Correct there is 4 of them, however depending on where the play is at the time, 1 can be up to 100m away and the other about 50m away and you expect them to pluck out a throw.
Meanwhile the other 2 are trying to pick infringements in a group of up to a dozen players if its around a stoppage and while it's their job to look out for throws, they're also looking for a range of free kicks and in a pack situation, you can't always get a clear view.
FWIW I did spend a couple of seasons umpiring lower level local footy and we were instructed to give the free kicks that you see, not the ones you think may have happened because of crowd noise or players appealing. I'd be fairly confident in saying that umpires that are at AFL level are much better trained to only call those frees that they do and not guess when they think an infringement happened.
Yeah well you could have fooled me that they donāt guess some of the time.
