t) mightn't light up the stats sheet, but he absolutely destroyed his direct opponent. HawkAussie (18d, 5m) off the half back flank was also handy.

Midfield highlights: DragoDelph (27d, 4m, 2g) was once again taking control of the centre and hit the scoreboard. Pie 4 Life (17d, 13t) was an absolute wrecking ball too and made some Bears regret taking the field on the day. Strigoi (13d, 14ho, 3t, 3g) was Strigoi and no doubt will have people once again questioning why I ever move her. Knifey Spoony (26d, 5m, 1g, 1b) now reinvigorated after his Subway vouchers enjoyed some time up on the wing.

Forward highlights: This was an interesting game where we didn't rely too much on our bonafide forwards themselves. Bonz (4d, 3g) kept his Fred medal count ticking over but was not so overly relied on this week. With the mids kicking goals our forwards could relax and watch the goals fly over their heads, but Chief (6d, 4g) enjoyed a move up onto the HFF kicking himself a nice bag and showing he sure doesn't kick like a back pocket.

Each season the leading goalkicker at the Dragons is awarded a medal in recognition of their efforts: the Hatchy1992 Medal! Hatchy1992 is a former Dragons skipper, and has kicked 310 goals for the club, which ranks him third on our all-time goalkickers list. He is also one of only (now) four Fred Medallists at the club, following his superb Season 24 effort which also saw him named in the All-SFA team.

This season the Dragons played 17 home and away matches and 2 finals matches, and the Hatchy1992 Medal was won once again by star full forward Bonz. Bonz was elite this season as he led the race for the Fred Medal from the get-go, particularly following a massive 11 goal haul against the Bombers. After a slight stumble near the finish line, Bonz tore it up in the last round of the season to finish on the top of the pack to claim his first Fred Medal - the fourth for the Dragons. Amazing. He finished on 79 goals, including a mammoth nine during the finals series. His efforts were so impressive that he was named in the All-SFA team for the THIRD season in a row. An incredible performance from the goal square!

Forward pockets Knifey Spoony and Hatchy1992 also had great seasons and finished on the podium with 30 and 34 goals respectively.

Coach's thoughts:

Coming off a nice win versus the smelly Bears, spirits were high as we prepared to face the Demons. A good win does a solid for team morale, but it's also useful to get the powers that be off my back somewhat. You might think with an inquiry breathing down one's neck and all eyes firmly on your match-day antics, that a coach might be very, very conservative with interchanges.

Well my tactic is the opposite. I am a master coach with a premiership to my name and given time people will come to appreciate my tactics, even if much of it involves throwing name magnets around the whiteboard with my eyes closed. Oh yeah, so the Demons match. Let's dive in.

Round 10, Conditions for this match - CLOUDY

The team ran out into cloudy weather, not too hot, just very mild weather so a game of high stats and clean Qooty was on the cards.

We didn't get the fast start we hoped for, with the Demons getting a major within less than a minute into the match. We hit back through a classy finish from onballer Pie 4 Life not long after, then the two sides traded behinds and eventually a goal apiece, before unfortunately the Demons managed to hit their stride midway through the quarter, piling on three goals in a row before a late goal to Hatchy1992 brought the margin back to 11 points the Demons way at the first break.

The second term we fared a bit better, thanks to the trio of DragoDelph, Bradesmaen and Knifey Spoony all scoring goals within the first 5 minutes. The Demons did finally get a sausage roll back through, well, sausageroll to bring scores back to level before Hatchy1992, obviously wanting in on the Subway voucher action, kicked his second major. The term was ended with double majors to Ljp86 for us and to sante for the Demons. All in all we went into the major break with a 6 point advantage.

The third term turned out to be a mixture of some small optimism but once again reflected the relative evenness of the two sides. We did actually get out to a 15 point advantage at one point before the Demons wrestled it back, ultimately heading into three quarter time with a 3 point lead over us. This quarter alone saw three lead changes, but this was nothing compared to what was to come.

Mere seconds into the last term, Braklet smashed one home from CHF. Not to be outdone, the Demons managed three goals while a couple of goals from T2B_ and a single from Strigoi kept us hanging with them with mere points in the margin. The scores were once again level somewhere midway through the term, but sadly this is where our hopes started to dwindle. The Demons kicked another couple of goals to get it out to a 15 point margin their way before Bonz found his kicking boots and managed a couple of majors late in the game to give us a sniff, but in the end Mount Buller had the answers and ultimately ran out 15 point victors. That last term saw 7 lead changes, so we were always a chance and no one could say it wasn't an entertaining game, but unfortunately it wasn't our day for the choccies.

Defender highlights: With what amounted to a shootout, it might fair to say it was a bit of a dirty day for our defenders, at least defensively speaking. serial_thrilla (14d, 3m) managed a bit of ball despite being manhandled deep in defense and Maylandsman (14d, 3m, 2t) enjoyed a run across half back to good effect.

Midfield highlights: In what is becoming a bit of a trend, DragoDelph (30d, 9m, 2g) had some massive numbers. It was Blaze Storm (23d, 8t, 1g) however, rotating up from half forward, who beat his direct opponents in between driving them into the dirt that was the surprise package for the day in the middle. Ljp86 (22d, 6m, 3t, 2g) was damaging on the wing, doing what he's famous for.

Forward highlights: Our full forward was a little off this week, so it was up to Hatchy1992 (3d, 2m, 3g) to kick a mini bag and it's fair to say he was very efficient with his touches. His partner in crime Knifey Spoony (3d, 3g) was likewise efficient, getting a goal for each of his three and only kicks. Our aforementioned FF in Bonz (5d, 1m, 2g, 3b) was not at his best this week and struggled with his radar, but still managed 5 scoring shots and kept the opposition defenders honest.

Coach's thoughts:

The week in the lead-up to facing the Furies on the Qooty field was an interesting one. Despite the repeated educational seminars on being QovidSafe, the team seemed to largely throw caution to the wind and insist on spending ample time with the Furies during the week, partying and sharing animes and memes and whatever else the young people do these days. In fact, word on the street is the #grandfinalrematch week was like none ever seen before in the history of Sweet, and even though many other teams from the outside looking in didn't seem to condone it, our Dragons and the Furies seemed to have the time of their lives. I have to commend both teams on this, even if I didn't understand half of what was going on.

All that said, a game of Qooty still took place and despite the week long love-in, someone had to run out the victor...

[Round 11], Conditions for this match - RAINY

The Qooty gods were not so kind this week in terms of weather, as it was a rainy miserable day out there. Usually one could be forgiven for thinking this would result in a scrappy, hard to watch game but there was a pleasant surprise here - the game itself held up well, with plenty of scoring and some decent stats all round, which I guess was fitting for the week that was just had.

That said, it did take a good 8 minutes for a goal to be registered - thanks to one Pie 4 Life. The sides traded goal for goal for the next few scores, with the aforementioned Pie 4 Life snagging another and the big man Bonz kicking two of his own. We went into quarter time with a decent lead of 11 points.

For the second term, things started to take off for us. Although the Furies did manage one goal through Shadow Man, it was all the Dragons way. We kicked majors through Hatchy1992, Strigoi, Blaze Storm and yet another two goals from Bonz, which had us sitting very comfortably heading into the main break with a 38 point advantage. We're known for being a fast, high scoring side on our day and it was pleasing we were managing this in the wet.

The Furies hit back with an early major in the third quarter, and it took us a few minutes more to get one through the big sticks, but Knifey Spoony finally slotted another. T2B_, Hatchy1992 and Ljp86 all managed another major each, giving us a (then) game high advantage of 60 points, before the Furies did manage to kick three goals just before three quarter time.

In the final quarter, we re-applied the throttle and revved our engines high, defying the wet conditions as our midfield went to work and gave our forwards silver service. One of these said midfielders, DragoDelph, kicked off the quarter with a goal of his own almost instantly while Knifey Spoony, Bonz and Hatchy1992 all contributed up forward to give us a match high margin of 82 points and we were cruising. The Furies did snag two late majors through Rioli8217, but ultimately we ran out 71 point victors.

Despite the result, there were no sore losers. In fact the Furies happily went off with the team for a final hurrah at Crocodile Drunkees and I was left shaking my head as to just what this week had been, but all that said, as a coach I couldn't be prouder. A great Qooty performance and despite a somewhat shaky start to the year and a few disappointing results, one thing is clear: The Dragons are still a very, very good Qootball side.

Defender highlights: Matt_352 (4d, 1ff) might have only had the 4 touches, but defensively he was incredibly sound - playing 100% game time on the Furies CHF in Pickitt and keeping him to just 2 touches and no scoring shots. serial_thrilla (5d, 1m) was also very solid on the Furies FF in U2Tigers, limiting him to just 1 goal. Ashman OG (8d) also committed himself well; while his opponent in Dominic03 got a bit of ball, when matched up on TJASTA he kept the latter to absolute donuts (in every stat!).

Midfield highlights: DragoDelph (24d, 6m, 2t, 1g) once again put on a clinic - while not the highest midfielder in terms of fantasy points on the day, he torched his direct opponent in crazywildhorse. T2B_ (19d, 10t, 1g, 1b) had a tough day limiting his opponent in ImissFrosty, but was still solid and gave plenty of tackling power. Ljp86 (19d, 5t, 1g, 2b) was also very effective on the wing, offensively and defensively.

Forward highlights: After a quiet week in the previous game vs the Demons, Bonz (10d, 5g, 5b) was back somewhere close to his best, amassing a huge 10 scoring shots, just lacking a bit of accuracy on a wet day. Hatchy1992 (4d, 1m, 3g, 1b) was once again efficient with his touches and his partner in crime, Knifey Spoony (8d, 1m, 2g, 6b) did enough to get a Subway voucher, but amassed a super impressive 8 scoring shots himself.

The award for the best first year player at the Dragons is the Blaze Storm Medal, and for the first time in a few seasons there was actually some heated competition for this award! Rookie Nool Carpenna was a little on the quiet side in his first season, but his fellow rooks DragoDelph and Braklet more then made up for it as they contributed literally thousands of match thread posts for the club and were key contributors on the field as we marched towards our minor premiership.

Braklet joined the ranks of the Americans on our team list this season, and he fitted into the club seamlessly. As did DragoDelph, and the level of corruption received from his teammate Bonz was clear to see. As the club’s centre and centre half forward, both had claimed key positions in the team’s starting XX by season’s end – and splitting the two of them for this award was painstaking.

In the end though, an EKA Award and Rising Star Award for Drago were too difficult to ignore, and I am proud to announce that the Season 33 Blaze Storm Medal winner to be DragoDelph. Congrats mate, it is well deserved – and you can add even more value to the victory knowing that you had such brilliant competition from the league’s EKA and RS runner up Braklet!​

After the party time that was #grandfinalrematch versus the Furies, one could be forgiven for thinking the follow up week would perhaps be a little on the relaxing side. Turns out that's exactly the case and it took me all but taking out a literal whip to get the Dragons players to actually get out on the training track! Coming up against a side for the second time this season didn't help things either, that being the Roys this time.

Still, we had a game of Qooty to win and points to play for so this was anything but a dead rubber on the field...

The Dragons headed out into cloudy weather to face their elderly opposition. Good weather for accumulating the Qootball for sure, whether you're geriatric or not.

Bonz was, naturally, the one to kick us off within the first two minutes of play. The Roys hit back with a goal and both sides traded behinds for a while before Pie 4 Life slammed through a goal midway through the quarter. Decent conditions didn't help anyone's accuracy however as more behinds were traded until Bonz yet again got a late goal, while the Roys did as well, giving us just a 2 point advantage at Quarter Time.

The first half of the second term was a very even contest as the sides traded goals, rather than behinds (mercifully, for the spectators) and the margin wasn't moving too much. Braklet was amongst these early goals as well as Bradesmaen doing his thing running down the wing (and thankfully, the Qootball didn't mysteriously disappear this time). We then proceeded to kick another 3 behinds in a row before Strigoi thankfully slotted one as we headed towards red time. A late goal by Knifey Spoony before Half Time gave us a handy 21 point margin over the Roys.

The third term was by no means terrible but some plucky play by the Roys and some missed opportunities by us meant the margin didn't move by much yet again, albeit it did increase. Bonz flexed his muscles with 2 goals for the term as well as a behind, while Blaze Storm and Ashman OG kicked a major each. The Roys as mentioned did manage a couple crafty goals, meaning we went into the final break with a 29 point advantage. Very, very handy but we certainly felt it could have been more.

Still, if we were frustated with inaccuracy it was about to get worse in the final term. Whether it be genuine fatigue or the players still distracted by #grandfinalrematch, we managed to kick 2.9 for the final quarter! Our only 2 goals came late in the term as well, by virtue of Ashman OG and Blaze Storm. All in all, we ran out 42 point victors, and yes, we held up pretty well defensively to be fair, but we knew the margin and percentage boost could have been quite a bit more.

Alas, a good win is a good win!

Defender highlights: Stoods (15d, 5m) was quite prolific off half back and kept opponent Elmer_Judd goalless even if the latter got a bit of ball as well. Chief (9d, 1m) mightn't trouble the stat sheet too much but he was very strong defensively and didn't give an inch.

Midfield highlights: T2B_ (19d, 15t, 2b) seemed to be playing angry this week, amassing a whopping 15 tackles and somehow dodging jailtime for piledriving old Roys, combining well with Pie 4 Life (25d, 6t, 1g, 1b) who was pretty handy in the rough stuff as well. Bradesmaen (31d, 6m, 1g) was, well, Bradesmaen and just owned the wing. Honorable mention to HawkAussie (33d, 6m) who also gave ample drive after moving up from the backline during the match.

Forward highlights: Bonz (8d, 4g, 4b) was Bonz, bar being one of the inaccurate culprits but scored a small bag nevertheless from his eight disposal for eight shots performance. Blaze Storm (17d, 6m, 2g, 2b) was also very handy forward of centre and finally, in one of the more dominant yet what-could-have-been performances - DJ75 (24d, 15m, 5b) got massive amounts of ball and marked literally everything and had 5 shots on goal, but didn't kick through the big sticks for any of them! Nevertheless, a superb outing at CHF.

It was a fantastic season for the Dragons in the Mobbs Medal votes, with a couple of our players in the hunt for the coveted award during parts of the count. T2B_ had a massive run of games through the middle of the season to finish in 7th place on 17 votes. Pie 4 Life was the star of the show for us though, and he finished on 21 votes - a heartbreaking single vote behind the winner damicky. Bonz and Strigoi both received votes on multiple occasions as they finished on 9 votes, @DargoDelph received the first votes of his career as he nabbed a pair of votes in his debut season, whilst Ljp86 wound back the clock to add another vote to his career tally. Congrats to all Dragons who received votes!​

Bonz was, naturally, the one to kick us off within the first two minutes of play. The Roys hit back with a goal and both sides traded behinds for a while before Pie 4 Life slammed through a goal midway through the quarter. Decent conditions didn't help anyone's accuracy however as more behinds were traded until Bonz yet again got a late goal, while the Roys did as well, giving us just a 2 point advantage at Quarter Time.

The first half of the second term was a very even contest as the sides traded goals, rather than behinds (mercifully, for the spectators) and the margin wasn't moving too much. Braklet was amongst these early goals as well as Bradesmaen doing his thing running down the wing (and thankfully, the Qootball didn't mysteriously disappear this time). We then proceeded to kick another 3 behinds in a row before Strigoi thankfully slotted one as we headed towards red time. A late goal by Knifey Spoony before Half Time gave us a handy 21 point margin over the Roys.

The third term was by no means terrible but some plucky play by the Roys and some missed opportunities by us meant the margin didn't move by much yet again, albeit it did increase. Bonz flexed his muscles with 2 goals for the term as well as a behind, while Blaze Storm and Ashman OG kicked a major each. The Roys as mentioned did manage a couple crafty goals, meaning we went into the final break with a 29 point advantage. Very, very handy but we certainly felt it could have been more.

Still, if we were frustated with inaccuracy it was about to get worse in the final term. Whether it be genuine fatigue or the players still distracted by #grandfinalrematch, we managed to kick 2.9 for the final quarter! Our only 2 goals came late in the term as well, by virtue of Ashman OG and Blaze Storm. All in all, we ran out 42 point victors, and yes, we held up pretty well defensively to be fair, but we knew the margin and percentage boost could have been quite a bit more.

Alas, a good win is a good win!

Defender highlights: Stoods (15d, 5m) was quite prolific off half back and kept opponent Elmer_Judd goalless even if the latter got a bit of ball as well. Chief (9d, 1m) mightn't trouble the stat sheet too much but he was very strong defensively and didn't give an inch.

Midfield highlights: T2B_ (19d, 15t, 2b) seemed to be playing angry this week, amassing a whopping 15 tackles and somehow dodging jailtime for piledriving old Roys, combining well with Pie 4 Life (25d, 6t, 1g, 1b) who was pretty handy in the rough stuff as well. Bradesmaen (31d, 6m, 1g) was, well, Bradesmaen and just owned the wing. Honorable mention to HawkAussie (33d, 6m) who also gave ample drive after moving up from the backline during the match.

Forward highlights: Bonz (8d, 4g, 4b) was Bonz, bar being one of the inaccurate culprits but scored a small bag nevertheless from his eight disposal for eight shots performance. Blaze Storm (17d, 6m, 2g, 2b) was also very handy forward of centre and finally, in one of the more dominant yet what-could-have-been performances - DJ75 (24d, 15m, 5b) got massive amounts of ball and marked literally everything and had 5 shots on goal, but didn't kick through the big sticks for any of them! Nevertheless, a superb outing at CHF.

Coach's thoughts:

Well another week passed and after threatening to break the record for behinds kicked in a match but still otherwise having a great win over the old Roys, it was time to face the Gumbies.

We've been in decent form lately, besides the odd blip here and there, so we would go in with plenty of confidence. That said, there's still been a bit of chatter about my treatment of our star ruck and interchanges. So I thought I would mix things up a bit this week. See if you can guess who was blessed with the hard pine of reflection? I'll give a hint - they lead our goal kicking.

[RD 13], Conditions for this match - RAINY

Things were looking pretty wet and grim on the Qooty field. It also looked a little grim when the Gumbies slammed through a goal courtesy of their full forward Barrybran within the first couple of minutes, and it took until 6 minutes in until we got a goal thanks to Hatchy1992. The Gumbies managed another few majors in the next 10 minutes before Knifey Spoony and T2B_ hit back with 6 pointers of their own. We went into Quarter Time with an 8 point deficit, which may not be much but in these sorts of conditions you don't want to get much further behind.

We started off a bit better in the second term with Pie 4 Life kicking truly. The Gumbies would respond with a couple of goals before we hit back with an impressive 3 goals in a row thanks to paraaaa, Blaze Storm and Braklet. Regardless of bad weather, at least we seemed to be a bit more accurate this week! At Half Time we then led by one straight goal.

In the third term unfortunately some of our inaccuracies did creep back in. Nevertheless, in amongst the behinds we actually did get 3 goals all scored by Hatchy1992 who was enjoying his sudden move to full forward (that's right for those playing at home - Bonz was the lucky one to chillax on the pine this week!). The Gumbies did manage a major of their own but we closed out the quarter with a goal each to Ljp86 and paraaaa, giving us a very, very handy lead of 34 points.

The final quarter was perhaps one better forgotten. Largely a mudfest with sloppy skills from both sides resulting in very little actual scoring. We probably took our foot off the pedal a little too as the Gumbies did manage 3 goals in the term, reducing the margin down to 15 points around the 15 minute mark, but minutes later the last goal of the match was kicked courtesy of our own T2B_, so in the end we ran out 22 point winners.

Not a game for a highlight reel perhaps, but I was proud of the Dragons' effort and steely resolve!

Defender highlights: The big Chief (14d, 4m) was extremely sound in defense and got a good amount of ball himself in trying conditions. serial_thrilla (9d, 4m) at full back kept his opponent in Barrybran to just 2 goals and 4 touches, while Stoods (12d, 5m) was also solid defensively while also providing some drive from half back.

Midfield highlights: The Bash Brothers in T2B_ (24d, 7t, 2g) and Pie 4 Life (22d, 8t, 1g, 3b) were once again a powerful combination while also hitting the scoreboard. Bradesmaen (22d, 2m, 3t) continued his good form on the wing even in rough conditions showing his class.

Forward highlights: It was slim pickings for the forwards this week and admittedly conditions didn't help. With my playing shuffle the deck chairs this week on our full forward, the one to spring up with a bag this week was actually Hatchy1992 (6d, 4g, 2b) who took the opportunity by the scruff of the neck.

So another of the reverse fixtures rolls around and we came up against the mob where I have to spend half the week trying to pry serial_thrilla away from Marlowe and try to get him to do some actual training. Yes, that's right, the Gold City Royals, allegedly captained by PMBangers.

Our form has come together at the right time of the season but the Royals have had a bit of a habit of spoiling our parties, so would we manage to snag another win this time?

[RD 14], Conditions for this match - WARM

Well it was a warm day as the Dragons ran out to meet the Royals. Gold City got the first two goals to kick off proceedings before our co-captain in T2B_ hit back with a major, followed by his partner in crime in Pie 4 Life and then the ever Subway voucher seeking forward pocket in Knifey Spoony (twice!). Likely wanting in on the Subway action, Hatchy1992 kicked a snag next. DJ75 and Bonz (x2) followed up to have us sitting pretty early although the Royals managed two late goals before quarter time, leaving a margin 25 points our way at the first break.

Things were a little more even in the second term. Hatchy1992 secured his voucher with a second goal to his name while Blaze Storm and Bonz got in on the action as well. The Royals managed 3 goals of their own throughout the term meaning at Half Time we had a slightly adjusted margin of just 24 points the Dragons way.

The trend continued quite remarkably in the third term. DragoDelph (x2), and T2B_ once again got amongst the goal scorers while the Royals' CakeEater proved to be a bit of a thorn in our side snagging two goals along with a single to Marlowe which meant that at 3 Quarter Time we had a margin of... 23 points our way. Surely this meant we were on the way to a 22 point victory if things continued?

Well wishful thinking as the final quarter proved to be a bit of a heart stopper and I even found myself Qoogling to see if I could sue the team in case of a heart attack. The first half of the last term was all Royals as they piled on 4 goals, 3 behinds and actually took the lead by 4 points. Bonz, HawkAussie (enjoying a stint in the ruck) and DragoDelph all kicked a major each to get us back out to a 14 point margin as red time neared. The Royals however were not done with yet, as they scored another 2 goals and a minor score to get the score to just 1 point our way.

However, the Dragons held firm and a massive sigh of relief was breathed by both myself and my Switch which had nearly got clenched into oblivion during that suspenseful last quarter. Still, a win is a win!

• In what became a bit of a clinic, T2B_ gave The Filth Wizard a lesson. - 97m from 2 to 99.

Defender highlights: serial_thrilla (9d, 5m) destroyed his direct opponent at Full Back and got a decent amount of ball himself, while Stoods (19d, 4m, 3t), Matt_352 (15d, 6m, 3t) and paraaaa (15d, 1m) all battled hard defensively and got plenty of the pill as well.

Midfield highlights: The Bash Brothers in T2B_ (25d, 6t, 2g) and Pie 4 Life (29g, 4t, 1g) were AGAIN a powerful combination while also hitting the scoreboard. DragoDelph (17d, 5m, 3g, 1b) once again showed his craft around goals as he efficiently hit the scoreboard playing as a centreman while HawkAussie (16d, 7t, 8ho, 1g) battled bravely against the rampant Royals ruck in GreyCrow after one of my famous "ruck shuffles".

Forward highlights: Bonz (7d, 4g, 3b) was doing Bonz things, just lacking a little accuracy, while the two opposing pockets in Knifey Spoony (3d, 2g, 1b) and Hatchy1992 (2d, 2g) once again made it clear they were only in it for the Subway vouchers but kicked multiple goals nonetheless.

The award formerly known as the Captain's Encouragement Award is generally reserved for a Dragons player who shows signs that they are on the cusp of becoming a big name in the Sweet FA. They may have been semi-engaged in match threads in the past, but they are now beginning to stretch their wings, and have the personality and skills to become a household name in Sweet. Previous winners include current Dragons Stoods, Bradesmaen, Strigoi and Blaze Storm, but legendary Dragons players such as Andonis1997 and Volbeat have previously won in their early years. In recognition of a current Dragons Life Member, it has been decided to tweak the name of this award, and it shall from now on be known as the Knifey Spoony Footlong Encouragement Award.

The player who receives the Footlong Encouragement Award in Season 33 is our centre half forward Braklet.

As mentioned in the Blaze Storm Medal announcement, Braklet has fitted in seamlessly at the Dragons. As he has gained confidence and an appreciation of the history and intricacies of the league he has also begun to branch out and make himself known in the world of Sweet Media and in the other distant corners of the league. He has built himself a reputation already, and appears to be building a solid network of friends across many teams (the Roys and Bombers in particular seem to be big fans). I have no doubt that Braklet will be an integral part of the Sweet FA going forward.

Coach's thoughts:

Well Round 15 rolls around and although we only beat the Royals by a solitary point the week previously, it still added onto a spree of wins that's had us sitting nicely as the pointy end of the season approaches. Big winning margins or not, things have been good in Dragon land and perhaps not coincidentally that whole enquiry thing regarding yours truly seemed to just fade away. Perhaps old Ace actually knows what he's doing, eh? Anyway, the league will realise my genius eventually.

This week, we faced the Swamprats. Winning form is good form, but would we keep it up against the Malk producers?

Round 15, Conditions for this match - RAINY

We ran out against the home team in... less than stellar conditions. Wet and miserable was the order of the day by the Qooty weather gods, but we've proven as a team we can turn it on rain, hail or shine.

The first term was a tale of two halves for the two sides as we leapt out of the gates with the first three goals during the first half of the term. Bonz was naturally the one to kick us off, followed by Strigoi and BringBackTheAnchor. The Swamprats then for the rest of the term managed to sneak ahead by kicking the next four goals, two of them by the Rats' Catsnlakers (who would prove a bit of a thorn in our side for this match, as you'll see further on).

The second term was all the Dragons, even though scoring was low. Muddy, slurry conditions meant clean grabs and accurate disposals were a little lacking, but we managed to kick 3.1 for the term, with two of them by the legendary veteran Ljp86 and the other kicked by Strigoi who snuck forward from the ruck (no, I had nothing to do with this one, she just ran her opponent off their legs and drifted forwards). In the whole term the Rats only managed the solitary behind late in proceedings, so we entered Half Time with a handy 13 point advantage.

The third term started off with us looking mighty with the first three goals, with Strigoi managing another two goals (making it hard even for me to find a reason to move her from the ruck) as well as DragoDelph kicking one from the midfield. This was all within the first 6 minutes, and we were looking ominous with a 31 point advantage. Then along came Catsnlakers for the Rats, kicking another two goals followed up by the veteran Kennedy Parker to reduce the margin back to 13 points, before Ashman OG and Bonz hit back late in the term to give us a 25 point lead at Three Quarter Time.

So as swell as things were looking, it's fair to say the last quarter actually proved, yet again, a bit of a heart stopper. The Swamprats (and more specifically, Catsnlakers) were certainly not done yet and came out of the break with the intensity turned up to 11. They got the first major through GotTheGoodes before the aforementioned Catsnlakers did his utmost to try sink us, with the Rats full forward kicking another three goals in a row to reduce the margin to just one point, in the space of ten minutes, bringing his tally up to a monstrous 7.1. The Rats managed yet another goal through Ant Bear, giving them a 7 point advantage at this stage, before we stopped the rot and slowed the game down, defending hard for a further 7 minutes with only a couple behinds kicked by us before finally we broke through around the 20 minute mark. Ashman OG managed a nice goal followed up by Blaze Storm, giving us the 7 point advantage. We were out on our feet at this point and seemed to be trying desperately to save the lead, which worked for about 4 minutes before the Swamprats managed a major, reducing the margin to just 1 point!

Once again though, we were able to just defend enough until the final siren blew, and once again ran out 1 point victors. Phew!

Defender highlights: Definitely not a game for highlights from the defenders, but the half back duo in Matt_352 (11d, 6m, 2t) and Stoods (14d, 3m) were both solid defensively while also giving drive from D50.

Midfield highlights: Strigoi (26d, 12ho, 4g) was absolutely outstanding in the ruck; while her direct opponent also got plenty of touches and one more hitout, Strigs hit the Rats where it hurt most: on the scoreboard with 4 very important majors, all the while supporting the mids. Ljp86 (23d, 6m, 2g, 1b) was also outstanding on the wing while Pie 4 Life (29d, 7m) was prolific albeit in a tough battle with his opposition, and DragoDelph (21d, 4m, 2t, 1g) was also really solid for us all round while giving his opponent a touch-up.

Forward highlights: It was a rough day, in terms of weather and for our forwards, with our midfield definitely supplied the bulk of the scoring, but Bonz (4d, 2g, 2b) got some healthy scoring shots in and Ashman OG (2d, 2g) enjoyed a move to the forward pocket and made his opportunities count.

Coming into the second last round of the regular season on a streak of wins would have any team feeling confident, but that said, the last couple of wins where we got over the line by just 1 point had me hoping that most of the Dragons fan base (and staff) have good heart health! Surely we were due a more relaxing win, should we get over the line for this week?

Well we were coming up against the Phoenix Fire Chooks, so let's dive in.

[Round 16], Conditions for this match - WARM

Things were a bit warmer on the day than last week's match, which I think everyone was thankful for.

The Phoenix got off to a strong start scoring 1.1 within the first 5 minutes whilst we were scoreless, before Hatchy1992 made his mark with a major. The Fire Chooks managed another 3 majors, getting up to a 20 point lead, until later in the quarter the one and only Bonz managed a couple of goals before Quarter Time, with the margin then sitting at 13 points.

Clearly gunning for a Subway voucher, Hatchy1992 burst out of the blocks to score a goal and a behind within the first few minutes of the restart, followed by Strigoi. We then led by a point before the Phoenix hit back yet again, kicking 4 goals in a row. Blaze Storm kicked one, whereupon the Chooks kicked yet another, whilst Pie 4 Life hit back for us before Half Time, rendering a 18 point lead to the Phoenix. Not ideal, but we were still within reach and we know we can score heavily in bursts when needed.

The third term was a seasawing affair; we managed the first 2 goals to reduce that pesky margin but the Phoenix did hit back through Itsmyshow (who had already kicked a mini bag for the Phoenix by this point). Chief was having none of that though, kicking a 6 pointer having moved forward, followed by Ljp86 kicking truly from a run down the wing. Itsmyshow once again bobbed up for the Phoenix (I could have considered moving serial_thrilla off of him, but I didn't like the way thrilla looked at me one time during training...so... yeah) before we kicked the next 3 goals before Three Quarter Time, thanks to Knifey Spoony, and once again the big Chief and Ljp86. We were back in business with a 9 point advantage our way at this point, so strapped outselves in for the final term.

Those wishing for a relaxing final term where we run away with it might be disappointed. Not quite the heart stopper, but close enough! The Phoenix did what they had to scoring the first goal of the term within a minute of play commencement, meanwhile we managed just the two behinds before paraaaa found the middle of the sticks. Ashman OG followed to get us out to 17 points in front before the Phoenix found another 2 goals to bring it back within a kick. T2B_ and Bonz each split the sticks to give us a breather before, guess who... Itsmyshow bobbed up to kick another 2 goals. Getting towards red time, the Phoenix were within 5 points of us. T2B_ (who seems to have polished up his goal kicking thankfully) kicked a goal on the run giving us a couple goals breathing room, before the Phoenix kicked yet another as the term closed in on the 20 minute mark.

For the next 5 minutes, it was a tussle up and down the ground with only the Phoenix (luckily) only scoring a behind. Out defense held firm and in the end, we ran out 5 point victors. Phew once again!

Defender highlights: HawkAussie (18d, 4m) was outstanding at half back, clearing the ball well while also nullifying his opponents. The same can be said of Stoods (15d, 7m). Matt_352 (16d, 2m) was also quite solid for us at CHB.

Midfield highlights: The midfield battle was interesting. The Phoenix arguably took the chocolates here, at least in the centre, but still once again Ljp86 (18d, 4m, 3t, 3g, 1b) showed his craft on the wing and kicked 3 very important goals. On the opposing wing, Bradesmaen (23d, 2m) got plenty of the ball although had a tough battle with his direct opponent. Finally Pie 4 Life (17d, 6t, 1g, 1b) may have technically given up the choccies to Chipmunk, but still did plenty of grunt work for us and hit the scoreboard.

Forward highlights: Bonz (6d, 4g, 1b) did his Fred chances no harm while Hatchy1992 (7d, 3m, 2g, 1b) was also very handy forward until he was shifted to defence (don't ask) where he was also very, very solid completely nullifying his opponent.

Did you know that there is an award at the Dragons called the Pie 4 Life Medal? It rewards the best clubman at Dragon Island: the person who goes above and beyond to support the club, even when not asked. The person who steps up when need. Previous winners include club luminaries such as Danoz, Determinant, Blaze Storm and Knifey Spoony, whilst the ever reliable A Swallow has won it in three separate seasons! Curiously the player whose name the award is named after won it last season…the moment he managed to weasel his way into the leadership group. Who says corruption is a thing of the past?

This season though, there can be no disputing the clearly worthy winner – as Dragons ruck Strigoi is named Best Clubman!

Her on-field work is first class, and with 1002 league hitouts she is ranked second in Dragons’ history – quickly closing the gap on record holder Hate too! But Strigs has been an ever-present part of Dragons match threads and the team PM for the past six seasons now, and her loyalty and friendship is beyond question. Everyone in the league knows Strigs, and everyone knows she is a Dragon.

So thank you Strigoi for being you, and congratulations on winning the Pie 4 Life Medal!​
