I think being dead last on the ladder has a bit to do with it as well

True. But personally I believe that when you aren't on the job, you don't get paidNah that’s not true. I took leave to help out my wife and was paid my normal wage. I’m a carpenter and we have a union. It’s probably true for people working in sectors without a decent union though.
I am not suggesting it was Ben or the club. I am commenting on the outcome. The club literally sat them down and gave them this option, with them acknowledging how god awful hubs were previously and that this could last the rest of the season. This isn't a case of Ben calling them up 30 minutes before the flight and saying he wasn't coming.
As a member I am allowed to have a problem with the club not having a problem with it.There would be a better reason than he just doesn't want too.
If the club and players don't have a problem than neither should anyone else.

Fair enough. No issue with you having the opinion or expressing it (and doubly so because you are being respectful), but I strongly disagree that there are some slippery slope shenanigans to come with player's skipping out on games for mundane reasons.True. The precedent here could lead to blokes saying I won't travel to the next away game because my wife has a flu, and she has kids to look after, or my grandmother has a birthday. I mean, in all seriousness, players haven't missed games in the past for family reasons other than child birth or very serious medical emergencies. Now we have these situations where it's ok to simply not travel because you could be away for up to 3 weeks and you have kids at home. I would imagine that half the team could find a very good reason why they would rather stay home. List of 42 may not be enough if blokes like Goldy and Ziebell et al would have adopted the same attitude. But given they are highly paid professionals, it's ok to question this in my opinion.
I realize not many agree with me, but this is my take on it.
I wouldn't quite question his shinboner spirit, but in general, it's a questionable call by himI agree with you 100%. He is in a privileged position to pull the blue & white jumper on each week, and be well paid to do so. Our supporter base have poured thousands of donations into the club over the past 2 years, because of their love for the club and will continue to do the same next year. His actions have made me question the value of his 'shinboner spirit'

I am questioning it, but it is what it is, it gives somebody else that wants to play an opportunity.
Each to their own. To me when you sign a 600k per year contract, you do the job wherever and whenever it's required. And do it well.

'They'll make lots of mistakes': Remainder of season a learning experience for young Hawks
With finals off the table, Hawthorn will back in its younger players in the last few games of the seasonwww.afl.com.au
Look I think some supporters give the players a free pass to take the piss at times but surely not right now with Ben?
We're currently in contention for absolutely nothing and arguably have more to lose than gain from putting all our energies into winning at all costs. On top of that if Ben has personal circumstances that need him in Melbourne and his back is creaking from carrying the midfield, don't think he's letting us down particularly.
For all we know the club might've gently nudged him to stay to focus on 2022.
Yep, well I imagine Ben has his reasons, and all that's fair enough, but just when I've been banging on about the club not tanking, the opportunity arises for us not to play our number one midfielder.
Hey presto! Voila! Pick #1 - coming right up!
Everyone seems to be happy - and I imagine, especially those on here who've been making the passionate case about giving Jason Horne the keys to Arden Street
Me? I'm just going to find the salt and pepper - when you've got to eat your own hat, a few condiments help it go down a bit easier
Not yet.Hey GR, I know they were doing one of these with the leaders as well. Has that come out and I've just missed or it's not been released yet?
